This ramen restaurant advertised itself as a âJapanese ramen restaurant,â so as a Japanese couple, we were really looking forward to visiting. However, we were surprised to find that the taste was quite different from authentic Japanese ramen. If I were to think of it as a different type of noodle dish, it was enjoyable, but it was a bit disappointing to imagine people perceiving this as Japanese ramen.
We ordered tonkotsu ramen and shoyu ramen. The first bite of the shoyu ramen immediately stood out because the soy sauce flavor was completely differentâit seemed to use a more fragrant soy sauce, possibly Chinese-style. It was a unique taste Iâve never experienced before in my life.
The pork topping on the ramen looked very crispy, thick, and appetizing, but the flavor was dominated by salt, pepper, and oil, which made it difficult for us to finish even though there were only two slices of chashu. The soup also had a noticeable oily layer on the surface, and we found it to be overly greasy. Instead of the rich tonkotsu flavor we know and love, the soup had more of a sesame-like aroma than tonkotsu depth.
Overall, we probably wonât return to this restaurant. My wife, who absolutely loves ramen, left some behind for the first time ever, which really surprised me.
For those looking for authentic Japanese ramen here in Montreal, Iâd recommend trying other places.
If youâre open to trying an Asian-inspired noodle dish with adjusted flavors, this might still be worth a visit. Weâve only tried two ramen bowls, so perhaps exploring their donburi or other side dishes could lead to a different experience.
*On a note unrelated to the ramen, the Japanese anime merchandise, posters, and decorations inside the restaurant were very eye-catching. As an anime fan, I was initially drawn to the store because of them. Quand jâamĂšne ma mĂšre manger du beau, bon, pas cher, la soupe japonaise est sans rival. Câest ce quâelle appelle la nourriture «ârĂ©confortanteâ» par excellence. Câest comme un cĂąlin sous forme de bouillon veloutĂ© et relevĂ©, de nouilles de blĂ© al dente et de morceaux de viande de qualitĂ© (du porc, de prĂ©fĂ©rence). Sous la vigilance d'une myriade de personnages d'anime et de manga qui peuplaient l'Ă©tablissement, de nombreux ramens-prĂ©tendants sur le menu lui faisaient les yeux doux, le tan tan Ă©picĂ© (une trĂšs bonne spĂ©cialitĂ© du local, agrĂ©ablement Ă©picĂ©e que jâai faite mienne pour ce repas), le gyu shio, le shoyu, le yuzu⊠mais ma mĂšre a dĂ©jĂ un amoureux et il sâappelle Tonkutsu. Pourquoiâ? Parce quâil est richeâ! Il a beaucoup de muscles (celui du Kazo possĂ©dait en prime des morceaux de porc parmi les plus tendres)â! Il sâentraĂźne (mijote) pendant de trĂšs nombreuses heures jusquâĂ atteindre cette texture parfaite⊠pour une Ă©treinte. HĂ©lasâ! Cette derniĂšre nâĂ©tait pas suffisante pour la tenir au chaud.
La porte dâentrĂ©e se fermait mal, laissant sâinfiltrer cet insidieux froid qui vous donne la chair de poule. On remarquait le courant dâair pĂ©nĂ©trer dans la salle Ă manger alors que le signe «âouvertâ» remuait contre la ville, en apparence dotĂ© de vieâŠ

Cependant, tels Ă©taient ses propos avant de remarquer quâon nous avait fait rĂ©gler par mĂ©garde la mauvaise facture, celle de la table dâĂ cĂŽté⊠Effectivement, comme accompagnement, nous nâavions pas commandĂ© ni dâedame, ni de boissons, seulement des croquettes au maĂŻs (au dĂ©licieux contraste entre le croustillant de la friture et son intĂ©rieur moelleux et fondant) et des takoyaki (ces fameux plats issus de la cuisine de rue japonaise qui, Ă leur tour, offrent un Ă©quilibre des plus satisfaisants entre le croquant et lâonctueux).
LâhonnĂȘte serveur, au constat de son erreur, est devenu tout confus et tremblait des mains, semblant se faire un peu de mauvais sang. Voulant aussitĂŽt y remĂ©dier, il a commis deux autres Ă©tourderies, dâabord en entrant le montant du remboursement en oubliant la taxe, puis en me remettant un deuxiĂšme remboursement au lieu de me charger le prix rĂ©el de notre soirĂ©e. Pourtant, au lieu de mâen formaliser, je ressentais plutĂŽt de la compassion et jâavais envie de lui dire dâarrĂȘter de sâen faire. Combien de fois mâest-il arrivĂ© dâerrer en dĂ©pit de nobles intentions et dâirrĂ©prochables attitudesâ? Dâailleurs, ça nâa pas du tout gĂąchĂ© notre tranquille soirĂ©e. Saw the high rating, decided to try it out. Tried various items and they are all better than your typical Kinton ramen.
The karaage was juicy and not extremely salty, fairly crispy. The dipping sauce was a tiny bit to the sour side. Pork creamy tonkotsu, the kids loved it.
Pork spicy Paitan, very flavorful, not salty, they give you a fairly thick piece of pork belly, nicely charred up. But if you are into spicy food like me, consider asking them to make it extra spicy, because mine was like a 1 out of 10 on my spicy scale.
Could use a little bit more noodles and the broth temperature wasn't...
