This was our first time dinning at Gladstone commons. Our friends were seated at a separate table, so we were able to ask them their thoughts as well. First the positives, very cute and warm feeling restaurant. Our reservation was at 5:30pm and we were able to take advantage of the happy hour ($5 bar well drinks). We ordered the crispy duck wings to start. It was a little odd that they only served us 5 instead of 6 (pretty sure ducks have two wings each… lol) but they were absolutely delicious. They had a sweet/savoury tangy flavour and would definitely recommend. On to the mains, I ordered the wild boar porchetta and I don’t think I have had anything so flavourful. So much effort and thought was put into this dish. I highly recommend. My partner ordered the flat iron steak frites and unfortunately this was disappointing. I can confidently say that both his and my friend’s steak were both over done. She ordered it rare, but it came out medium rare. My partner ordered his medium, and it came out medium well to well done. Secondly, I absolutely agree with letting the meat speak for itself and not adding too much. Saying this, his steak was not seasoned at all. No salt, no pepper, very bland. I spoke with my friend and she had to ask for seasoning to add herself, as she felt the same way. The parsley puree had no busy being on the plate, it definitely did not add to the dish but took away. The best part of his dish was the French fries. We absolutely have no problem paying for expensive food, however we have a problem paying for poorly prepared expensive food. The service was overwhelmingly attentive. Please do not misunderstand, I loved our server. She herself took care of our table extremely well, we did not require any more help. Our dinner together was disrupted multiple time by different servers. I would take a sip of water and a minute later a server was there refilling my sip of water. Multiple servers coming to take away plates when we were not finished, hovering our table. I think it might be beneficial instead of trying to turn over tables, to allow people to enjoy the company they have and the restaurant atmosphere. I think we would come back for another try, however I’m on the fence about recommending it to...
Read moreWe came here on a Wednesday night as we were celebrating an anniversary. On Wednesdays they have a date night special for two which includes 2 starters, 2 mains and a dessert to share for $85 which is what we opted for. We chose the mushroom toast and terrine which was chicken liver on this day. WOW. The first bite of the mushroom toast blew my mind, I haven’t had a dish this good in a while, both of us loved this 10/10. The chicken liver terrine was delicious as well. If I had one thing to criticize it would be that the liver could’ve used a little more seasoning 9/10. For mains we had the spring linguine and bistro chicken. The chicken was cooked perfectly, the potatoes underneath were tender with a beautiful crust on the outside and topped with some bacon crumble that had a hint of sweetness. All this along with their green goddess dressing was a 9/10. The spring linguine was lackluster for me. They rotate the vegetables in this dish, I had spinach, asparagus and green beans. There was a pool of oil on the bottom, the sauce and goat cheese combo made the flavour very flat. Some salt or acid would’ve helped the dish come together. 5/10. We added on one of their specials for the day which was Gouda biscuits. $6 for 5 small biscuits with hot honey butter. Incredible, wish the butter had more heat 8/10. Then lastly the blueberry cobbler parfait… this was unfortunately the worst part of the whole meal. I love sweets. I expected some sort of ice cream in this parfait, instead it was “whip mascarpone” which tasted like fresh whipping cream, mixed with large chunks of meringue, and a hard, dry and crumbly “cobbler”. Unsure if the little blue sprinkles were just for the special occasion or part of the regular garnish for this dish but it was a little out of place. 2/10. The service here is great, our waitress was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable of all the dishes and specials available. Overall still a very enjoyable experience. I would definitely come back here just for the mushroom toast and bistro chicken again. I’m sure they have many other great items on the menu I am excited to try the next time...
Read moreThis is a restaurant our town needed. My husband and I travel for food and we aren't fans that Windsor doesn't have many upscale spots that TRY new dishes. We found the food that was offered to be fun and unique. The drinks are also phenomenal. The interior is beautiful too. My only concern was parking. There is a lot out back but when you book during prime dinner time parking is a bit of a challenge so keep that in mind!
We ordered the duck wings which honestly blew my mind. That was some of the best food I have ever tasted. I love duck and the sauces, the crunch, the nuts ontop - just STUNNING.
The octopus was also really good. It comes with sauce, sausage and potatoes. The potatoes brought us back to Spain. The dish was very flavourful and really good!
We then tried a special that wasn't on the menu. The pan seared on one side tuna. I found it a bit too spiced but my husband loved it. I enjoyed all of the additional pieces on the dish so I still ate my fair share of the dish.
For drinks I got a mojito which wasn't your traditional one but tasted just as good and maybe even better than the ones I have had in the past! My husband got the High Seven I believe it was called. Really into the drinks :)
We then ordered the wild bore. This tasted of my entire trip to Germany along with the dessert of the profiteroles. A bit heavy but we removed some of the cream cheese and it was lovely!
As we travel for food we were expecting a super large bill but when we got it we were impressed with pricing too. Considering this spot is courageous with new tastes and flavours we thought we'd be paying an arm and a leg! This is a MUST try spot. If you don't normally dine in more upscale spots then make this a spot to celebrate a special occasion! The menu does change so keep that in mind but we are excited to go back when the new menu is...
