Outstanding meal at Ancila's Indian Cuisine in Mississauga. We called in our order before heading over there as this was the recommendation of others from online reviews. Like our regular go-to Taste of Punjab (in Brampton), food is made fresh, so you'll have to wait. The major difference is this operation is run by only ONE woman (and one young man who helped serve) - Ancila. Her website shows an old menu from which we made our order for the evening - Fish Masala (extremely light and delicate), Chicken Korma (a bit smokey with plenty of cardamom pop) and Chicken Vindaloo (lots of heat and "drive" from the vinegar!). Online reviews will tell you she no longer has a menu, which when you arrive, will discover is true. She sat down and chatted with us for about 10 minutes after our meal, telling us how she got rid of the menus because she wanted to give her customers a true Indian home food experience, and that the menu got in the way of that. Normally - if you don't have specific requests - you tell her what you're feeling like, by way of specific proteins, spice levels, level of sauciness, etc., and she will whip something up for you like you'd find at an auntie's home in India. She could prepare, for example, gobi (cauliflower) at least 7 different ways, depending on how you felt. She also prepares meals and dishes depending on the weather and season (hot/cold) and if people are sick (kind of like Chinese people eating congee when sick!). She told us during our post-meal chat that for her, as an Indian cook, what we ordered was far from the norm and that we ordered WAY too much - way too much food, way too much curry and way too much meat. Next time, she said - since she knows us now - she'd make us a curry, a vegetable, and maybe some daal of some kind....something simple. That being said, when the food came, she advised us the order in which to eat based on intensity of the curry (and since when has any Indian cook come out to tell you THAT?). From the abomination of a meal that we had tonight, I CANNOT WAIT to go back. HIGHLY...
Read moreAmazing food! One of the best places i've been too and I've lived around the corner my entire life. A hidden Gem.
Ordered over the phone for pick up and the lady who I spoke with was super sweet. She made ordering easy and answered all of my questions about # of dishes to order. We said we loved spicy food and she said 2 of our dishes weren't traditionally spicy but she would see what she could do when she made them! Pick up was quick and easy - the food was done exactly when we asked for, we arrived 4 minutes early and she told us it would be ready at exactly 6pm - which was nice because we knew our food was as fresh as possible! Seems to be a small family owned business - the same lady who took our phone order seemed to have made the food and brought it out to us. Amazing quality - great taste - portion sizes were perfect - and the spice level on everything was perfect for us. One of the best experiences for Take-Out that i've had since Covid started.
Highly recommend. We ordered: Beef Vindaloo - great rich tomato base flavour and a nice delayed lingering spice that wasn't over whelming and really tender beef. Chicken Korma - really warm flavour with perfectly cooked chicken that was moist - added spice was noticeable but not too much and was a great pair with the spicier vindaloo. Dal Makhani - great alternative to my usual go-to yellow dal tadka. Vegetarian but still hearty with a thicker / creamier consistency and great flavour. All around a great experience from Ordering via phone - to pick up & pay - to getting it home and...
Read moreI found Ancila's Indian Cuisine through a Google search. I was looking for an Indian restaurant that was open for sit down service near the hotel my friend was staying at, and it was the first one I found. I called and made a reservation for the patio, and hoped for the best. When I got there, there was one table set up on the patio. I was a little worried, but okay, I'm game. My friend and I were seated and Ancila came out to explain the ordering process. There's no menu, but you get a choice of different proteins and she suggested sides. She asked what spice level we were good with. I am good with a pretty good spice level, but people define spicy differently, so we went with 4-6 out of 10. And then we sat back to wait. MY GOD. Starting with pakora which was delicious, it just kept getting better and better. Saffron rice, paneer, beef and chicken curries in amazing sauces with a lovely heat. I could have taken a bit more heat, but they gauged it well. I am hoping they weren't giggling at our Canadian palates. :) Butter naan and garlic naan rounded the meal out. I couldn't have asked for a better meal. Service was amazing. I felt like we were guests at their home table and they just wanted to please us. I would go again and again. It's a little tiny bit dingy, but go for the food. Go. They deserve every one of...
