UPDATE: I returned 4 weeks later and what a difference. The restaurant was pretty dead. It was just 3 of us and two other tables on a Friday @6pm. This time we ordered the Soft Shelled Crab ($13.50), Agedashi Tofu ($4.50) and the Premium Platter E ($79). Both the crab and tofu were fine although I preferred the crab when used in the Queen of Crab maki. I wasn’t 100% satisfied with Platter. The scallops in the Scallapeno Maki were kind of flavorless and the potato chips on the King Tiger Maki overpowered its flavour. The sushi, sashimi and Futomaki were good though.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: My sister and I decided to check this place out as I had seen it on one of my social media feeds. It’s tucked away in a strip plaza but you wouldn’t see it from the road. It’s feels kind of like your little secret. We were surprised by how small the place was. As soon as we entered a friendly server directed us to a large menu board. I asked for his recommendations and he directed us to a few things. Everything looked good.
We decided on ordering the Pemium B ($32) and Premium C ($32) platters since we wanted both sushi and sashimi. Each came with 5 rolls and 8 assorted sushi and sashimi pieces. We ordered at the counter and then sat ourselves down. Every staff member were extremely friendly and accommodating. We had forgotten to order tea and as the cashier already placed the order through she gave us tea for free. They constantly checked on us and warned us that it might take a little longer as they got quite busy. I’m glad we came before 6pm as the place got really busy after we came and it was only a Tuesday. We watched the chef and he was going non-stop and running around.
The platters came with miso soup which was incredibly satisfying. It was a good sign as to what was to come. The selection of sushi and sashimi is limited but what you get is really fresh and of great quality. The highlight of the Maki had to be ‘The Queen of Crab’ which contained fried soft shell crab. Yum!
The owner stopped by to chat a little which was a really nice touch and made our experience that much more memorable. He told us they had only been open for 3 weeks and that he also owned the ramen place around the corner, Kamen. I really don’t have any complaints except my sister and I were craving a Sapporo beer! (they don’t serve alcohol) but it was...
Read moreKaze is a sister chain of Kamen Ramen. It's around 3-5 minute drive from Square One mall, a 2-3 min walk from Kamen, and it's located behind Kamen. We found Kaze through a free roll offer being advertised at Kamen. Since Kamen’s wait list was long, we decided to try Kaze, and we didn't regret it.
Kaze’s atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It’s a dine-in restaurant with high chair seating. They asked us to wait and sit for the free roll, and offered us water. The server welcomed us with a smile and attended to us very quickly, ensured that we had what we needed. We ended up ordering trays and a couple of rolls, in which they offered miso soups on the house to warm us up. There’s also complimentary tea they offered to all the guests, which was a plus since it was pretty cold outside. They ensured that we understood all the ingredients in the dishes.
For the Kamen Ramen offer, you are offered one of three (iirc) basic rolls like Spicy Salmon Roll, California Roll, etc. We picked the Spicy Salmon because I seem to like that one best anyway. It was so delicious that we ended up ordering another roll. The rest of the rolls and trays were also delicious, nicely garnished with green onions and these decorative little white balls. The portions were standard but the taste was great and the designs and style were innovative. We also went with the chef’s choice rolls which were also interesting.
A fun little info: if you also want to have ramen as well as sushi, you’re able to order anything from the Kamen menu to be brought to Kaze. That’s something we would’ve liked to know before ordering anything because we would absolutely love to have ramen with our sushi! So if they’re running out of space at Kamen, Kaze would be a good alternative spot. It's so close to our home so we might make this our go to spot and will be coming...
Read moreMy friend and I passed by here on a Saturday around 5pm. It was our first time here and did not know what to expect, we thought it would be a restaurant where a server would come to your table to take your order. When you walk in to the restaurant, it’s pretty small. There’s approximately three tables and two areas that provide bar like seating. You have to order first and go find your seat. I don’t know how well this is gonna work if there’s a huge rush. The menu is on the wall located on the right side when you walk in. They also provide regular sized menus that you can look at. When we were waiting in line, one of the workers went through the line taking orders and we would pay once we got to the cashier, I thought it was pretty efficient. There’s a good amount of different options and unique rolls on the menu. Once you find a place to sit, one of the employees will come and hand you your plate, napkin, chopsticks and soy sauce dish. The miso soup was provided in a styrofoam bowl, the soup was very good but I wish they would use reusable dishes for those who decide to dine in to reduce waste. My friend ordered the salmon and Cali daily special and I ordered the tunapeño and yam avocado roll. Presentation was beautiful and the rolls were fantastic. The tunapeño was bursting with flavour and the chips on top added a really nice crunch. Water is provided in a water dispenser located at the front, which I don’t mind because it allows me to get water whenever I need. The restaurant is very clean and the workers are all very nice. My friend and I had a really good time and we can’t wait to come back. I just hope they reduce the use of single use items for those who...
