Dera Biryani has undoubtedly raised the bar for biryani enthusiasts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Their biryani is absolutely immaculate, offering a rich and authentic experience that sets them apart from the competition.
The Veal Biryani is the undisputed star of the menu. The rice is perfectly cooked, each grain distinct and infused with just the right balance of spices. The veal meat is of exceptional quality, with tender, flavorful pieces that are cooked to perfection. The addition of the aloo (potatoes) is a delightful touch, enhancing the dish with its texture and flavor. One serving is generous enough to easily satisfy two people, making it not just a culinary treat but also great value for money.
What truly makes Dera Biryani a standout is their originality in preparation. Their Chicken Biryani and Veal Biryani are crafted with distinct recipes, resulting in two unique flavor profiles. This thoughtful approach offers a refreshing departure from the usual practice of simply switching meats while keeping the same spice mix. For those seeking variety and authenticity, this detail makes Dera Biryani an easy competitor for the title of the best biryani in the GTA.
While the biryani itself is worth every bit of praise, there are areas where Dera Biryani could improve. The dining experience leaves much to be desired—it’s a modest setup with a clear focus on takeout. Investing in their dine-in space could elevate them into a go-to destination for biryani lovers. Additionally, their operational timings are somewhat restrictive, which might inconvenience some customers. That said, these factors don’t detract from the excellence of their food, and the biryani alone is worth the effort of pre-ordering.
In summary, while the chicken biryani is commendable, it’s the veal biryani that truly steals the show. If you’re in search of a biryani experience that’s rich, authentic, and unparalleled in quality, Dera Biryani is a must-try. They may have room for growth in ambiance and convenience, but they deliver exactly where it counts—the...
Read moreThis is the second time I have ordered biryani from them. I am giving them 5 star review purely based on taste. The veal biryani is very delicious! It is quite spicy but the taste is very good. The chicken biryani is good too but the veal has much more flavour. Both times I ordered the small tray which in my opinion had sufficient amount of meat. Obviously they are a business and if you just want to eat meat maybe order BBQ or a curry from somewhere else. This is the only biryani that we ate from a restaurant where you can both see and taste the masala. Usually most biryanis from stores are just rice and layered meat and taste very dry. This veal biryani doesn’t have a dry taste. It is quite spicy like I said and I do wish they had a milder version available.
The service on the other hand is not the best. The first time I ordered I could barely hear the girl on the phone and understand her. The second time I called 2 different phone numbers and no one answered. I went to the restaurant and just placed my order there. It was surprising that they didn’t answer the phone when it appeared like they weren’t busy. The girl asked me if I preordered and I told her I tried calling but no one is answering. She took my order and my biryani was ready within 10 minutes. If you only do preorders, please make sure you have someone available who can answer and take orders.
The restaurant itself is cute and looks clean however I only ever did take out so I can’t speak much on the dining experience at the restaurant.
Also it would be nice and unique if you could offer fish biryani, or a vegetable/lentil...
Read moreStaff was pleasant (but seems like a family instead of trained staff). Location is nice and clean (I appreciated the wall art). Biryani was great, but I don’t get what all the fuss is about - it’s not amazing, it’s just like a really good one.
What I really appreciated was that the chicken in the biryani was not grey or dry/weird tasting. It was noticeably very fresh. I’ve noticed some places are starting to use poor quality (not expired but at the border) quality meats but that wasn’t the case with Dera. For this I say THANK YOU for using quality ingredients, many restaurants don’t do that anymore.
Portion size was decent. Prices a bit on the higher side but willing to pay for quality. Chicken quantity in the biryani was average but any less would have been disappointing.
So will I go back? Yes 100%, primarily because of freshness of food.
Recommendations for management? 1 - More menu items please. Maybe some Seekh kabab or shami kebab add ons, or boiled egg add ons, or a Sindhi biryani, or a goat biryani, or being able to add a bbq leg piece? 2 - Get rid of the silly reservation system. If you must keep it please add an option like Uber pick up. 3- Instead of using some man’s private cell phone for your number on google maps, please get a proper business phone line and please attend it. (And please set a proper voicemail) 4- can we please have some aloo/potato in the biryani? It’s sooo good. Lol. 4 - Keep the food fresh ! This is your differentiator!!
Overall thank you for the great experience. Looking forward to you guys...
