Unimpressed. Not that the food, service, and ambiance were really subpar. But there was something less-than-awesome about each of these. In terms of food, it was quite underwhelming. Today's “special” pizza, (squash, fontina, béchamel, and bacon…) was full of red onion. Problem was: the raw onion flavour was overpowering, I understand the concept of having some bold flavours to complement the squash sweetness. But this wasn't a particularly successful execution, especially since there was a fairly unwelcome spiciness in the pie. In a way, the pizza tasted as if the chef were trying to hide something. With green bell pepper, the intention would just have been clearer. The braised pork flank with polenta was better, but Triple Crown’s Colin Perry would have made the dish sing. In fact, the best part might have been the Brussels sprouts salad, which was intriguing enough to warrant a nod. Another thing which reminded me of Triple Crown was the ginger soda. But, then again, the TC version is more enjoyable. Service wasn't really rude but, as it happens on occasion when I dine alone, it was clear that I was perceived as a less-profitable patron. As for ambiance… Isn't there a limit to how dark you can make a restaurant before it feels like you're hiding something? If so, this place is darker than that. I'll give Magpie another chance, of course. Probably for lunch, or at least before dusk. But there are so many other places I want to try. This won't...

First Pizza of the new year coming in hot from @pizzeriamagpie and I have to say it's a banger. First time trying this spot with my buddy and everything was a hit. We got two pies that day which were the meatball style you see here and the Almonds 3 cheese.
I love the decor of this spot, really gives you a feel of a old school resto with the decorative chilling designs out of what looks like a material resembling copper. The atmosphere I could tell at night when the lights come down almost feels like a old school drinkery.
The first Pizza I got was the Meatball, absolutely loved it. I've never had parsley on a pizza before and honestly I can't imagine whilingly adding it in my own but truthfully it did add something to it. The meatballs were delicious and tender, the sauce was on point and the crust and dough itself was amazing a solid 9/10 for what I like to see.
The almond Pizza is one that my buddy choose. Again not one I'd go out of my way to order on my own otherwise but I'm happy he picked it. 3 cheese from gruyere, ricotta and Mozzarella, toasted almonds with salt and spicy honey. Really a fun combination that just works honestly.
Have to give them a try this new year they really make a great product and fun...
Read moreIn all my years of travel, dinning and enjoying the hospitality of consuming delicacies in great spaces… never have I been so disappointed in the policies of a restaurant.
Let me paint the setting, it’s Father’s Day, I’ve just spent a great weekend with my daughter, brought her to get her nails done and waited over 2 hours for the final process.. she says she’s hungry. So what does a loving dad do? Bring her for her favourite meal.. a Marguerita pizza.
Rather than seat us on the dinning room floor, they force my daughter and I to sit at the bar rather than any of the over dozen tables available.
Regardless of the quality of the food I would never recommend a place that rejects people based on whatever it was that led them to refuse us of having a place on main dinning room floor.
There was certainly a preference for a “type” of customer, cause each group of patrons after us received placement at a table without a single question. Be it their skin complexion, or orientation, we were the only patrons aside from a single man asked to sit at the bar
They won’t fail as a business, but nonetheless, this is my honest review of my Father’s Day...
