Beautiful, newly opened restaurant and bar located right on Main st.
Taverna was really easy to to find, with bold and easily visible signage on the exterior of the building.
When you walk into the entry/reception area, you are greeted by a large open concept area with a sprawing bar, with enough counter space and chairs to sit atleast 10 people. The alcohol selection and diversity is downright mind boggling and is sure to please all kinds of palates.
I was promptly greeted by the gentleman behind the bar, and was seated in a booth with a food and drink menu. Since I already knew I was ordering from the lunch menu (available 11:30-14:30) i didn't bother looking at the menu much, except for the alcohol menu. It appears that they carry a wide range of wines and spirits, and have an extensive list of whiskeys available.
I ordered the chicken shawarma plate, which comes with greek potatos, rice and a shawarma skewer. I opted to get the greek salad for an extra 3$.
While I waited for the food, I observed the decor and the general ambiance. Since it is all open concept, it feels like one large room, which ultimately makes it a more welcoming and lively atmosphere.
Everything is brand new, appears to be well taken care of and operated with pride and devotion . While it is going for a greek theme, it is also infused with a bit of elevation and class. The marble/stone used on the bar and wall area certainly adds an extra touch of sophistication. The mythological greek themes are also a nice touch. There is also an outdoor balcony area if you wish to be seated outside.
Before the main course arrived, I was brough some complementary grilled pita with olive oil and spices, which had a nice crunch but was lacking in flavour.
The main dish arrived shortly thereafter. Upon my first glance at the entirety of the dish, I was slightly underwhelmed. The skewer was thin and the potatos had an unusual appearance. Admittedly, I've never had authentic greek food before so I went in with an open mind.
The good: the greek salad was the highlight of the meal. Large pieces of tomato, cucumber, feta and drizzled with some vinaigrette. Very delicious and flavorful. the potatos were decadent and flavourful. They had a boiled exterior texture while still being dense within. The texture/appearance can be polarizing at first, but definitely worth trying.
The bad: The shawarma skewer was thin but wasn't dry. It was cooked well, but was lacking flavour you would expect from flame charbroiling. the rice tasted almost identical to minute maid rice, which was unpleasant.
The food was good. Was it anything note worthy? Not really. Yet, I'm not knowledgeable enough on the topic of greek cuisine to make a fair judgement on this topic.
That being said, due to the excellent service I received from the barman (older gentleman with a man bun) the wide variety of spirits available, the nice welcoming atmosphere and decent food, you can guarantee I'll be back to explore further...
Read moreI will start off by saying Taverna was One of the best meals I have enjoyed in a long time.
We started with the Calamari ($19) and what a great start it was. Probably one of the best I have ever had, very tender. It came with a delicious side of tzatziki, and a half roasted lemon which was a great touch. One critique, I didn’t find there was enough tzatziki with the calamari, but not a big deal as we ordered a larger side of tzatziki ($7). We also enjoyed the extra tzatziki with the lovely, complimentary Pita bread(and plenty of it).
For our mains, My wife went with the Authentic Souvlaki($24), she upgraded the side salad to the Greek salad ($3). She absolutely loved her meal.
My main was the Chicken Souvlaki ($29), I also upgraded the side salad to the Greek salad ($3). OMG my meal was so good. Tender well seasoned chicken, accompanied with amazing lemon roasted potatoes, a nice Greek salad and rice. Both my wife and I are not quite sure what kind of sorcery they used for those amazing lemon roasted potatoes that were included with both our mains, but WOW.! They were absolutely amazing. Those potatoes were the MVP of the meal. ( Most Valuable Potatoes)
For dessert we brought home a slice of Baklava ($9) and it too was delicious.
It was a long week so a few drinks were had. With that being said the entire bill ended up being $197. Money well spent as this was an excellent meal experience, enjoyed with my beautiful wife. Will definitely be returning with friends and family. I highly recommend visiting...
Read moreThis was our first time! Can't wait to return! From the moment we arrived until our departure, we felt that we were looked after and the only ones there, although the place was packed! Upon arriving at the host podium, we were asked if we had had a chance to phone ahead (I love this, rather then, do you have a reservation?) They sat us outside on a beautifully constructed patio with a great sound system with great music playing! Summer, our server was great! Loved the comedic banter with all of the other staff. Everyone is very confident in their ability to deliver service and the quality of that service and the quality of the food too! When we went to pay, we were aske to go inside to the bar as the signal for the handheld machine was not that great outside. When we arrived inside the bar and stools were full. I thought, oh great, this will take a while. Nope, we were immediately shown to the end of the bar. The bartend who was busy making drinks but still acknowledged us, so I felt that we would not be in the way but then I saw that the end of the bar was where the servers were picking up their drinks. I thought again, great we will be in the way. NOPE, each server picking up their drinks said hello or asked us how we were. Summer processed our bill very quickly and thanked us for coming in and wished us a good evening. As we walked towards the door, two more staff thanked us for coming in. They understand guest service! Great service! Oh, and...
