As a fish & chip shop connoisseur I've been eyeing Halibut House since their opening in Guelph. I'd had some Halibut & Chips with a Garden Salad delivered which was absolutely delicious and while I've many more items to try on their menu I thought it was time to give it a visit.
I decided I would see what their service during breakfast hours was like. Fortunately my experience was very positive. I was attended to by Taylor as my server who immediately greeted me then got me seated and situated with a drink as I browsed the menu, so far so good and a great start.
Though things looked quite busy she was very polite and attentive towards me and other customers. I felt at ease placing my order and not having a feeling or urgency to hurry up with my order or ask questions.
My food arrived promptly and was hot and freshly made. The kitchen staff seemed efficent and lively from what I observed and I very much enjoyed my meal.
I rarely would choose to eat in a diner/restaurant for breakfast but truly the atmosphere, clean environment and mixed natural and bright lighting from the windows is very refreshing. I'd come again as it's certainly welcoming to enjoy your meal with a partner, friend or bring your family.
The spot is spacious enough and doesn't feel cramped. The booths, chairs and tables are well placed. For quite a cosy location.
I recommend giving the menu a browse online and if these type of restaurants are your jam give then a try with an online order or absolutely make a visit in person. You just might of found your new favourite chippy.
I do plan to visit again...
Read moreI recently visited Halibut House in Guelph, and it was, without a doubt, the worst dining experience I’ve ever had. First, the food was absolutely disgusting. The fish was soggy, greasy, and had zero flavor. The batter was thick, mushy, and undercooked, and the fries were limp and cold, as if they'd been sitting around for hours. It’s like they tried to make a meal but forgot every essential ingredient for taste or texture.
As for the management, it was equally terrible. The staff seemed completely disinterested and overwhelmed, and the manager appeared completely uninvolved, standing around without a care in the world while the chaos unfolded. When I complained about the food, I was met with indifference—no apologies, no offer to fix the situation. Just an attitude like they couldn’t care less if I ever came back.
If you're looking for good fish and chips in Guelph, do yourself a favor and head across the street to Golden Fish and Chips. The difference is night and day. The food is fresh, crispy, and flavorful, with friendly service that actually makes you feel welcome. I will never waste my time or money at Halibut House again. Golden Fish and Chips is the...
Read moreWhat a disappointment: On our first visit within their opening month we were so pleased with everything . . . . great fish, greater value on their 'specials' days . . . and so on. On this, our visit in September, we were looking forward to the same. Sadly no one in our small group had that same feeling.
No question the haddock and chips price was still good, but the fish seemed some measurable grams lighter even in the same lovely batter. But the BIG disappointment was the chips. When the plates arrived my companion asked me if mine also looked as though they had been sitting for too, too long. And yes they did. Tasted like it too. Not good at all. We thought our server might be back to ask how things were so we could tell her. But there was no follow-up at our table.
Nothing worse than poor chips and this just wan't our opinion, so yes this was nothing like our first experience. When the server brought our bill we told her what we thought and that solicited an "Oh Dear" and the hope that next time it would be...
