Definitely, not what it used to be. Was told it was run by the same guy that ran the place beside the old strip joint years ago, for which I have been going there and now here for a total of 20 years...yes 20 years! I heard they were partners, but the better cook/chef went to LuLu's. I guess with anything that ages, it has declined and shrunk. As I write this, my family and ! just finished eating the 4 orders of chicken & rice we ordered via delivery, total $45 ($10 extra - $5 tax + $5 delivery).
When I received the 4 orders, they felt light, so the disappointment was already growing. So as we opened them, sure enough, the normal chicken & rice order that comes in the rectangular containers was only about 75% full of it's old self, they use to almost overflow, no joke. I specially asked for "lots and lots" of the white sauce (I have used the word "extra" before and got barely any) so I tried "lots" and still got barely anything. They used to even pack 2 or 3 extra white sauces in those little plastic containers they use for garlic sauce for pizza, now even after requesting it, they're stingy on a $45 order? The chicken isn't what it use to be either, you can tell the marinade or lack there of, didn't have long enough to sit, the flavor wasn't there. The chicken used to be crispy from the grill on the outside and tender on the inside, was perfect, now it lacks any texture, just boring. They even used to marinade the onions in the hot sauce, I guess another step they decided to skip.
Bottom line, everything was acceptable, nothing more. The food was very bland (never needed salt & pepper before) compared to how it use to be or should I say, should be! I hope the staff read this. Your strategy to cut corners (less food, less sauces, less prep time) has maybe saved you some time and money, but ultimately cost you a long term...
Read moreSo my fiance and I have been looking all over Hamilton for good Shawarma and we went to luluâs today. We got two falafel pitas, and we were so disappointed. The âwrapâ was un-edible from the beginning because it was drenched in âgarlicâ sauce and ripped in half in a poorly wrapped tinfoil. Contents fell all over me while eating so I lost half of it, waste of money. My fiance opened his wrap and there was a pile of grease sitting at the bottom of his pita from the deep fried frozen falafels. They do not use chicken off a spick, while I was there I noticed how unauthentic this âshawaramaâ was when I witnessed them pour 4 bags of raw chicken on a flat top. Half of it was cooked on the bottom the other half on top was raw because there was literally too much chicken on the flat top. My stomach and fianceâs has been killing us since we ate just some of our wraps, and will not be coming back unfortunately. For 14.50$ for two falafel wraps not worth it, not the place to go if you want the real shawarma experience. One thing I will give is there was one cook and he was very busy, but other than that the execution and authenticity and taste etc etc was very...
Read moreI lived in Ottawa for 6 years and ate shwarma almost daily at times. It's like pizza there - and the best shwarma I've had has been in Ottawa.
Lulu's was not at all what I expected. For one, the chicken is not rotisserie- it's grilled. For me the burnt fat on an open flame, freshly carved off a rack is a huge part of the flavour and appeal. So, I immediately found it odd that they were grilling the chicken.
Secondly, I was getting it to go so I expected to be able to walk with it and eat. But they loaded so much chicken and sauce into it that it was literally overflowing - everywhere. I had to stop and eat by a garbage can to avoid it dripping all over my work clothes. The fact they give you a fork with it is a clue.
Did it taste good? Kind of. Was it a shwarma? Not like any I've ever had. It was sloppy and soggy and impossible to eat while moving, and combined with it being grilled on a griddle rather than rotisserie, it amounted to a huge fail in my opinion. I'm obviously in the minority here. If you like your shwarma to be a dripping gooey mess, this...
