It's been awhile since I've been here. Last time I think they were still Good Catch Boil House!
Walking in the first thing I noticed is the right side of the resto now has traditional HK cafe decor and booth seating now. The left side of the resto still retains its boil house/bar decor and vibe.
I rmbr there being a lot of TVs the last time I came but I think they may have added even more since then! LOL It makes sense though because I can imagine tons of ppl coming in the evenings to enjoy sports and bar food.
Ok jumping straight to food.
They have a traditional HK cafe style menu, kept the boil house menu that is fusion-y w/ shareables and then a menu with seasonal specials.
We ordered a baked curry beef brisket rice off the HK cafe menu (was supposed to come w/ double cheese on top but gf is lactose intolerant so we removed that lol), a seafood pasta which was listed under "Shareables" and washed it down w/ HK milk tea which came w/ the rice.
The curry beef brisket rice surprised me. It had a SOLID amount of meat (not too many potatoes and not too many veggies) and enough curry sauce. One of the gripes I have with so many HK cafes is they skimp you on the curry sauce so you're often left eating bare rice.
The HK milk tea was a sleeper hit. I'm not saying it's like Marathon Cafe level milk tea but honestly it was kinda hitting up there like a heavyweight LOL. We also saw everyone around us drinking it too instead of the lemon tea so the regulars must know something.
The seafood pasta was where most of our frustration lies. It was indeed a shareable portion. Very large dish, lots of seafood, pasta cooked al dente. However, it was ... wait for it ... bland! My gf and I couldn't believe how bland it was. Imagine eating spaghetti straight out of the pot of boiling water. It REALLY could've used salt, pepper, garlic ... SOMETHING. If you're reading this review, plz do yourself a favour and skip the seafood pasta.
I would return in the future. The seafood offerings all appear to remain...
Read moreHonestly, great food. The service was good. But this is all from a sit-down meal that we had in the summer.
Today, we placed an order online, but when we arrived, the order somehow did not go through their system. So, we ordered to take-out, and were told 15 minutes (we only had 3 items). After 32 minutes, we were given our order...or so we thought. Thank goodness we checked the bag because it ended up being the wrong order. We took it back, and then were told that our order wasn't even put in because it was "missed" (we didn't understand what that meant because how could you miss an order that we place RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU). So, what should have been a simple 5 minute pick-up turned into an hour wait for our food. All we got was a $10 discount. Any decent and respectable place would have comped the entire meal for messing this up so badly.
I would definitely recommend Good Catch, but only if you decide to eat-in. Otherwise, order online at your own peril because you could end up wasting an hour waiting, with barely any compensation for your wasted time.
Addendum: I just checked my credit card statement today, and saw that I WAS CHARGED TWICE for the original order that "didn't go through". I'm changing my review to 1-star now. This is just a gong-show travesty that their ordering system is such a disaster.
Additional addendum: we called 5 days ago to resolve our double-charge and were told it would be taken up with the manager and we should expect a refund in 2 days. We noticed that we weren't refunded by today, and called again. Apparently, our first attempt at resolving this issue wasn't even attended to, and the manager said that they were going to look into it NOW. I decided to just dispute it with my bank because it seems like the restaurant is either: A) too busy to attend to customer disputes, or B) they were just hoping we'd forget about the issue and they could pocket the extra charge. I don't know what kind of take-out operation they are trying to run, but it...
Read moreFirst time at Good Catch Cafe. We were there for our late lunch. It was kinda busy because only few tables were available for patio dining. We waited about 15-20mins to be seated. The server was very friendly and helpful. She cleaned the table really well after each customer. The quality of the food was not bad. Nice presentation and the portion was reasonable. Most of the items we ordered was good except for the tomato paste pork chop rice. It needs some improvement on the sauce. It was a bit too sour. Will give it a second chance! It’s a good choice if you want to go for Hong Kong Style cafe food.
Finally, we get a chance to visit Good Catch Bar & Cafe after they resume dine in service with seating indoor. It’s was our first time to be seated inside the restaurant. Parking there was easy so it was a bonus. The restaurant was very spacious with high ceilings. In fact, they divided the restaurant into two different parts. One side with Good Catch Bar and the other side with Hong Kong Cafe theme. It was a very good venue to hang out with friends. The food was ok and the portion was fair. The price was not cheap for Hong Kong style cafe food but the service was excellent. Will go again to try other items on their menu.
Whenever we crave for HK style cafe food, this is always a good place to go. The food was made by order, that’s why it tasted fresh and hot when delivered to us. The servers were very helpful and made us felt welcomed.
Take Out Experience: We stopped by for some take outs on a Tuesday evening. The restaurant was packed and very busy but the service for take out was great. We got our order quickly and they tasted really good too.
Recent Visit: We came here to dine in after our movie next door at the Cineplex Cinemas Markham & VIP. I think this location was a great stop after watching a movie. It was full of people but the queue moved quite fast. The food came quickly and the service was ok considered it...
