Probably eaten here four times now, which puts it in the top 10% of restaurants we've frequented since moving to Ottawa a year ago. You definitely want a reservation.
Most recently we visited with friends from out of town. Aside from the delay in the appearance of our server, close to 10 minutes before she finally took our drink order, they did well. As a six top we twice ordered more food after demolishing our original order and the next order came quickly and without incident.
They have a relatively small selection of specialty rolls which is disappointing to me but those that they do have are quite good. Another small complaint is with the size of the rolls, they are really small (girth) for what they cost. Lastly, I'm still not sure why sushi restaurants in Ottawa don't provide tables with a pencil and checklist for ordering. Every sushi restaurant I've been to in the States does this and it makes ordering in large groups so much easier. We made our own list using my phone and handed it to our server. It cuts down on time significantly.
Regardless, it's decent sushi. Best we've found in...
Read moreThis was hands down the most horrific sushi I've eaten in Ottawa. The Omakese sushi / nigiri option was served with 3 pieces of fish that were CLEARLY dried out/freezer burn. They couldn't be salvaged. The miso soup had near-rotten and curdled (thing it's called).
The 'specialty' roll - Red Dragon - two pieces tasted so horrific the rest was left for the trash. The 'tuna' on top impacted the rest of the somewhat salvageable shrimp tempura in the centre that it couldn't be eaten.
The staff in the kitchen were visible from the table EATING over others meals before they were served.
Seating and arrangement makes this place best served for takeout, but for whom that wants to eat so unpalatable things I am not sure.
We were greeted quickly, and orders taken in reasonable time frame. Quality check was done after idling for over 15 minutes before committing to eat out of hunger - it's edible - it's just not good.
If you want to try real sushi, order at Shinka. #notanad I tried this location in passing, and...
Read moreThis restaurant was great. They have a good location, making it easy to find parking. They have a patio (though we didn't get to sit on it, I definitely intend to come back and sit on it) and the decor inside is simple and traditional. The decor and general atmosphere was quite nice and relaxing, though it was a bit distracting to have people constantly coming in and out to pick up take out since it's such a small restaurant. But it wasn't bad enough to detract from our experience. The service was fantastic, attentive and pleasant. The food was good, I LOVED the agedashi tofu and the gyoza, but wasn't such a fan of the salmon battera (though I think that's just personal preference, as there was nothing wrong with it, but I don't have anything to compare it too). Bonus, they were decorated for Halloween and had a box of candy by the cash. This was an absolutely fantastic dining experience and I'd recommend it to anyone who...
