When I get to a new place I usually feel the vibe by observing the attitude of those already being served at tables around the place. They seemed happy and relaxed. Aldea was recommended time as I love bacallau and was told that the owner of Minhota restaurant had open a new one. I had eaten bacallau at Minhota a while ago and liked it very much so I decided to try the new one. Excellent service and food Nice atmosphere without overdoing The bacalau Aldea is the signature dish and if you like a thick white bacalhau cut, oven cooked with olive oil/onions/potatos, this is as good as it gets. Close to perfection. I am very picky with Portuguese dishes and mostly with the simple, more traditional dishes. I was also very impressed with the "bolinho de bacalhau". Again chances are they are not at the right temperature or they are too greasy or even we do not taste the Bacallau just the potatoes. The aldea ones were GOOD! to the point I went to the kitchen to congratulate the one in charge of the bolinho: a nice Portuguese lady with a big smile, very proud of her kitchen. Very good evening all in all. I do...
Read moreLast night my family and i had the dis-pleasure of going to Aldea for diner. We arrived early (6) and were immediately met with horrible service, overshadowed only by the mediocrity of the food. When our 3 steaks arrived, the owner threw it in front of us yelling “steak” like my junior chicken was ready at McDonalds. Not advising which steak was well done, medium etc.Normally not one to complain, i was dismayed when my filet mignon came well done instead of medium-rare. To their credit the owner took my plate back and said he would fix the errors. Im happy to say that 6 minutes later I had a wonderful steak infront of me, kind of quick for a filet Mignon. The inside of my steak was colder than a January day in Montreal. We lost count of the number of mistakes they made with all our meals. When my brother-in-law made the remark that one of his entrees had not been served, the owner thought it would be a good idea to tell him to change his understandably annoyed tone. The whole family was absolutly floored by the lack of profesionnalism. Definitly the WORST RESTAURANT IVE...
Read moreLocated in the Portuguese neighbourhood of Montreal, this relatively new Portuguese restaurant features a lovely and promising menu. Unfortunately, the chef has no idea what he/she is doing. My grilled calamari weren't fresh and were partly raw; I asked for them to be cooked further, but that changed nothing--they simply didn't taste fresh, so that I ate very little. One potato was raw in the middle as well. A friend of mine ordered the grilled cod, and not only was it riddled with fishbones, but the skin was charred and tasted bitter. The lobster was dry and tasteless, and the Russian salad served with it didn't taste fresh. The chocolate mousse was excessively sweet. I've been eating in Portuguese restaurants in this neighbourhood for 51 years and can tell you I have never felt so disappointed. The best thing the owners, who are very friendly, can do is make sure their chef knows a thing or two about cooking. Sorry, but there is no way I can give this a greater...
