Unbelievable food, Unbeatable service.
4 big eaters left absolutely stuffed. We split the pork belly sliders, and a pecan pie with ice cream. Each person also ordered their own entree and drinks. Every facet of our experience at the Broken Hill was balanced and enjoyable. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The space is large and airy enough to have a private conversation, but doesn't pressure you to be overly quiet.
Not enough can be said about the food here. A caddy of 4 bbq/ hot sauces was brought to the table; each excellent in their own way. The brisket left nothing to be desired. A healthy portion of tender, tasty beef, smooth mashed potatoes, and an array of well matched sides and garnishes made for a filling meal. The pork sliders could easily have been a meal on their own (I would add a side). A nice crunch contrasted the rich, tender pork. And the locally sourced bun enveloped this tiny masterpiece perfectly. It's hard to believe the same chef making these well rounded main dishes could also have a flaky pie crust perfected, but there is no other way to describe the pecan pie. More nuts than one typically sees, and a crust that managed to be crunchy and fluffy without being too buttery, made this dessert a little less rich than expected. It was a welcome surprise after the hearty meal that preceded it.
Try Broken Hill, order as much variety as you can possibly stuff yourself with. You will absolutely not be...
Read moreThis review is mainly on how impressed I am by the way the owner turned a bad taste into a good one. On a Thursday night My daughter and I had gone for supper. Left after eating and felt like we were not provided with the service that my daughter was used to. However as you can see in the updates below the owner Chad explained the situation to me, and he is going above and beyond to satisfy us. This was an isolated incident and the manner in which Chad handled it has not only earned him my business back, but I hope that others reading this will treat themselves to a visit to the Broken Hill.
UPDATE Friday night: I am now 12 hours away and received a message that the restaurant had a problem with their fryer that night, and had refunded a bunch of customers, and not refunded a few of us. I’m attempting to get refunded.
UPDATE Saturday morning: Just had a very pleasant phone with the owner Chad and I am very impressed with his professionalism and commitment to excellent costumer service. Based on the phone call with Chad I have changed my review, because mistakes happen and the owner has gone above and beyond in fixing the situation. A refund is on its way. Also I will definitely return for another meal next time I am in Nelson.
Update : received full refund thank you Chad. Look forward to...
Read moreusually don’t leave reviews and honestly, I wasn’t planning to after our visit. The drink was bad, but I didn’t think it was that big of a deal until I saw the owner’s response to my boyfriend’s review.
We came in for drinks and I ordered a paralyzer. It came out completely curdled. I know it can be a tricky drink to make, but if I’m paying for something I appreciate it is made correctly. I said, “Hey, sorry, but this came out curdled,” and the server told me, “Yeah, it’s supposed to do that.” That’s just not true. I was told if I ordered another it would come the same or I could get something different. I declined a replacement and left it at that. The drink was taken off the bill, which I appreciated, but the interaction felt cold and dismissive, no apology, just attitude.
What really bothers me is was the owner’s public reply. Instead of handling the feedback professionally, he got defensive, minimized the situation, and called it a “nothing burger.” I looked at other reviews and responses and saw a pattern he regularly mocks customers, and does not acknowledge the experience.
A review isn’t an attack it’s just feedback based on someone’s experience. If the response to criticism is to insult the customer, it says a lot more about the business than the...
