Tonight, I went to the Mandarin Restaurant at Hyde Park. And I luckily got to enjoy the last day of their Moon Festival event.
It was a buffet, so I tried a little bit of everything. This included Shanghai noodles, roast beef with gravy, lots of sushi, ginger beef, plain soft noodles, General Tao chicken, lemon chicken, and clams. The two standouts of these were the sushi and roast beef. The sushi was made minutes before; and the roast beef tasted quite savoury, made even better by the gravy.
I gorged an a variety of sweets, including mini crème brûlées, a honey twist, a chocolate drizzled Rice Krispy Square, chocolate chip cookies, almond cookies, a sugar puff, and banana fudge ice cream. All were good except the Rice Krispy Square. It tasted and looked like the ones you buy at a grocery store. The highlight of desserts were the chocolate chip cookies. These were warm and buttery, but had the right amount of crunch.
Now, on to the atmosphere. When I walked inside, I immediately noticed the lush green plants and the pond with live fish. It is a clean and tidy environment. I sat down at my table at roughly 6:00 p.m., and it was very crowded. Mandarin is known for getting busy, so if you’re overwhelmed by large crowds or claustrophobic, this may not be the place for you. But the staff work incredibly hard and clean your table while you’re filling up your next plate. They also offer you warm, moist towels to clean your face and hands. The servers will gather everyone’s attention to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.
My bill came to $50, which is understandable given that you can eat until your heart is content.
There is a reason that Mandarin Restaurants are so popular. It’s important to them that they keep a flawless reputation, and they...
Read moreI haven't been to the Mandarin since mid 2019 due to COVID. The Mandarin is somewhere me and my family usually go for celebrating birthdays as there is always something for everyone. Today is mine and my husband's anniversary and we wanted to order some food in. We received a Mandarin menu in the mail last week, and thought let's try to get delivery and see what it is like and let me tell you it was a 10/10. The menu is understandably smaller than normal but there are still some great things to choose from. We ordered chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce, general tao chicken, honey garlic beef, plain soft noodles, vegetable fried rice, spring rolls and we ordered fortune cookies. All of this only came to $75. We ordered a bunch because we had no idea how big (or small) the portion sizes would be. The portion sizes were huge! We have enough food here to last us 3 days. Such a good experience - the food came 20 minutes earlier than expected, the lady on the phone was so polite and kind, and made sure to repeat our order back to us to make sure she got everything, delivery was free, and they even gave us free buttertarts and a free Mandarin tote bag. Also no need to order fortune cookies unless you want extra because they already come with the meal. The food arrived hot and SO DELICIOUS. This was a great way to end our anniversary celebration today, and I've already recommend to the rest of my family to order from here. A big thank you to the Mandarin for providing such great food and service. So happy we can still have one of our favorite restaurant meals for our celebrations even...
Read moreEDIT UPDATED. Had to DOWNGRADE my last positive review after my recent dine in experience (June 2024). Got seated at a makeshift table, food was mediocre, manager wasn’t customer friendly. Reserved two weeks prior for a table for 6 adults. We got seated at a makeshift folding plastic table with a table cloth placed on it (to hide it). The table was squeezed between two regular tables without adequate room to get in or out. You’d hit your knees on the table legs and was lower than the standard wooden tables. When we complained we were told by the annoyed manager that it would be a 20 minute wait for a regular table to open up and that we would need to go back and wait at the entrance with my elderly parents. Completely unacceptable! My wife was so upset after dealing with this that she left and went home. This experience ruined the evening and we all should have walked out. We reserved well in advance and are paying full price just like every other diner. No one should be stuck at a plastic overflow table (squeezing more people in so they can boost their profits). This isn’t some roadside food truck stand I’m dining at! FOOD WAS MEDIOCRE this time. The Mandarin has definitely gone downhill since previous visits. From now on I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere.
Old review: Ordered the family dinner for 6 plus dinner for 4 for a birthday party. Food was ready on time, hot and tasted great. Good value for money as well. Would definitely recommend (edit: no...
