I’ve traveled all across China on my motorcycle—from Sichuan to Hunan to Guangzhou—and let me tell you, Bamboo Garden is by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. And I say that as someone who knows good Chinese food when they taste it. I asked the server for a recommendation and she gave me a snarl like I personally insulted her ancestors. I even tried to chat in Mandarin and English about China, hoping for some local insight—nope. Just rude energy.
The rice was stale, the portions were tiny, and for what it’s worth, I’d recommend 广东白切鸡 (Guangdong-style poached chicken) over anything on their menu… because at least in Guangdong, people know how to respect their ingredients.
And the atmosphere? Terrible. The service? Even worse. I had just been working all day on a roof with my construction crew, dusty, dirty, and tired, and yet somehow I was treated like the villain of the story. I mean, come on—your customer might be a little grimy, but that doesn’t give you the right to act like a Chengdu dragon breathing fire.
To anyone thinking about coming here: definitely do not. Save your stomach, your sanity, and your dignity. Bamboo Garden, you are a cautionary tale, not...

Read moreSo, we are from the Mainland and i guess may be jaded. This restaurant is the 5th one we have tried in or near nanaimo. The previous 4: we tossed the food. Not even worthy of the green bin. I like the location of this place. The owner/staff were fantastic. Super nice and helpful. The food was fresh, but I am curious as to why the flavour was quite bland. We decided to go basic for our first visit. Some dishes that normally you can't go wrong. Nothing exotic first visit. We had the sticky rice (my fav). Needs more filling. S/S pork with pineapple. (Basic. Not greasy at all). BBQ chow mein. (Bland, noodles all chopped up like you would serve to a child). Ginger beef. (Tasty but could kick it up a notch with more garlic and ginger). Sliced BBQ pork. (Very dry, but at least lean. Not a lot of flavour). Again, we are spoiled from East Van restaurants and Richmond night Market. We might go again, this time focus on dim sum. Looked...
