I’ve traveled all across China on my motorcycle—from Sichuan to Hunan to Guangzhou—and let me tell you, Bamboo Garden is by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. And I say that as someone who knows good Chinese food when they taste it. I asked the server for a recommendation and she gave me a snarl like I personally insulted her ancestors. I even tried to chat in Mandarin and English about China, hoping for some local insight—nope. Just rude energy.

The rice was stale, the portions were tiny, and for what it’s worth, I’d recommend 广东白切鸡 (Guangdong-style poached chicken) over anything on their menu… because at least in Guangdong, people know how to respect their ingredients.

And the atmosphere? Terrible. The service? Even worse. I had just been working all day on a roof with my construction crew, dusty, dirty, and tired, and yet somehow I was treated like the villain of the story. I mean, come on—your customer might be a little grimy, but that doesn’t give you the right to act like a Chengdu dragon breathing fire.

To anyone thinking about coming here: definitely do not. Save your stomach, your sanity, and your dignity. Bamboo Garden, you are a cautionary tale, not...

Step into the world of culinary bliss at Bamboo Garden, where every aspect of your dining experience exceeds expectations. From the warm and attentive service to the meticulously presented dishes, this restaurant is a true gem. The menu offers a delightful array of traditional and innovative Asian delicacies, bursting with harmonious flavors and creative twists. Vegetarian and vegan options abound, ensuring everyone feels catered for. One of the highlights of our meal was the flavorful and satisfying vegetable chow mein, featuring a medley of crisp vegetables stir-fried to perfection and tossed with tender noodles. The combination of textures and the aromatic blend of seasonings made this dish a true standout. The elegant décor, soothing ambiance, and impressive beverage selection further enhance the dining experience. Bamboo Garden is an absolute must-visit, offering impeccable service, a culinary journey through flavors and textures, and memories that will linger long...

So, we are from the Mainland and i guess may be jaded. This restaurant is the 5th one we have tried in or near nanaimo. The previous 4: we tossed the food. Not even worthy of the green bin. I like the location of this place. The owner/staff were fantastic. Super nice and helpful. The food was fresh, but I am curious as to why the flavour was quite bland. We decided to go basic for our first visit. Some dishes that normally you can't go wrong. Nothing exotic first visit. We had the sticky rice (my fav). Needs more filling. S/S pork with pineapple. (Basic. Not greasy at all). BBQ chow mein. (Bland, noodles all chopped up like you would serve to a child). Ginger beef. (Tasty but could kick it up a notch with more garlic and ginger). Sliced BBQ pork. (Very dry, but at least lean. Not a lot of flavour). Again, we are spoiled from East Van restaurants and Richmond night Market. We might go again, this time focus on dim sum. Looked...

The restaurant itself is in a nice location right downtown, close to where several buses go. Inside is small but quaint--there's photos of their menu items on one of the walls. Surprised by how much seating is in there, the place looks tiny from the outside! I went for take-out and ordered one of the dim sum combos with pork buns, shumai, and dumplings. Delicious food and I'll definitely be back in the future! While I waited for my order, the lady working front-of-house was just outstanding, she was attentive and friendly. Brought me a glass of water without me asking, told me how long until my food was ready, etc. Couldn't have asked for better service.

The best Chinese takeout I had in Nanaimo and prices are affordable too. I ordered combo #1 (Chicken chow mein, sweet & sour pork and a spring roll) $13.99 and the BBQ pork & shrimp fried rice for $15.99 The food was very good and was a cross between Western style meet authentic style. The food was perfectly cooked and the flavour good but better had they added diced green onions. The value for the food is excellent! The only negative is the location is on the fringe of downtown and next to a bad part of town. Parking also can be a bit tricky. The staff was very friendly and curious why I was snapping pictures of the restaurant lol.

We started tonight planning to go to a local supermarket that has popular Chinese take-out. But when we looked at what they had sitting under the heat lamps we decided we could do better. So! Bamboo Garden had good reviews and was a short drive away and we headed there. We're glad we did. The take out was ready quickly - veg chow mein, veg rice, black bean chicken, ginger tofu and veg chop suey - and was absolutely delicious. I would totally recommend it. It's so easy to support local restaurants when the food is this good.
