Stopped in to have Sushi today even though they don’t use real Kikkoman soy sauce and their sushi not very authentic and the deep fried dishes are way to oily. I was hungry and so thought I’d just put up with that. I asked to be seated in a quiet area which I was. The waitress asked me to come let her know when I was ready to order. When I was I got up to find her. I was talking to the folks behind the counter and explaining that a waitress “over there” asked me to come find her when another incredibly loud and aggressive waitress stormed towards me yelling “this is a sit down restaurant” “we come to the table to take your order”! Her voice was loud and everyone in the restaurant was looking and I was trying to explain I was doing as I was asked! She yelled over me repeatedly telling me we come to the table to take orders! Yes I know how it works in restaurants at my age but the waitress who sat me ASKED me to find her!!! Unbelievably rude! I said I’ve already been sat. It was too much and I told her she was rude and I would be leaving! I’ve lived here 23 years NEVER been treated this poorly in a restaurant in Nelson in my life. I will NEVER return as now not only is their food (been to Japan) inferior this staff person was way over the top. A very upsetting and bizarre situation and this waitress should not be working with the public. She was erratic and...
Read moreI wanted to love Sushi Wood in Nelson, but after having been to sushi restaurants in Victoria, BC and Vancouver, BC, this is not the same quality of sushi, although, they are charging similar prices to Victoria and Vancouver.
We tried a variety of rolls, nagiri, and tempura, but noticed right away that some of the ingredients used are imitation rather than the real thing. The wasabi was not real wasabi, rather something that seemed to be a blended, off-the-shelf product and had no bite to it at all. One of our rolls also had imitation crab, but that (imitation crab versus real crab) was not indicated on the menu.
We also ordered a pitcher of beer, from the menu, and the first of our 3 waitresses we had during the dinner told us that a pitcher was on the menu, but they didn't actually have any pitchers to serve with. The wait staff didn't know what some of the components of the dishes were and had to keep asking - which might have been okay, except they all told us something different.
Despite some of the ingredients use, the food was actually tasty, except for the tempura which was completely bland. We decided we might come here again - maybe next year, after some of the opening pains of a new restaurant can be worked out, or we'll just save our sushi experience for Vancouver, where we know the price will match the quality...
Read moreI came here excited to try the place out, as my partner and I are sushi lovers, and I had heard rave reviews from some of my family members.... But was disappointed unfortunately. The atmosphere was great, its a pretty place to eat with lots of selection as to what you can order, BUT the 4 rolls my partner and I ordered all tasted the same. After ordering, we asked our waiter if we could keep our menus, as we usually order more rolls if we aren't full, but we told no, but if we asked again, that he would bring a menu back. When going to pay, my partner and I asked if we could split the cost, 50/50 but were told that that was also not possible, but we could choose which rolls we each wanted to pay for. However, a different waitress did offer to take a picture of us, which was nice. Overall, it was just okay, but below average in comparison to other local sushi spots. Maybe it was an off night, but I won't be coming back...
