The food was good, definitely takes time for the soup dumplings to be prepared as they are made fresh so be sure to enjoy some appetizers while waiting.
Portions of the appetizers are small, which match the value of what they’re priced at.
The restaurant interior is fairly dated and the washrooms could definitely use some updating as it definitely does not look/smell sanitary at all.
The servers are not friendly or welcoming, one female server in particular. There was a young gentlemen trying hard to be efficient to make up for the lack of service from the other 2 ladies.
They serve pre-poured tap water - that tastes like metal mixed with chlorine…which sits by their cashier counter, until customers are seated then served that while they wait. One man went up to grab a second cup because he was done his first and wanted a refill but nobody came to refill it, so he helped himself and was yelled at by one of the lady servers telling him to put the 2nd cup back down and that she will refill his already used plastic cup with water from the metal jar. By then he had already touched the 2nd cup and walked half way back to his table already - it was really not necessary to make a scene of it, as well as probably not the most sanitary at all as well.
As decent as the dumplings are, the experience and sanitization of this type of environment is not worth it. I...
Read moreFirst time eating here. It was difficult to find a day where there wasn't a line all the way onto the sidewalk. However, friday at 5pm, there was hardly anybody. The service is very nice and we got to enjoy seats on the terrasse.
Spicy and sour soup: the soup was watery, not spicy and the bowl was as big as my small asian hands. Definitely not worth it for 4$.
Steamed dumplings: The lamb and cilantro was so good. The broth was flavorful, the lamb wasn't stinky. The dough has just enough chew and isn't too thick. Perfect dough to filling ratio.
Pan-fried dumplings: it's my first time trying pan-fried, and although there was a crunch from the fried dough-water, there wasn't much browning under the actual dumpling. Also the crunchy part stuck to my teeth a bit. Idk if that's normal. The pork and cabbage filling is very basic and tastes basic. Which is good, but I think I had higher expectation. I think I would have liked the pan-fried dumpling more if had I chosen another filling.
I would totally recommend this place for their steamed dumplings. Easily the best steamed dumplings I've had Montreal, especially for a very reasonable price. The ones at Qing Hua are too thick in dough, in my opinion. The other dishes are not worth it. The one at Mont-royal has muuuuch...
Read moreFrom their small and cute details on their cutlery to their fantastic, bursting full of flavour dumplings - Sammi was jam packed on a wednesday afternoon and for a reason.
We were there on a perfect day that had a little sunshine, a little nip in the air and that got into a little rain here and there and to have these nice little packets of goodness filled with soup that feels like a warm hug and sweet meat perfectly spiced with their soy and chives. Paired with their salty and tangy spicy chili oil took it to another level.
Every bite of their dumplings was as fresh and as wonderful as the first one. I always heard and saw about the soup dumplings and couldn't pass the decision to have it when I had the chance. And to have it at this great place was such a great decision.
Their menu was pretty concise and to the point. They had a few things and they did it really really well. We had pork, garlic and chives and the shrimp and chives soup dumplings. We also took the hot and sour soup that was hot and sour.
The service was fast and the dumplings were a bomb of a flavour and i would 10/10 recommend it to anyone who's visiting Montreal.
We left with a full belly and a warmed up inside feeling like a hundred hugs...
