I had been wanting to try this noodle spot for a while because of the good reviews and long lines. It was definitely worth it!! The value and quality was amazing and their noodle soup has a beefy and aromatic flavour from the spices they use. Go around 2-4pm to avoid the long lines.
Large traditional Lanzhou noodles: $15.99 Medium beef tendon noodles (weekend only): $14.99 All their noodles are hand pulled, and you can select the width, thickness, and shape (flat or round) you like from their selections. The large noodles are very large and can feed two people but I did not know just how big it was, if you can eat a lot of noodles, then go for it… it’s like a never-ending bowl, and it is amazing. Both the large and medium sizes satisfy my hunger, and I could not finish the large :,)
The traditional Lanzhou noodles have a spicy or not spicy option, the spicy comes with chili oil. It only comes with a few thin slices of beef, cilantro and green onions. Their chili oil is very fragrant, and makes the soup much more flavourful, highly recommend if you can handle your spice. It isn’t too spicy, more like a medium spicy, and you can ask for more or less depending on your preference, or they can bring you a container so you can add it yourself. You may also request Chinese black vinegar and white pepper to add to your soup. The beef tendon noodle soup comes with a lot of tender chunks of meat, much more meat than the traditional Lanzhou noodles, so I think it is worth it to come on the weekend to try it. The soup was the same as the traditional one, but their soup base is really good, very beefy and aromatic with spices.
The servers are friendly, though they are quite a bit rushed due to how busy this place is. They generally speak French, English, and Mandarin. The tables are a bit small and close together, though I don’t find it uncomfortable at all and the restaurant is clean. The ambiance is not fancy, but of a bustling noodle shop, a good place to...
Read moreI always saw the staff making fresh noodles out of the dough. Thin noodles to thick ones. It’s interesting even to stand and see how fast and professional he does that. Then you see he puts them in a big pot of boiling water. After trying some other chinese restaurants in the china town, I decided to try this one too. The waitresses were all running, and even asking me to go stand at the corner the moment I entered. Then while waiting for a vacant seat, I was lucky enough to ask a young chinese couple after me, which option of the menu is the most popular, and I should try. So I ordered the beef noodles( the only noodle option they have) as a trio(with one boiled egg which they put in the noodles), and an optional side dish(there are 3 options , I got the sour/tasty cucumbers). In the menu there are like 6-7 sizes of the noodles, starting from spaghetti thin size to s.th like 1.5 cm flat noodles. I chose s.th in between, about 1cm-width. It was very tasty and yummy, but Very hard to pick up and grab those extra long noodles with the chopsticks (And I AM good at using chopsticks!) I just got like very near to the bowl and tried to sip a little piece of the noodles in :) and then slurp it. It may sound funny but when you experience it you’ll see what I mean. There are even youtube videos for that! I already could eat Pad-Thai or pasta or rice-noodle dishes easily and proudly among my friends, but that was a Real challenge. I think maybe it would be better if they cut them half way. It’ll be still LONG enough! Speaking of the price, it was very reasonable, like 14-15-16 $. But the seating area was a little bit small. In conclusion, I recommend this restaurant. It’s worth trying. For me as a fan of asian cuisin, I’m gonna go again and try their other menu. One tip: you can get extra coriander or beef if you like more, with 1, and 5 $ more...
Read moreAfter reading the lovely reviews of this place and a review that said to avoid the long lines by arriving before they close, we went around 8:40. There was still a line, but not too long. We were seated by 9:10, and ordered shortly thereafter.
The menu is simple. Just 4 starter options and 5 types of noodles. We wanted to get the beef noodle soup, but unfortunately they were out. So maybe don’t go right before they close? I heard that is one of their best dishes and was thoroughly disappointed that it was not available anymore. Instead, we went with the zhajiang noodles, Dan Dan noodles, and Lan Zhou specialty. Their portions are very large, with the large enough for at least two people. I didn’t think that this place was as good as everyone was raving about it. The noodles were the only good part. They were perfectly made and had the right texture and chewiness. For all of the noodle dishes, I felt like it lacked flavor. The only thing that provided the flavor was the hot sauce, which was wonderful. There was also a good amount of vegetables and meat in everything, I just felt like the flavor was not there.
We also ordered a side dish: the edamame and pickled vegetables. That was probably the best dish of the night. It was perfectly salty and the pickled vegetables were delicious.
At the end, we had some leftovers and it cost extra to have a take out box. The servers were fine, clearly overworked. They had no time to talk and was constantly rushing to get to the next table. Overall, I felt like the dishes were just okay. Nothing extremely special like we...
