My wife read in a Toronto paper about the owner of Estiatorio Milos who has a number of restaurants around the world. I was scrambling for a place to celebrate a substantial wedding anniversary, and I managed to get a table at Milos.
Firstly, everything is true that you've probably heard about Milos. That it is a first rate restaurant. That the food is a cut above the rest. That the decor is perfection. That the service is impeccable.
And it is.
And maybe that should garner them 5/5, but for me, they're not pushing the envelope. The taramasalata was possibly the best I've had. The frittered zucchini and eggplant is delicious. The bread and olive oil is very good. The octopus was extraordinary. If you don't read this review further, I'd suggest just getting a huge selection of tapas, which are broad an varied.
Where it starts to fall down for me, is that it's just a little too perfect. It's precisely what you expect, and nothing more. Nothing less, but nothing more.
The service is excellent, maybe just a little too perfect -- and when the server warmed up, it was great. But I did have to ask for a second bottle of water twice from the back waiter.
The main dish we ordered was a little disappointing. It was halibut, which suffers from a lack of flavour generally, and in my opinion needs a lot of work to make it interesting. On the other hand, it did represent precisely the way halibut is, and it was subtle with a lovely tomato that had turned into a nice coulis. But it needed more flavour to my taste. The rapini was good -- nothing special, just good rapini.
Frites were good -- needed a little more work.
So this is a place which presents precisely what the food is, in its most elemental form, and that does require some level of respect, which I definitely give.
However, this is 2024, and while it would have been mind blowing in 1979, this is just excellent. And that's where, for me, the fault lies. I wouldn't hesitate to take clients there, because it is renowned, expensive, fancy, and excellent. But in 2024, there are just too many interesting alternatives...
Read moreTo celebrate my hubby’s birthday, we made reservations at Milos. The only time slot available was 8:45. We reluctantly took it as they assured us there would not be a wait. We requested to be served by Dritan, our favourite waiter, and they agreed to have us seated in his section. We arrived at 8:30 (15 min early). After standing at the bar for one hour, and observing the inexperienced high-school aged girls fumble with the reservations and the seating arrangements at the entrance, we were told we would finally be seated at 9:30! At the end of that hour long wait we were rewarded with the smallest most uncomfortable table imaginable (my hubby is a big guy). The nearest table was practically attached to our own and it felt like the girl sitting next to us was with our own party. I had to constantly remove her long wavy hair from our table and our plates, which was an inevitable constant mishap considering how close we were. Forget about having a private conversation, that was impossible. The waiter we requested was nowhere in sight. The service was clumsy yet not terrible, certainly not the exceptional standard we had been accustomed to with Dritan. The only saving grace was the food, which was usual Milos quality. But here is the thing, 500 dollars later, we left feeling frustrated, cheated and bloated. Having eaten so late, the indigestion was painful. All I could think of was what happened to the days when Milos patrons were treated to the finest dining experience and above all their time was respected and their requests honoured. Sadly, we will not be returning. Milos has turned into a cheap cliche. This once highly sophisticated establishment is nothing more than a distant memory of its former self. There are other restaurants in Montreal that have surpassed Milos in quality and promise the customer the most exquisite culinary experience. And they know how to deliver because they have highly trained professional staff to ensure customer satisfaction; something Milos quite...
Read morereserved and showed up to our table with less kids than presumed , we have been guests here for over 15 years on the regular the reception took our card charged it without any authorization due to less guests the following day , when we clearly spoke to manager and she advised np it’s ok , and gave us another table for guests that didn’t show up , we were 7 and our bill was easily 150$ per head /person without wine , and she was offering a 50$ a head groupe menu , i ordered a la carte and beyond à normal order for 5 adults and 2 children , so they didn’t lose nothing with our attendance
at the time of our dinner at the door they had mentioned no problem will just get you a table for 7 and and it’s ok , won’t charge me a difference ,
following day i see à charge taken on my cc for 200$ for 4 less ppl ,
i called and she doesn’t want to understand nothing but say he said she said , when i told her i spoke to manager at our arrival and she agreed that no worries they will just get us a table for other group that didn’t show up , while we had our dinner our table of 11 was broken up immediately and walk in guests took the space so no waiting for them ,
