My favourite bar/club in Montreal. I fell in love with it the first time I stepped into this place. I love the decor and the overall chill atmosphere. I love the speakeasy vibe and the aesthetics of it. It smells like chinese herbs coming down the stairs, and there is a tiny bar with a bathroom next to it that's more for taking photos than for utility, and the main bar has a funky vibe that looks like your uncle's 80s basement (in a good way) -- with a poster of Jackie O, a cheetah poster, a butterfly exhibit, a statue of Walt Disney(?), cheetah print carpet on the floor and part of the wall, a few leather couches, a bunch of vinyl records, nice lamps, and a discreet bar. It's great because you can dance, but also take a break and sit on a couch and relax or chat with a friend. Most nights the DJs and the music are great -- especially on Fridays. That one disco music night where they played actual vinyl records was incredible and such a blast. This place is my best hidden secret, but it's gotten a bit more crowded recently because it's gotten more well known over the past few months. They don't advertise this place much, and rely on word of mouth for the most part (and I hope it stays that way). The drinks are good (they've got fancy cocktails) which are a bit pricey -- but I justify it because they're cocktails made with top-tier ingredients/alcohol and also because I love the vibe of this place. However, I am sad that their deconstructed pina colada has been taken off the menu, as well as not including the solid square ice cube to all of their drinks anymore, and the big dice cube menu seems to be missing as well when I went recently. Please never change, baby! You are a gem and a much needed and very welcome place in Montreal:) This place...
Read moreHorrible experience with one of the bouncers working the door. Our group had planned ahead and put our names on the DJ’s “free and unlimited” guestlist. Upon arriving there was the guestlist line and a normal entry line. After waiting around 30 minutes another bouncer - roughly 5’10, tan, baseball cap - came out, began hand-selecting people from the lines to let in, and made his own guestlist line in the middle of the original two lines. When we asked the original bouncer for more information he said it was ‘completely out of his hands’ and ‘up to the other guy.’ From this point on in the night this new bouncer didn’t attend to either original line, only letting in those he seemingly deemed worthy. After telling me in English that the guestlist entry was full - despite it being literally “free and unlimited” - he then in French allowed in a group of 4 girls who claimed they had guestlist. When I asked him what the issue was he bluntly said “I already told you it’s not happening” and then refused to speak with us face to face for the rest of our time there. Never in my life have I been so blatantly disrespected by an employee. As someone who works within the AGCO and denies service daily, this was appalling behaviour. I had never been to Baby before this and I do not wish to ever spend my money at such an elitist establishment with such entitled people (unsurprisingly all men). 0/10 experience, totally turned me off from ever wishing to patron here...
Read moreI had reservations for the tasting menu on a Saturday night. The bar was not too hard to find, especially considering it is a speakeasy. We arrived a bit early and were able to sit at the bar while waiting. When you get the tasting menu, you are drinking in a separate room with all the others who reserved for the same time as you. So you have to wait for all parties. We were seated around 10 minutes past the reservation time.
The experience was quite different than anything else. The two bartenders were lovely and Tao did a great job of explaining the drinks. The decor was beautiful and the seats were comfy. When you walk into the bar, though, you got hit with a wave of humidity. It was quite overpowering at first but it seemed to dissipate.
I would considering going back again maybe to visit the regular bar but for sure to try the new...
