Came here for lunch on a drizzly Tuesday in January with two coworkers and were seated right away at a table by the window. The overall layout is the same as it was when La Cucina was here prior, but obviously now with some nice Mexican decor. Large mural on the exterior is a nice touch. I'd say seating capacity for 50 or 60, including a few chairs at the bar. Friendly, attentive service. Free homemade chips & salsa brought to the table to tide you over. For the meal, I tried the Lunch Mexican Flag ("choice of two chicken vera cruz, braised pork, or cheese & onion enchiladas finished with jack cheese, enchilada sauce, jalapeno crema, avocado crema, topped with green onion, served with rice & beans" $14). It was a satisfying portion and not bad. It doesn't have the homemade feel to it, but overall was decent. One coworker had the Lunch Burrito Bowl ("rice, beans, shredded cabbage, sweet pickled onion, jack cheese, charred corn, guacamole fresco, pico de gallo, jalapeno crema, warm seasoned house chips with choice of protein" $15). She got the vegetarian chili as the protein and was happy with the dish and its size. The other coworker got the Chili Con Carne ("ground sirloin, tomatoes, corn, green pepper, kidney beans, onion, jack cheese, topped with sour cream & green onion, served with house chips" $14). When it arrived, it was presented with all the chips in a circle around the plate, mostly covering the chili, so at first glance looked like there was hardly any chili at all. But underneath there was more and it was a good lunch size. He could've eaten twice that, but this would be a healthier portion for sure. Didn't notice any kidney beans, but found the flavor overall to be good and a nice warming meal on a damp winter day. I'd definitely go back and try other things, including some of the...
Read moreI got my start in the restaurant industry working at Mexicali Rosas some 25 years ago in Oakville, ON. This was my first time at a Mexi's in over 20 years and it was fantastic. I was really craving a Chimichanga as I had just watched the new Deadpool film, but unfortunately for me they now have mushrooms in them, and I'm a little finicky when it comes to mushrooms, but hey, that's on me. I asked the fella that greeted me if they could do an order without, but he politely said no, which I understood as I know that they get prepped before opening. Anyway, had to zip over to Costco to do some stuff, and could have gone with a $1.50 hot dog and pop, but said "nah, I want something wicked good", and headed back to Mexi's. Same fella recognized me and welcomed me back, got a nice comfy booth, and ordered an ice cold Sol (WAY better than Corona BTW). Loved that you still do the comp chips and salsa, chips were seasoned nice and even, salsa was fresh didn't have too much cilantro, which can overpower. Ordered the Clyde but got it with the Arroz sauce over the red sauce. Everything tasted the way I remembered it from over two decades ago, right down to the shredded beef and the beans. Sorry I didn't get the name of the guy that both greeted and served me, but he was super-friendly and accommodating. I was there around 4-5. I live in Bridgewater and come up every 2 weeks or so, would I be able to pre-order the Chimichanga entree without the mushrooms in advance? Along with the tamales & chili relleno, the chimis were my...
Read moreThe last two times we've eaten here it's not been good. We ate there just before they moved out of their downtown Halifax location. I ordered the vegetarian chilli which had been great on several previous occasions but this time it was more like bean soup with almost no resemblance to what I'd had before. When I complained to the waiter he didn't even question what was wrong with it and just gave us a refund. We then ordered in on NYE (due to covid) and the food took almost 2 hours to arrive. It was stone cold. This was not due to the courier. Once they'd collected it from the restaurant it was only 5 - 10 minutes for delivery. They'll still try to blame the courier but here's the thing - if you make food and it isn't picked up right away, call the courier and then MAKE FRESH FOOD! Don't just sit it under a heat lamp while you sit on your hands waiting for the courier. Also, I'd ordered the taco salad topped with chilli which is supposed to come in a hard tortilla bowl but it was just in a cardboard bowl with what looked like 2 or 3 tortilla chips crushed up and sprinkled on top. If this is because it's difficult to make it this way for delivery then don't advertise it as such and change the picture to show what you will actually be receiving. Very disappointing because I really liked this place. Sadly it seems that whatever magic it had...
