So I’m sure many people will disagree with my ratings but here is why. Food Fries: frozen, pasty, covered in their seasoning which lacks salt and anything to wow you. I don’t like ketchup and had to use ketchup to add flavour and moisture and then realized this and stopped - waste of money period! Don’t sell inferior product and sell at home made pricing. Picketed beet: very good, crisp and fresh Pita: nicely warmed with zatar seasoning was good Green cabbage salad: with lean on, dill, cabbage and some sort of creamy substance - maybe mayonnaise (mit certain) and tahini not sure, was good Hummus spread topped with seasoning and olive oil, average and too smooth. Shawarma: a big let down. It’s as if they cooked the shawarma before, heated it up on a skillet with some oil to moisten it, then sprinkle shawarma seasoning all over it making it dry and over cooked. Not so good. Salad cuit (cooked tomatoes salad) was excellent. Kefta (middle eastern hamburger): not fully cooked, seasoning was so so and lacked moisture. As a non sauce person I found myself needed to dip in to ketchup to add flavour and moisture - and I don’t like ketchup. And they are really small burgers so it should be easy to cook it right. Overall I round that the value to not be so good. I just recently went to a middle eastern restaurant offering the same food, and it was plentiful so much so that two people could eat it and the quality was high and fresh as can be. Shawarma moist and juicy and not recooked and overdone with powder seasoning all over it. This is not (to me) the way it is in the Middle East, it’s their version. If you’re looking for true middle eastern in afraid this is (for the most part) not it. It’s not bad, and it’s not great, it’s just ok - but for the portion I feel pricing a little high. The staff are nice and knowledgeable and the interior is nothing fancy but clean and nice and people aren’t packed in so you have good personal space. Parking in the area is a real challenge and for me it’s not a place I would go a 3rd time. I did come here when they opened and thought the food was a little better or perhaps my memory escapes me. Nonetheless, À chacun ses...
Read moreMy fiancé and I went to this restaurant and were rudely greeted by the staff, while waiting for a table they served us drinks (that was about as good as the service for the rest of the night went) we waited an hour and a half while other customers who arrived after us were seated(same number of parties as us and there were empty tables). All while being told “oh we’ll have a seat shortly” we ordered right after being seated. I mean, we did have an hour and a half to read the menu LOL.
The food was barely edible, cold and tasted old and over cooked. The chicken I ordered was like eating a old dirty leather boot and the pita I had received might as well have just been charcoal at that point, the tzatziki sauce tasted expired and a little like rubbing alcohol (before you ask, Have you ever eaten food after hand sanitizer? Let me tell you, I have LOL horrible experience) and when I say expired I’m talking coming home drunk from the bar and seeing some milk in your fridge you’re not quite sure how old it is taking a sip and getting a chunk kind of expired. Needless to say, I was displeased completely. When we finally went to pay the bill, they were a disorganized mess weren’t sure what drinks we had, didn’t keep tabs. Super frustrating.
Summary; If you like good service and eating food that doesn’t taste like old leather and expired milk you find in your fridge at 3 am late one night from a bar. Don’t go here. You’re better off at a highschool cafeteria, at least the lunch lady is capable of keeping track of the food and drink items you get and the food is probably hotter and...
Read moreChicken Shawarma, Red Cabbage Salad, Matbucha, Hummus, Pita . Sumac is located on 3618 Notre-Dame St W and has been serving loyal customers since 2014. Very cozy and low key spot that is serving some great Middle Eastern food. . I love to take my friends here who have never before tried Middle Eastern food. It reminds me so much of the food that I would get when I would travel to Israel it feels like I'm their at times. . The dinning experience at Sumac is really quite nice. There is one long communal table that sites about 20+ people along with a number of tables along the walks giving you plenty of options. Personally when I'm their I love the communal table, let's you chat with new people and enjoy the good food amongst good conversations, hopefully 😅. . The name Sumac actually comes from a widely used spice all across the Middle East. It has a really dark red color and the smell of it is incredible. Love using it in dressing, spice rubs and even tossed with some fries to give them some great flavour. . The dish before you is the chicken shawarma which is nicely spiced and tender, a personal favourite of mine. It come with a choice of 2 salads, homemade pita and hummus and pickled turnips. Great thing is you can always mix and match your salads, try the kefta or falafel and even eat them in pitas. . One of my favourite spots for Middle Eastern food. Another great hotspot on Notre-Dame, the street that keeps...
