We just returned from a 3-night stay at the Hampton Inn Montreal Downtown. We selected this hotel because of its walkable location relative to the touristy parts of the Old City and because it is pet-friendly and we were traveling with our dog.
The good: It was clean, parking was easily accessible, and the staff was nice and helpful. The rooms were basic -- no frills, but absolutely fine and on par with what you'd expect of a Hampton Inn. A few things were missing that I would have thought would be included (like a hair dryer, for instance) but it was totally fine. Our room was on the second floor and perfectly quiet at night, which was excellent. It really felt as though there was no one else in the building, and that was great. We'd read reviews ahead of time saying that there's a nightclub on the roof on some nights and it can get loud (truth), so we requested a lower floor room, which was a good move.
The less good: We usually choose hotels with included breakfast, just so we can eat quickly and easily and get on with the day. The breakfast was a madhouse. They serve from 7-9:30, so we got down there around 9 and it was like Lord of the Flies. They did not have enough for the number of guests, and there was barely anything left by 9am. People were grabbing bits and pieces of what was remaining, and it was so packed that there was no seating anywhere. We learned our lesson and came earlier the following days; it was less crowded but the breakfast options were sparse, at best. It was fine, but not as good as other hotel breakfasts.
Also, though the location is proximate to the Old City, the port, and most of the touristy areas, it's also pretty dirty and congested. There were a LOT of people panhandling and hanging around outside the lobby at all hours of the day. Cigarette butts on the ground everywhere, people clogging the lobby entrance, etc. Some of that was because of the club at night but it was most of the day, too. It felt safe (they did amp up security during the club hours - club-goers had a separate entrance and elevator from the hotel guests and there were bouncers at the doors) but not exactly clean and welcoming from outside.
Again, you can walk to the Old City and all of the tourist attractions, so that is a perk. It's slightly uphill to get to the port, but it's very walkable. That made it a good location for us because it was close to everywhere we were headed.
The hotel was clean and quiet (on the lower floors) and if you're looking for a decent place to lay your head at night, it definitely...
Read moreA supposed 4 star hotel with 0 star service. My friend and I called in a head of time to notify the hotel that we want to book a day ahead that we land which was 7/8am in the morning. That means that we won’t be there for the night, we will be there in the morning to clean up, and take a nap before we got started with the day. They said okay and put a note on our reservation or so they said. NOTE that we have done this before across the world and it isn’t an issue.
The lady with the giant curly brown hair has terrible communication skills and no professionalism. We came in to expect our room to be ready for us like we told them in advanced. The lady was not apologetic at all and said we did a no-show for the room. She made us go through hoops to try to get the refund for that room/day. My friend called customer service that the curly haired lady provided instead of talking to her or dealing with it herself.
During the time of check-out, a white lady helped us out instead. She saw the notes from the phone conversation and asked the curly hair lady about it. I assume the curly hair lady is the manager which makes it worse. We went through all the calling and hoops for the curly haired lady just to say no WHEN SHE TOLD US TO CALL IN. What was the point of wasting our time when it seemed like you already made up your mind and have such an unorganized hotel??
I DO NOT recommend this hotel until that curly hair lady is gone or management is changed. If she’s the manager of that hotel, it’s going to be a sad time dealing with a problem and customer service. She lacks communication skills and zero empathy. Her attitude reflects the entire team. I went to 4 different cities on that trip, and this hotel was even worse than the motel we went to in Niagara Falls. We didn’t get the refund for that night which is $200+ out of pocket, but it’s okay. You know why? When 2 of our other hotels messed up in Toronto and New York, they were able to offer a FREE UPGRADE without any complications and apologized. That’s how you do business and keep customers around. I rather sleep on the streets than support...
Read moreWe stayed for nine nights in July 2025. We had previously stayed at this hotel last year and since then the quality of service has vastly deteriorated. The location is very convenient to the entertainment district. Unfortunately there is a homeless shelter about a block away and the police seem to be visiting there everyday. Breakfast buffet: the breakfast buffet is very poorly managed and regularly runs out of everything including utensils, plates, food and coffee. Even though the hotel posts signs informing guests about when the buffet is going to be busy, the management does not properly manage the buffet accordingly. This results in many people wandering around waiting for everything to be replenished. As this buffet is intended to service both the Hampton inn and the Homewood suites located on the upper floors, there is inadequate space to accommodate everybody in busy times. We ended up bringing our own breads and fruit and yogurt so that we would know that we had something to eat when we came downstairs assuming we had a table. This situation is totally unacceptable and indicates lack of management competence or caring. Housekeeping: during our nine-night stay there were housekeeping deficiencies in seven of those nights. This ranged from complete lack of service to not replacing dirty towels, leaving dirty towels on the floor, failing to clean the shower, failing to replace used items such as soap, etc. We complained numerous times to the front desk who assured us that something would be done. Nonetheless, it is clear that the front desk and housekeeping are not coordinated. We subsequently learned through an insider that the housekeeping services have been outsourced to a third party over which it appears the hotel has no direct control. The front desk staff were sympathetic and eventually agreed to compensate us by reducing our charges as a result of all the aggravation that their lack of services caused us. We have stayed at this hotel before without these kind of problems so given the extreme deterioration of service and proper management we cannot recommend staying...
