A Hidden Gem in Montreal's Vegan Scene – Bringing the Flavors of Maharashtra and the Konkan Coast In a city as culturally diverse as Montreal, it's no surprise that the food scene is a rich tapestry of global flavors. However, stumbling upon a humble vegan spot that not only caters to plant-based enthusiasts but also brings the authentic taste of India's Maharashtra state and the coastal Konkan region feels like discovering a hidden treasure. This little gem, lovingly curated by its passionate host, Mr. Abhishek, is one such find. Located in a quiet corner, this vegan joint may not boast flashy decor or a high-end setting, but the unassuming nature of the place only adds to its charm. The focus here is entirely on the food, and it’s clear from the very first bite that this is where all the love and attention have gone. If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to explore the rich culinary traditions of Maharashtra, you’ll recognize the flavors instantly. For those unfamiliar, you’re in for an authentic, flavorful journey that will transport your taste buds directly to the Konkan coast. Maharashtrian cuisine, especially from the Konkan belt, is known for its delicate balance of spices, coconut, tamarind, and fresh, local ingredients. At this vegan spot, Mr. Abhishek has managed to recreate these authentic tastes while staying true to the plant-based ethos. What sets this place apart is its ability to transform simple, traditional ingredients into dishes that are not only delicious but also feel soulful. The care that goes into the preparation is evident, and Mr. Abhishek himself is always on hand to share the stories behind each dish. His passion for the food and his desire to introduce these flavors to the Montreal crowd shine through in every interaction. One of the standout dishes on the menu is the "Vegan Grandma Curry," a hearty and flavorful curry that uses coconut milk as the base, flavored with an array of spices that balance heat with sweetness. It’s served with freshly made rice or roti, and each bite is packed with layers of flavor. While the food is a major draw, what truly makes this place special is the atmosphere. There’s an undeniable warmth to the space, largely due to Mr. Abhishek’s welcoming nature. He takes time to explain the nuances of each dish, often sharing anecdotes from his own experiences growing up in India’s coastal regions. It’s clear that this isn’t just a business for him – it’s a labor of love. Whether you’re a seasoned vegan or someone curious to explore new flavors, you’ll feel like you’ve been invited into Mr. Abhishek’s home for a meal. In a city where vegan restaurants are becoming increasingly popular, this spot stands out for its authenticity and heart. It’s not just about providing vegan food – it’s about offering a true culinary experience that bridges cultures. The flavors are bold, the ingredients fresh, and the hospitality unmatched. If you’re in Montreal and looking to broaden your vegan horizons, this is the place to be. In summary, this vegan joint isn’t just a restaurant – it’s a celebration of Indian culinary heritage, brought to life by the passion and dedication of Mr. Abhishek. Whether you’re craving the bold spices of Maharashtra or simply want to enjoy a wholesome, plant-based meal, this place is a must-visit. You’ll leave not only with a satisfied appetite but also with a deeper appreciation for the rich flavors of the Konkan coast.

TULA translates to 'Balanced' and that's exactly what this restaurant is all about. An extraordinary culinary experience - five stars all the way!! Such homely preparation, felt light yet tasty. Highly recommended for wholesome and scrumptious food lovers! Food: This isn’t your typical Indian restaurant serving the usual paneer, butter naan and Jira rice. If that’s what you’re after, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you're seeking something truly unique, this place delivers in every way. The menu is thoughtfully curated, reflecting genuine passion and care in every dish. We liked it so much that we ate there 3 times during our 3 day stay in Montreal. Here are the things we tried and absolutely loved. I normally like to rank dishes but all dishes came #1. - Koshimbir - a refreshing salad - Grandma’s Special Curry - reminded me of a version of avial - Chapati - very home made feel - Ragda Patties - yummy chat - Tomato Soup - so good, my daughter loved it - Gulkand Panna Cotta - lunch thali - comes with 4 curries, 1 salad, rice, roti and dessert. - jackfruit biriyani - this was out of the world. - Burger - crispy and delicious - Bombay sandwich - we made this to go and ate it after about 8 hours and it was scrumptious - Weekend Brunch Thali - pongal, sambhar, chutney, desset. I dont know how he gets such diverse food SO right - Lentil idlis - they had shredded carrots and green beans. So thoughtful about making healthy food. - Ragi dosa - this is not in the menu but the owner surprised us with it. SO good. - Mango lassi - tasted even better than the dairy mango lassi. This was made with coconut milk yogurt that they make it themselves. I mean talk about the incredible amount of detail and care poured into creating it. - Hibiscus & ginger drink - - Chai - this came with the cutest sugar container on the side (see picture). Owner said he got them Bali when he was travelling. Host, Service and Place: Exceptional service and hospitality! We arrived about 30 minutes before closing, yet were welcomed with genuine kindness. There was no rush — we were encouraged to take our time exploring the menu. The host, Abhishek, patiently walked us through each item, clearly passionate about the food and the experience he offers. What stood out most was — he even recommended other restaurants in town that he personally likes. How often do you see a restaurant owner do that? It was clear he is not running the business just for the money. Once we placed our order, the food arrived promptly and was absolutely delightful. It is a beautiful, boutique restaurant. The interior is beautifully designed with tasteful decor that creates a calming and inviting ambiance. Overall, a great experience.

I liked the brunch here but I wish it were warm, it was cold when it was served to me. I shouldn't have to tell the restaurant staff to serve me a thali warm, given that it took them 30+ mins to bring that, I decided to just eat it as is. I remember hearing another diner complaining about their cold burger and this made me wonder if the food in the restaurant is fresh at all. I came back for the poutine the same day as I wanted to try vegan poutine and read some positive reviews for it but I didn't like it. I was hoping to go to another vegan restaurant for dinner after having poutine but given how slow things were here ( over an hour of waiting - waiting for someone to take my order, waiting for them to get my order and then waiting for the bill), I was unable to make it to the other restaurant for dinner which was very upsetting, I've learnt my lesson. I didn't appreciate the service here - I understand that service can be slow on weekends but this was very slow, the owner didn't take the orders in the sequence of the arrival of people but some random order, this came across as disrespectful. I waited for over half an hour waiting for someone to take my order - I wrote a postcard, wrote down the things I needed to do the next day, thought about all the books I was reading and observed the other people dining in but there was no end to my wait lol. The lady working in the restaurant was rude to me twice and I hope she learns how to treat customers better, had she been there during my first visit, I'm sure she would've helped me avoid coming in a second time. After I'd already waited for a while for someone to take my order during my second visit, she asked me if I wanted any drinks and I politely said I didn't but she forced me to keep the menu saying what if I were to change my mind. And she simply vanished instead of asking if I was ready to order. The funny thing is shortly after the owner took the drinks menu away from me without asking if I wanted drinks or food lol. The second time was when the owner asked me to come over to the counter to settle the bill and when I did, this lady asked me to go back and wait at my table. The owner came over in a minute and generated the bill for me. The disconnect between them seemed frustrating yet funny. The restaurant clearly seems understaffed and even if some of their dishes taste good, the service doesn't warrant visiting again. If you're a normal person i.e. someone who has limited time and has self-respect, go to some other vegan restaurant instead to avoid frustration.

Responding to owners response:

“We serve many people here and if anything our behavior is but condescending. I am sorry if you felt this way.” - First thing you said was in Canada we don’t do things this way. That was condescending.

“ It has happened in the past, that 12 to 14 tables would have walked in at the same time IN AN EMPTY RESTAURANT AT THE SAME TIME before closing (multiple times) where it was awkward and embarrassing to move tables when a couple occupies a table for 4.” - unfortunately I am not in the restaurant business but if I was I would have found a better way to explain and start the conversation without the condescending tone and berating in front of other customers.

“The server mentioned that you did not ask her but just joined the table regardless joking that the restaurant would not like this idea of joining another table of 2 for 4 people. She did not say anything and let it be.” - a. I did ask her for a larger table, the server asked how many people were coming we said two and she pretended not to get it, pointed to a table and walked away. also, we were not joining the other table for any other reason but to keep your glassware which we felt was going to fall otherwise. None of our personal belongings were on the said table. No need to have caused a scene over such a small thing. We were there to enjoy the vibes and sadly your behaviour just ruined our day.

“As far as the couple next to you, l myself joined their table as they ordered a lot of food and drinks and we had space.” - you still had space when we ‘joined the table’ and had no new customers walk in. You said a large group was coming in but let me point out that the table in question was for 2 people and it was the only one free so I am not sure how that would have accommodated the large group. Seems like you were making stuff up to for some reason vent - maybe our behaviour was so offensive that you couldn’t hold back?

“ Maybe you did not like the way l addressed the situation and l am sorry for it but also it was a bit of a surprise for us for the tables being joined before any order was placed as it is us the management who usually takes care of that and not the customer.” - I don’t get what’s the surprise in us using an empty table to keep your glassware - when literally no one new came in or asked for a table. And you don’t know how much food we were planning to order. By the time, we pulled the table closer, we already looked at the menu and were ready to order. Again, neither you nor I shall ever find out, so be it. But to say you were surprised and as a response berate customers in front of other guests is not cool buddy.

“It doesn't matter if you have been in Canada for 12 or 200 years. We are just not used to this with our customers in general. That's all. “ - I only bring this up since you were kind enough to educate me on how we do things in Canada. Again thanks for the lesson.

Also I don’t understand how you expected us to stay after your rude behavior. There is a way to handle a problem or talk to a customer. You can make a bid deal and it will turn out the way it did or you can handle it more calmly next time. But hey I am no one to offer advice since we don’t know how things work in Canada. Again thanks for the lesson.

————————————————————————————- Owners behaviour wasn’t good. We left before we ordered anything.

The issue was we asked the server if I could get one more table since the tables were extremely small, place was empty and couple next to us were joining two tables. The owner came over and told us that in Canada we don’t do this, next time before joining you should ask first. Well we did ask and the server did not understand. And the owner berated us in front of everyone. I have been in Canada over 12 years my friend and never had anyone behaved this way in front of other customers. Very condescending behaviour and obnoxious to the extreme. Your food maybe great but your...

Koshimbir - a refreshing salad Grandma’s Special Curry - reminded me of a version of avial Chapati - very home made feel Ragda Patties - yummy chat Tomato Soup - so good, my daughter loved it Gulkand Panna Cotta lunch thali - comes with 4 curries, 1 salad, rice, roti and dessert. jackfruit biriyani - this was out of the world. Burger - crispy and delicious Bombay sandwich - we made this to go and ate it after about 8 hours and it was scrumptious Weekend Brunch Thali - pongal, sambhar, chutney, desset. I dont know how he gets such diverse food SO right Lentil idlis - they had shredded carrots and green beans. So thoughtful about making healthy food. Ragi dosa - this is not in the menu but the owner surprised us with it. SO good. Mango lassi - tasted even better than the dairy mango lassi. This was made with coconut milk yogurt that they make it themselves. I mean talk about the incredible amount of detail and care poured into creating it. Hibiscus & ginger drink - Chai - this came with the cutest sugar container on the side (see picture).

Overall, a...
