Our party of 6 went on a Sunday evening of a long weekend (Monday being a holiday). There was no wait when we arrived around 7 pm, but when we left, there was a line-up. Customers were 98% Asian. Sugar Marmalade serves mainly desserts but they also have savoury choices. The Taiwanese Style Honey Sausages (AP4) ($8.99) tasted like a sweet version of BBQ pork and it came cut up in bite sized pieces. The Mango Roll Supreme (FD1) ($5.99) was enrobed in a wrapper that had a thick jello-like texture, as opposed to a pastry or crepe texture. It had mango cubes inside and out, and lots of fake whipped cream. The fake whipped cream is tasteless, so that every dessert on the menu that has whipped cream is pretty much tasteless. Even Cool Whip has a much better flavour than whatever they use at Sugar Marmalade. The Pancake Platter with Sunday Supreme (FD7) ($11.49) was 3 squares, each wrapped with a crepe-like wrapper, filled with the tasteless whipped cream. One square had durian fruit (awful!), one square had mango pieces (tasted okay) and the last square had one slice of strawberry and one chunk of banana among all the fake whipped cream. The taste of the durian permeated the whole. Everyone at my table kept getting whiffs of a smell like natural gas, and it turned out to be the durian in my dessert. The three squares were topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which was the only good thing about that dessert. The Strawberry Banana Mille Feuille (MF4) ($10.99) did not look anything like the photo in the menu. The pastry was tough and not flaky in the least, but my 17 year old daughter did enjoy it. I thought the portion was small for the price. The House Special Black Grass Jelly Mixed (BG1) ($6.99) had interesting clear bubbles that popped when bitten, releasing a sweet juice into the mouth. It was a refreshing choice. The Strawberry Taiwanese Shaved Ice (TS2) ($8.99) was surprisingly creamy and had a fake strawberry flavour. It was presented on an attractive wooden tray and came with a cute little bottle of what I'm guessing is coconut milk to pour over top. It would be a good option for sharing on a date. Everything that I tasted had an odd, artificial flavour to it, or, in the case of the whipped cream, no taste at all. I much prefer Demetre's. I would not return to Sugar Marmalade. Service was pleasant. Points for the Vicinity loyalty program are offered: one point per...
Read moreTL;DR: Not nearly as good as downtown locations. Wait staff is rude, food is subpar at best and service is painfully slow. They have a clicker system at the tables. I've seen this done so well at other places but here its an excuse for wait staff to not visit tables. We wrote our order down and clicked the button however no one came to our table. After 10 minutes of waiting and clicking, we went to a waitress and gave it to her directly. She informed us that the clicker was broken. Shouldn't she have mentioned this when we were seated or at least come to the table directly to tale our order? We ordered kimchi fries, lobster balls, a lychee special drink and a green tea parfait. Wait time for food was horrible. We waited almost 45 minutes. Thats unacceptable considering that they're cooking snacks. It waa busy that day so we let it go. Portions are big enough for sharing however they dont provide additional plates at the table so you dig into the serving plate. Additionally we weren't given water for the table. When food came to to table we asked the waitress for water and after 5 minutes of waiting we saw her serving other customers. Tried to get her attention again and she out right ignored us. As far as food is concerned, its not that great. Kimchi fries were so-so. The lobster balls were not lobster. They were a shrimp and imitation crab mix. You can tell because of the texture, taste and smell. Lychee drink was meh and the portions were sooooo small. The waitress said they didn't have mason jars so they're serving in plastic cups. What kind of restaurant doesn't have glassware? Save your money and go down the street and get chatime. So it was almost an hour since we placed our order and the green tea parfait had not even been made. When we asked the waitress why it was taking ao long, she said that our order would being made...
Read moreIf I could give this a 0, I would. Service (our waitress had long pink hair and black roots, she claimed her name was 'Cheryl'. Still not sure if that is her real name, so I'm going to just describe her) was terrible. We came in at around 11:10pm on May 14, 2017. We wrote down our order and gave it to one of the servers. After 40 minutes we had to ask one of the servers where our food was because all the tables around us had already gotten their food, even the tables that came in after us. He said he'd ask our server and left. We had to ask again before our server came up to us and said that she had lost our order.
When we confronted her, she said immediately asked "are you sure you gave it to me?" She claimed she had been looking for it. However, in the 40 minutes that we waited for our food, she did not come to check on us even though we were the only table without food. In the 40 minutes of us waiting, she was eating her own food on the service counter and talking to her co-workers with her mouth full of food. Note, she wasn't on break, she was still attending to other customers.
We will be calling management about this employee (employee with long pink hair and...
