Upon walking in to the cafe, I felt unsafe with daggers stared at me from people in the cafe. The only masked person and hijab wearing person walking in, after working at the clinic just a block away. I called my sister because I felt so uncomfortable but I thought I should at least try to have a nice lunch.
While waiting in line, the person taking orders ignored me and asked the person after me for their order. When my order was taken, I asked to sit in doors, and they said “oh but there aren’t any seats.” This was not said to anyone else.
When I sat down, I moved to accommodate three other customers. While sitting down, the waiter came to my table grabbed my receipt without even asking me or looking at me and walked away. As he politely smiled and spoke to other customers, I said excuse me 3 times before he even looked at me. I felt like I wasn’t even a human.
When he finally acknowledged me, I said “that is my receipt.” And he said “oh you need it? Okay.” Then threw it at my table and walked away.
When he returned with my food I asked if there is something wrong with my presence in this restaurant. He said not at all and that it’s just a busy time and it’s lunch so they’re going fast. I explained that I don’t feel safe, respected or comfortable and I want to take my food away. He said he took my receipt because the table had people there and he thought it was dirty. There are so many ways to clean a table while acknowledging the person sitting down and being respectful.
Overall the entire experience made me so unwelcome and uncomfortable. I don’t recommend this place at all if you’re a person of colour or a hijab...
Read moreThis is one of my fave brunch spots. It's friendly for both vegans and carnivores alike. the must have orders on the menu are: The halloumi sandwhich- with mint coleslaw, chipotle mayo, honey and grilled halloum cheese is amazing when done right. sometimes it's a little too thin for my liking, but always yummy The VPP (veggie pulled pork) sandwhich. You can get this on a corn tortilla for a gluten free option or in a bun (as is customary)- it is amazing, and would fool even the most carnivourous in the bunch. They also have a real pulled pork sandwhich, but this one is made with tofu skin marinated in a rich bbq sauce, topped with pickles, chipotle mayo and hot peppers. The coffee here is amazing In the summer grab yourself a "Powermade" it's their home brew of iced tea made with hibiscus, cinnamon and lemon (from what I can taste)- its super refreshing.
The ambiance is kind of awesome. Much better to go here in the summer where there is an abundance of seating outside on picnic benches. Inside it is a mix between a depanneur and a diner- with seats and the counter and more limited seating.
Vibe is hipster, vegan mixed with blue collar workers and those who work in the area. The special of the day is also worth trying, especially the...
Read moreFor those who think I only eat at upscale restaurants: WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?
Listen to me very carefully, I was never in this scene of the status or the fame. When you guys reach out to me and ask if I eat for free- You might wanna sit down and reevaluate why you wanna do this to begin with. Come talk to me when your credit card statement is starting to look like a restaurant menu. 😂
When people ask me where they should go eat and the feedback I get in return is positive? THAT’S what truly make me happy: To be transparent and be reliable. In all honesty, some hidden gems out there just deserve as much recognition as the big boys in the food industry.
Le Pick Up looks like your regular convenient store, a little raw. But when they tell you to not judge a book by its cover, they weren’t joking. With rock music blasting in the background, while you’re sitting by the counter- you know this is the real deal. Juicy, tender, and most importantly mouthwatering- this $10 Cuban sandwich is THE winner. I always have this idea in my head: It this place worth the drive? The answer is yes.
I low key wanna know where your favourite sandwich is in...
