I was grateful to be able to attend the pre-opening event. Since my photos were already uploaded by Kenny, I will just comment more on the interior and food.
The space is nice and simply decorated with hand-drawn art of the streetscape on one wall and some Korean-themed decorations on the other. Tables are not too close to each other, a comfortable fit. It can fit about 30 people. The open kitchen is the back, and the ventilation didn't seem enough, so the back door had to be propped open, resulting in a chill indoors for some people seated nearby. I can't comment too much about the service. They explained the dishes when they were served, but didn't go beyond that.
We only tasted the lunch portion of the menu. The model is a Korean kitchen and bistro, a place where you can drop by with some friends to have a drink and eat some food. They offer some dishes that you can't find elsewhere in Ottawa. The presentation of the dishes was really nice (for the lunch sets at least).
The flavours were spot on and I particularly liked the condiments that came with it. The best dish was the fried chicken with creamy pasta, which is obvious since it is run by the same people from the popular Table 85. Other great choices include the bulgogi wraps with ssam and bibimbop with signature spicy sauce. It's a bit salty, but perfect with a beer or soju! My only main complaint is that the pork bone in the gamjatang could be a bit more tender.
The prices are not bad considering the area. I will be back to try out their...
Read moreWe enjoyed a great meal at this restaurant! We ordered the Spicy Dak Gang Jung (fried chicken) with side dishes as well as the Soy Dak Gang Jung with corn cheese. The chicken was freshly fried and tasty. The spicy chicken wasn't too spicy--I was able to eat it without a problem, and I don't have a high spice tolerance. The corn cheese was warm, sweet, and creamy, although in the end I thought it was a bit too rich when paired with the fried chicken. I preferred the side dishes, which included kimchi, salad, potatoes, and pickled cucumbers, as their sharper/spicier taste cut through the grease of the fried chicken well. Personally, I didn't think the fried chicken was the best I've ever tasted. It was definitely palatable, but both the spicy and soy chicken were coated with sauce, and I generally enjoy dry fried chicken more, so I found this chicken to be too saucy. This is likely just personal preference though.
Our server was super friendly and came to check on us often. The decor of the restaurant was unique and cozy. The portion sizes were very generous, and the price was quite reasonable for the food we got. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant!
Note that this restaurant does not have its own parking lot, although there is street parking close by. Also, while the Google Maps hours are right, and they do close at 10pm, we saw them turning new dine-in customers away after 8:30pm. Customers who were already inside the restaurant could eat until 10, and they were still doing...
Read moreMy husband and I went last night for the first time and I'm SO glad we did. All of the service staff we interacted with were super friendly and personable, and I really appreciated that they remained masked when we couldn't. Our waiter in particular was fantastic and made us feel very welcome. The restaurant was about the size we expected for a smaller storefront on Bank Street, but the tables were well-spaced and they filled up quickly and the ventilation and air conditioning made us feel quite comfortable despite the heat outdoors. I can definitely see why it's such a popular spot!
Our food was incredible; I ordered the soy dak gang jung and it was juicy and flavourful and crispy. I had to fight the urge to eat everything so I could take some home and save it for lunch because I wanted to prolong the experience! My husband, who has said he does not like fried chicken, asked for a bite of my dish - and then asked for a whole piece. He's certainly a convert. As for his meal, he was torn between ordering the bulgogi bibimbap and the bulgogi, but he ordered the latter. He loved everything he was served and plans to try everything else on the menu in the future. I cannot recommend Table SODAM highly enough and we plan to make it a part of our regular restaurant...
