Very confused. Seriously, very confused. I swear to god I'm not making this up. A few weeks ago, I ordered a donair pizza from Xtreme Pizza nextdoor to Jean's. They delivered me a donair pizza and forgot the donair sauce. The driest pizza ever. Was thoroughly disappointed Just now, I ordered a sweet and sour chicken from Jean's... and they forget the sauce on the chicken! What is going on? Am I in the twilight zone? Is there a quantum sauce vacuum around this area of town? Why can these businesses not provide the requisite sauces? Look, I can see if it were a random sauce on the side specially ordered. But donair sauce COMES with donair pizza. It just. does. You order a donair pizza, and the sauce is supposed to be in little cups inside the box. Everyone knows this. Now I can maybe see a restaurant forgetting to put the sauce in the box like in the pizza situation. But how on Earth do you forget to put the sauce on an order like this? The order literally comes swimming in sweet and sour sauce by DEFAULT. That's like forgetting to put the tires on the car before you sent it out of the factory. It doesn't even make sense.

the staff were very kind and quick but the food was not great. enormous portions, ate my fill and the container still looked full but taste-wise it’s unfortunately a miss. lots of batter on the ginger beef which isn’t needed with the already large portion. the batter made me feel a little sick after a bit so i switched over to the rice. can’t go wrong with staple chicken fried rice! the sauce for the ginger beef was marked as hot so i thought it’d have more kick but the sugar almost put me out before i felt a hint of spice so it’d be good to ask for it extra spicy if that’s how you like it since i’m not even big on spice myself. very very sweet though. the egg roll had a puréed meat filling i think? i’m not sure since i haven’t had that kind of egg roll before but it isn’t my favourite. was pretty bland sadly i’m disappointed but you can give it a go if you’re open to it

Conveniently located at the edge of Spring Garden Road, Jean’s is a classic fusion of Asian and Western cuisine that we’ve come to expect over the last couple of decades in North America. The restaurant was meticulously clean and the decor and atmosphere were quite welcoming. While language barriers may stop you, the Chinese menu definitely hides most of what the restaurant has to offer. We were a big group so we were able to order quite a variety of dishes. Unfortunately, the food was quite lacklustre. It lacked much flavour, some of the meat was undercooked, and the spice was extremely watered down perhaps to appeal to Western palates (which is fair). However, the owner was extremely kind and this was one of the best service I had the pleasure of experiencing in Halifax recently. Her kindness alone would be worth another visit!

Where to begin? I guess with the worst, the fried "wontons". I put wontons in quotes as wontons, by definition, have a blob or meat or other filling inside their fried wrapper. Jean's doesn't understand this. Their "wontons" were just fried chips of egg roll batter with no dumpling filling to speak of. Just dry, half stale, scummily greasy pieces of egg roll wrapper. Never have I seen a place try to pass off chips as wontons. It was astounding. The "wontons" wouldn't be that bad if they weren't fried in the same mystery oil as everything else in the restaurant. This shared oil imbues everything it touches with a slight but very noticable taste of fish and chicken fat rendering anything that has been placed in it a off-putting, eerily mysterious flavour area. The fried chicken balls were questionable at best and physically revolting at worst. The coating was the same bland, slightly fishy oil and batter combo seen in the "wontons" and the chicken seems to be composed of several malfitting chunks of chicken giving a single chicken ball multiple textures of meat as it's being bitten through this giving the whole experience an anxiety inducing uneasy of never knowing what may be bitten into. The egg roll was your average mince meat paste in a wrapper but, like everything else fried, contained a fishy taste and a strange oil that leaves a slick scum on the inside of the mouth. The chicken fried rice was surprisingly good but I'm not sure if that's just because it's night impossible to get chicken fried rice wrong or if everything else in the meal was of such low quality that it just seemed like a shining beacon of flavour at the end of the arduous journey that was the trek through the rest of the meal. Would not, and will not,...

Pros: Price isnt too bad, ($20 for a decent amount of food), large serving sizes. girl who answered the phone could speak english! very impressed, Cons: food took 1.5 hrs to arrive a few blocks down the road, i called jeans 40 mins in to ask if he was on the way, they said he left 10 minutes before that. food was cold upon arrival, and when the chinese guy got here who delivered it (who could barley speak english) i paid, and his responce was 'you have cash?' i replyed with 'no..' and then he said 'you no going to tip?' i told him that because it took so long and was cold, he wasent getting a tip. 'seriously? not fair man'

i'm all one for tipping the people that deliver food, but when you're in university and don't have much money, and then when you get the food that you can barely afford and it's cold because of the driver... that's not cool with me.

all in all, i might order from them again. but if it takes as long as it did the 2nd time, it will be the last.

UPDATE

have had jeans now 5 times. i've picked it up every other time and have enjoyed it.. placing it in my hot bag to keep it hot until i got home.

last night's delivery though (Since we moved to dartmouth, i'd rather pay the $2 delivery fee, since i'd be spending way more then that in gas and bridge fair...) was horrid... the food was cold (i asked about them using hotbags, their answer was 'no,sorry, we dont' why not?!)

it also POISONED all 4 of us that ate it.. ew. all in all, this will be the last time i will ever...

March 8, 2025. Hubby and I just left Jeans Chinese in the old Kim Fengs location in Woodside. We had placed our order and while waiting for it to come out, we sat at a table. The table was situated right beside the see through glass doors leading to the kitchen. Hubby and I AND another gentleman who was also waiting for his food sat there and watched the cook bare handed placing chicken balls on the take out dishes.

Then he decided there wasn't enough room on one of the dishes, so he wiped his hands on his pants and proceeded to move the chicken balls from one dish to another with his bare hands. It didn't stop there. We continued to watch and all three of us saw the cook drop a chicken ball on the floor, pick it up, look at it and place it back in the take out dish with the rest of the order he was working on, and then wipe his hand again on his pants!

I know this restaurant is a well loved restaurant (they were in Halifax). We've never eaten there when they were in Halifax. I know they have won awards, but after tonight's performance, their quality has obviously gone way down. We got a refund and left. The older gentleman in the kitchen was screaming and denying everything (the guy who took our order had to go tell him why we wanted a refund on our own order that we didn't even receive yet)!

Three of us witnessed this!!!! We...
