I went in on Tuesday night for a social function and of course wanted to try their food. I was familiar with Mill St. through some of their alcoholic apple ciders, but they only had one on the menu in-restaurant compared to their online menu. A bit of a shame, but whatchagonnado?
Since the only cider on tap was one I'd had before, I decided to go for a Beer Flight to try out four of their various beers. More on that in a second.
Having looked at the online menu, I wanted to go for either the Elk Burger or the Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the elk burger won me over because as my server, Charlotte, explained, it really is elk meat, and not just a name they give the burger!
Delicious and juicy with a unique taste that tells you it isn't beef — but that isn't gamey or a bad aftertaste at all! — I'd definitely get it again. The fries reminded me of Swiss Chalet's fries, though they were smaller and drier, for lack of a better word. When I say drier, I mean that they weren't oily or bulging or anything like that. They weren't "dry" in the sense that they were super chewy, they were maybe just dried a teeny-tiny bit too much before frying. Still great fries! I enjoyed them a lot and only wish I had more! ;)
Given that they're a brewery, I imagine the beer to be the major draw, so let me talk about the flight I got. As you can see in the photo, and if you refer to the menu, you get four 5 oz samples of beer for a combined total of 20 oz.
Now, it's the same price as a large mug, but you get less overall, but if you're interested in trying out four of the beers they have on offer without having to get a full glass/mug/pitcher of a single kind, this is the way to go.
(The glasses are also super cute and I loved them!)
I tried the Portage, the Mango March, the Orange Citrus, and the Cobblestone Stout.
Mango March - 1/5 - I wouldn't bother. The mango taste is so faint it might as well have not been there. I realize it's a gimmick, and I wasn't exactly expecting a flavoured beer, but I would've liked some consistent flavour throughout. It had a wheat-y aftertaste that I really didn't care for.
Orange Citrus Wheat - 3/5 - Not bad by any stretch, but I couldn't any any orange or citrus. It was a fine beer, but there wasn't any taste of the gimmick, so I'd give this a pass, honestly.
Portage Cream Ale - 4/5 - It's a little basic all things considered, but it's light and easy to drink. Your beeriest beer of the four, but if you're there, you're better off getting the stout!
Cobbestone Stout - 5/5 - Absolutely DELICIOUS! I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone. I'm not super-experienced, but I've had a Guinness before, and this would be my preference. It isn't heavy, it's super smooth, and very tasty. Easy to drink and something different than your basic beers. If I go back, I'm definitely getting this.
Charlotte, my server, was excellent and a real sweetheart. I arrived about 30 minutes late to the function, but I was definitely taken care of when it came to food and drink and I was even able to ask her for recommendations when it came to the beer. If I remember right, she recommended the Orange Citrus.
The ambience is lovely, the food is really good, but certain things can be a tad pricey. I opted against dessert because I couldn't possibly justify spending $12 on the toffee pudding I'd wanted. The elk burger is $25, and worth it, I'd say, but save it for a special occasion.
Overall excellent, would recommend, but know going in that certain things are pricey for...
Read morefirst time visiting this, unique and historic restaurant and brew pub. It's gorgeous on the outside, with multiple patio outdoor set ups. Situated right by the water it's visually stunning. As we entered, the aesthetics of the pub were awesome. From the stonewalls to the huge beer brewing canisters and with all of the different sections and hidden nooks, it is super nice. Everything was unique, bright, spacious with excellent air, quality and fantastic management of music volume and people chatter. We attended at 4:45 PM and the place was busy reflecting its popularity. We were immediately seated, and within minutes our very friendly server approached our table to take our order. We explained that we had further plans and would be meeting up with other people and was wondering what the wait time would be on ordering different types of food from their menu. Within two minutes we had narrowed down what would work within our schedule and happily placed our order. Our server was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and most importantly, the information she provided us was absolutely accurate. We had our food within 12 minutes and it was absolutely delicious. I believe that with effective communication with your server, it will change the outcome of your entire experience here. The food portions were very generous, the prices were reasonable, and we all agreed that we will definitely be visiting this place multiple times down the road. I highly recommend to families, corporate events, friends going out, and also an excellent location for a date. There is ample parking, and as I mentioned at the beginning of my review, the location was visually stunning. Make for some time to take a walk around the grounds, read the historic plaques and articles, mounted here and there, and really soak in the historical ambience. It will add depth to your experience!! Highly...
Read moreThe waitor and beer were good. The food was fine (the poutine is embarrassing considering you're looking at Quebec but probably because it's a Toronto brewery). But the hostess ruined the experience.
We called a few days prior to ask if we should make a reservation and that we are hoping for the patio, gave our group size and time we would be there and told they don't do reservations for the patio but given our size and time coming, seating 6 people shouldn't be a problem. Perfect!
The day comes and we show up, inside and outside are not even half full but apparently a bunch of reservations are coming in so we can't sit inside and the patio, which we wanted, can't accommodate 6 people. Apparently they can't move tables so our only option is 2 tables. We go for it because there is nothing around here (warning if you decide to come here). But than they seat us at 2 tables not even near each other. We decide to just sit in a way that makes more sense since clearly these hostess have 0 idea how to be host. We end up asking our waiter if we can move tables and the guy was like yes "yes or course!" But honestly at that point for me the visit was ruined, it felt like we weren't welcomed.
By the time we left the patio still was over half empty and inside wasn't full with some clear tables we could have sat at. I get they don't know when we leave if reservations are coming in, but not trying to accommodate 6 people is crazy! I've never been somewhere that wouldn't try to accommodate people like this.
Definitely won't be back nor would I recommend this place. The hostess are the customers first impression of a place and the ones here are not it. Adding that there is nothing else around, it's...
