While in Moncton for a conference, I was looking for a place to grab a decent meal and catch up with an old high school friend. I hadn’t heard of the Tide & Boar Gastropub before this trip, but it was close to my hotel, and the reviews seemed promising, so we decided to give it a try. My son was also with me.
The atmosphere inside was lively but not overwhelming, with a cozy, slightly rustic interior that gives off a mix of modern gastropub and down-to-earth East Coast hospitality. Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, and we were seated quickly despite the place being moderately busy.
I ordered the fish and chips paired with one of their local craft beers. The fish was beautifully battered and fried to a crisp golden brown, with tender, flaky fish inside and perfectly seasoned fries on the side. My son went with a steak and a lemonade, and while the steak wasn’t massive, it was well-cooked and flavourful.
Here’s the catch: the bill, including tip, came out to just under $90. For a gastropub, that’s steep—especially when you’re not ordering cocktails or appetizers. I do realize this is Moncton, not Montreal, and that sometimes prices are inflated due to a lack of nearby competition or smaller supply chains. Still, it felt off. The quality of the food was very good, and the experience was positive, but I can’t help but feel the pricing pushes it out of the casual dinner territory.
It’s a great spot for tourists wanting to try something local and well-reviewed, and I’m glad I had the chance to visit and catch up with an old friend. But unless the prices come down a bit or the portions go up, I don’t see myself returning on a...
Read moreWe stopped into Tide and Boar after a costco trip. This was probably the best experience we have had here. It was a beautiful day, and there was plenty of outdoor seating, so we made our way to the host. She was super friendly and told us we could have a seat anywhere that had utensils and menus. We found our way to the table. Bottles of water already there were a great touch! Our server came to our table quickly to see if we wanted any drinks and that we could look up the beers on tap from our phones. I'm not really a fan of that, as not everyone brings their phones. (I'm not sure if there are other options). We weren't having any adult beverages, so that was fine. We knew pretty much before we got there what we wanted. My partner ordered the Boar Poutine, and I had Unami pork bites. The Boar poutine is large enough for 2 or 3 people. It has lots of meat and cheese on top. The gravy comes on the side, and they have their own homemade ketchup, which is delicious (a little kick to it). My Unami pork bites were good. But I did notice they made them a bit different. Usually, the Sriracha is drizzled on top, but this time, it was costed on the meat. I didn't really like that as much. But they were still good. There is just a little change in flavor. Our food came so quickly it was amazing. Our server was super friendly and asked our plans for the day. We loved the outdoor vibe , with the lights, smelling the smoker, lounge seats and tables. Also we seen on the chalk board there are more meats available after 4 or 5 certain days of the week off the smoker. Hopefully we can catch that next time! Cannot wait for...
Read moreVery disappointing experience. To start, the beers are bland and lacking taste. Tried 3 of the IPA's and these have to be some of the worst I've had anywhere. The light beer they offer is equally disturbing.
Meals. Not what I would characterize as pub food unless this is the definition of pub grub. The burger is 2 thin slabs of meat that are overcooked, and without the heavily laden mayo sauce would be classified as eating cardboard. The wings were overcooked and super dry resembling something that was cooked hours before and kept under the heat lamp till an order came up. Fries are a Hodge podge of potatoe chunks, bits and peices that are loaded with salt. Heaven help you if you're trying to reduce your salt intake. Pizza looked great upon delivery but don't forget to use the knife as the crust was tough.
Service. What service? They appeared to be understaffed. We saw only 2 waitresses for what appeared to be a full house. When we finally got our server to take our order she responded her shift was over and we'd have to get the another staff member to take the order. Timing is everything I guess.
Atmosphere. Yes there is air to breath here. The place is bare and spartan. It does have character in the huge wall comprised of hundreds of beer cans. The noise level is also very high, most likely due to the industrial style in the decor and open kitchen facilities.
All in all a very disappointing experience. Lack luster beers, cheesy eats, and overall an uncomfortable place to meet for...
