I’ve been coming to Truscott for years and I don’t plan on returning any more.

I used to come to buy their amazing cannolis and lasagnas, but I had a really bad experience recently that ruined the place for me. I called for a quote for a custom cake and they quoted me a price for the cakes I wanted ($65 for each custom cake). A normal cake order with whatever flavour and writing you want on top is typically $45. They charge a $20 fee if you want the cake make custom which I wanted because I was throwing an 80s/ disco themed party for two of my friends that had a birthday in the same time.

I called about the design I wanted, but they weren’t understanding what I wanted and suggesting coming in the store to show the customer cake guy some photos and discussing what I wanted. So I agreed to come in, and the first time I show up, they are too busy and tell me to come back another time. I come back another time and he finally has a chance to discuss my order. (Good thing I came 3 weeks early to start ordering the cake) I showed him photos of silver cakes with glitter and a lot of pipping work (monochromatic) that I wanted for one. The other cake I wanted all white but same pipping work. (Included reference photo in review)

He said no problem and that he could also add Italian black cherries instead of the red fake cherries they normally use in other bakeries. I said great! Was excited for the cakes.

They turned out nothing like the reference photos and did not even include the cherries he talked about at all! He also ruined the monochromatic look by adding colour that didn’t match the cakes. The pipping work was non existent. (You can judge for yourself by the photos) There would’ve been nicer pipping work done on a Costco slab cake than on this one. Not to mention that it also tasted like one. If I knew I was going to get that quality of a cake, I would’ve never ordered and just opted for Costco to get the same look - or paid the same money and actually have gotten cakes at a better bakery.

I called the bakery about my issue and spoke with the owner about what had happened and they said they would talk with the custom cake guy before calling me back. The custom cake guy calls me about a week or two later after I had sent a fully documented email about the situation to try to gaslight me about the cakes. We rediscussed what had happened and he only offered me “something” the next time I come in since they could not offer a refund. I do not plan on coming back so I will never see that money back.

Completely disappointing experience. And I just wanted to mention that I like everything else they do like their cannolis and lasagnas and grocery. But because of this expensive negative experience, I can’t bring myself to ever return.

Do not order their cakes if you expect anything better than grocery store or Costco quality!

Update: the owner and cake designer offered me a discount if I ever came back to pouches anything to make it up to me. I told them I have no intention of returning to spend more money, but if they were comfortable I told them I could send my mom to use the discount as she rarely treats herself to bakery pastries.

They told me, “not a problem,” she can come in and pick something out. I asked them to specify what the discount would be so that my mom would know what to expect when she would go in. They would not tell me and said that she can ask the manager when she goes in.

My mom went and they guilted her out of purchasing anything due to this review. Instead of leaving a better impression, they wasted both mine and now my mother’s time again. What a waste and no sense of customer service.

No respect for a customer loyalty and life time value. As someone who was going here for years before, I’ve advised all my friends and family to never purchase from here again.

After reading several reviews, it seems like this is a common issue with their custom cakes and the guy who is in charge of them. There are so many more better bakeries around. Anything else is...

Posting this Google review 12 days after this experience. I had sent an email to this bakery, in which I had no response. Let’s share with the public so they too don’t waste their time.

I just wanted to share my first experience with visiting your bakery.

I had been following you on instagram and that’s where I saw all the wonderful breads and deserts. Everything looked amazing. I finally had the opportunity today, to come down with my family.

I loved the bakery! So cute! Lots of great things in it, however I was so disappointed by the food.

Both my mom and I had purchased your veal sandwiches. Mine was nice, my moms however had literally NO veal in it. More like a veggie Sandwich. So that was very disappointing.

I had ordered the cheesecake brownie as well as the lobster tail (roll) desert. You had two kinds in the show case. One with a white topping, and the other with a chocolate topping. The young man working the desert counter was unknowledgeable about your pastries. I had asked for the Nutella one that I had seen on instagram. It was not available. And the sign said they were both custard. But one had chocolate. So I asked about that. He said it’s just the topping. They are custard. Well, I sit down to eat it with my children and it’s not custard, it’s chocolate, and it was so hard it was impossible to eat. I was under the assumption this was a flaky pastry. I was almost ripping my teeth out trying to bite through. For $4.50 I expected it to be custard and a fresh pastry at that. I saved the cheesecake brownie for this evening. I went to cut it for my three children. There was nothing “cheesecake” about this. The brownie was so dry it crumbled. Not a nice first impression of a bakery. My expectations were much higher. And I expected much fresher. How old were these desserts?

I also had purchased two arancini’s and the sausage roll. Again disappointed. The sausage roll had no flavour, and the arancini, no cheese, Mildest flavours ever. For an Italian bakery, again expected so much more. Everything looked amazing, but lacked in taste.

I spent $50 at your bakery today and there’s not one thing that I was happy with. I have some spicy cacciatore to try and I pray that’s decent. UPDATE. Cacciatore is horrible! Not spicy what so ever and literally tastes like nothing, wow!

Also your baguette selection. I only seen a sour dough, and multigrain bread. No white, calabrese. That was originally the reason for this visit. So I spent a bunch of money, and didn’t even get what I had come down there for.

Just wanted to share some feedback because overall the experience was anything but...

My boyfriend and I stopped by Truscott on our way into Toronto from Buffalo.

There was quite the extensive selection of hot food items. Daily pasta, focaccia paninis, fried chicken, etc. On the first trip, I tried the daily pasta with two meatballs and my boyfriend had the tortellini in cream sauce. My dish could have done with some more salt, especially the meatballs, but my boyfriend's was delicious! The filling of the tortellini was exceptional, so much so that we got this again on our second visit. Pasta dishes came with a bread roll, which were quite lovely. Soft with a nice chew and delicious with some good quality butter.

There's a rack next to the fresh breads of (I'm assuming) bread that's a day or two old and sells for a bit cheaper. From here, I got some rolls, mini baguettes, and Portuguese rolls. All of the bread still felt soft and fresh despite being older than a day, and I've stashed some in my freezer to reheat in my oven for when I want freshly baked bread!

In addition to this, there was quite the impressive selection of packaged pastas, sauces and jams, drinks, and various other sweets such as pies, cookies, and danishes.

But the star of the show was the pastry case. Again, a very impressive array of pastries. If you buy six or more pastries, they aren't taxed! On our first visit, we tried the pecan butter tart, lemon bar, Portuguese tart, chocolate raspberry roll, tiramisu slice, and maritozzi. My favorites were the maritozzi and Portuguese tart. I would drive to Toronto and back just for those two pastries. This place is a must visit and...

Truscott Bakery is a locally owned Italian Bakery, Hot Food Kitchen, and Grocery store. The grocery store has imported Italian grocery items, oils, etc. You can expect to find a really good selection of dry pasta, cheeses, and frozen items. While I haven't tried any of the hot food table items, it looks very good, and is reasonably priced as well. I had the opportunity to try both the espresso based drinks and some of their pastries. Their espresso is a classic Italian style and it comes served in a very nice glass (takeaway available). It's also very reasonably priced at $2, making it much cheaper than other places like Starbucks, and considerably better as well. The cappuccino is also very good, and the presentation is amazing. The Americano was also good as well, but I would highly recommend the espresso alone, first. My one complaint would be the cup handle itself is rather small, making it difficult to drink at times. The pastries are very well made as well, and will definitely be coming back! We had an assortment of cheesecakes, macaroons, and cannolis. All were absolutely amazing. We also bought some of their freshly baked bread. I haven't had it yet but it's so soft and smells amazing, cannot wait to try it. This is a great local establishment. The store is a bit on the small side so it can be tricky to get through when there are a lot of patrons inside, however. Lots of parking in the lot, as it's part of a larger plaza. They also have a great patio area as well, so there is ample seating on the outside, and some on the inside.

I ordered a custom cake for my husband birthday which cost me around $70. They called out the head backer who went over everything with me. I showed her a picture of what the cake should look like and she even took a picture of it with her phone. I came to pick up the cake on Saturday and turns out the backer I was talking to was not working. So the man (maybe owner not sure) brought out the cake and showed it to me. I was shocked and didn't know what to say. It looked NOTHING like I asked for. I wanted a naked cake with a FEW black berries on one side. They loaded the entire cake with fruits similar to the ones you get at a regular backery and they put chocolate pieces on it also. By the time I got the courage to complain and told the man this is not what I ordered his response was "well it is edible and looks delicious". yes, that's fine it tasted good but that's not the point of a CUSTOM cake which I paid an extra $40 for on top of the regular cake prices. Anyways, the cake was fine and I ended up taking it because I had no time as my party was in 1hr and the man did not offer anything but I was very dissapointed. If your looking for a specific style definitely do not order from here. I also ordered 15 cannolis which tasted good. At least the cannolis turned out as expected. I posted a picture of what the cake was suppose to look like and what the backery gave me.
