Ahh Zak's, If you're looking for that 70's style diner you've found the place! The beauty of this place is you know what you're getting if you've ever been to one of these old school diners. I ordered the smoked salmon & eggs and asked for an alteration of scrambled eggs and we settled for an omelet on top with the hollandaise sauce. They give you a pretty decent portion and your meal comes with unlimited coffee/tea which is a godsend when you come in during the later 24hr schedule times and when hungover. The coffee is drip by the pot and is very reminiscent of home coffee or coffee from Bon's Off Broadway in Vancouver. The service was prompt and the food came soon after. Apparently they used to be open 24hrs 7 days a week which is crazy but I can imagine only helps solidify Zak's as a community staple. They are however open 24hrs on the weekends to help serve those hungry patrons at untimely hours or for those working those late shifts. I came one morning with my laptop to do some work and even though it was just me there was no problem with me taking a whole table as the restaurant wasn't busy. I had the pleasure of meeting Roger the manager and he was very nice, courteous to all my requests and patient with all my questions, thanks mate! In conclusion I'd say if you're in Ottawa and in need of some greasy hangover food or just want a late night bite during the weekends Zak's will be there waiting for you and I definitely recommend going!!!

This was truly a diner, the food fare was all iconic from what you expect. You got milkshakes, smoothies, wings, burgers, poutines, etc what this place does really well apart from friendly service is hold that classic vibe. Nothing too creative, standard food, milkshakes classic, and very large portions. We made the mistake of ordering a dish for each of us, it was like eating double portions for everyone except for our friends who knew the portions would be gigantic. At least, they had leftovers for the next day. Milkshakes were yummy, they had the not so standard classics like mint chocolate chip and mocha which were both equally delicious, but my bias goes to the mint chip. I got chicken wings that were actually just boneless chicken breast which I was a little sad and misled over. My wife got the nachos as we were tired of having burgers and we were going to have poutine in Montreal. Overall, best value for the not so picky eater, nothing too glamorous but I would go back just for the milkshakes. The interior just screams diner, neon coloured benches, enough screens for the children, those metal circular stools, all the nostalgic you could hope for in a diner.

My experience at Zak's Dinner in the ByWard Market, Ottawa, was nothing short of a disastrous disappointment. I, along with my friends, decided to give this place a shot August 13th night, a decision that we now deeply regret. Upon entering the restaurant, we had the unfortunate luck of arriving about an hour before the kitchen was set to close. Hoping to enjoy a decent meal, we placed our orders, fully aware of the time constraints. However, what followed was an excruciatingly agonizing wait of an entire hour for our food to be prepared. It's almost as if they were intentionally trying to test our patience, and when we asked simply how long would it take to get this order ready, the staff told us you always have the option to make it to go! When our food finally arrived, we were informed that they had run out of the sides I had ordered. I mean, seriously? We initially ordered soup and, in our hunger after such a long wait, reluctantly agreed to whatever was available. The audacity of the staff to label this as a "discount" when they weren't able to provide the complete meal we ordered is beyond comprehension. It's not a discount when you're denying customers what they paid for in the first place. Naturally, we inquired why this information wasn't conveyed earlier and why there weren't any alternatives offered. The shift manager/supervisor response was utterly appalling. The manager/supervisor shrugged off the situation, casually explaining that the kitchen staff had already clocked out and therefore, they were unable to prepare anything else. This level of unprofessionalism is nothing short of shameful. The lack of empathy, accountability, and basic customer service skills displayed by both the staff and the shift manager was truly disgraceful. Instead of attempting to salvage the situation, they chose to brush off their mistakes and show a complete disregard for our experience. It's almost as if they believed they could get away with anything. To add the icing on this awful cake, my girlfriend's tooth broke while attempting to bite into the rock-hard bun of the sandwich. This incident was not just the culmination of a string of unfortunate events; it was the embodiment of the complete and utter failure of Zak's Dinner to provide a satisfactory dining experience. I am genuinely sorry for the individuals who have to endure such a toxic work environment, managed by individuals who clearly have no understanding of customer service or responsibility. Zak's Dinner in the ByWard Market has managed to leave a lasting impression on us, albeit for all the wrong reasons. This experience will serve as a reminder of how a lack of respect, accountability, and consideration can utterly ruin what should have been a simple dining outing.

We were here the first time, got a table fast. People who arrived around 6pm had to wait a very long time. Too less seats and waiter to handle the amount of customers. After we decided what to eat the waitress said she would come fast in just a second to take our order. It took around 5-10 min until she came again. After our order we didn't get any free water. Actually we got the food before we got something to drink. We had to ask for the water again otherwise I think we wouldn't have gotten any. We didn't got any cutlery, after we already ate a lot of the Burgers we got asked if we need cutlery. But we didn't need it. After a while we also realized that they forgot the free coleslaw and pickle they offer with each burger. We had to ask for this included side-dish and it too again around 5 min or more to get it. And then she brought it and without cutlery, we didn't necessarily need cutlery for the Burger but now definitely for the coleslaw salad. In the end we didn't eat the salad anymore because it took too much time to wait for cutlery. When we got up to get the check it again took again several minutes to get the check and then again couldn't pay directly. In-between the waitress did several other things, went in and out to bring others take-away boxes, at this time she could also have brought out the receipt. Someone else came later out with the debit/credit card reading machine for payment. Food was ok, nothing special It's good that you can choose several free toppings like: raw or fried onions, relish, mushrooms, pickle and others.... All in all we were not happy with the visit On the card the especially write down and mention that we should first talk to them before talking to your "followers", I understand that but we mentioned all the problems to the waitress and it didn't improve. Maybe that is a single problem but we also got wrong food send to our table before, that's a very small issue not a big deal and totally fine with me. But aren't the tables with numbers and the food is all ordered with an ipad so every order should be match to each table. I understand that the food and restaurants business is having a shortage of people/waiters/waitresses but the handling of all issues today was not good.

One of "Good Lunch Restaurants in Byward Market Area" apparently on trip advisor. It was a little better than ok. In the pics below, we got waffles and eggs, french toast and eggs, and 2 zak's big breakfast meals for lunch. I already did some research and the blue plate dishes were supposed to be larger portions than the other ones. Pros: good food, good portions, open 24 hours, restaurant is quite big Cons: expensive, service was ok, could work on the cleanliness Waffles were not soft and a little hard, french toast was good and not oily, and zak's breakfast was basically what it looked like, a good meal with eggs, sausage, and toast. Coffee was normal, tea was normal, but orange juice was a little sour. There was one review about them not taking asian families as a priority, we were an asian family and were treated normally. Service was mediocre for a "white place". It was pretty busy at the time, so I'll let it pass, but our "server" never even once served us until we asked for more coffee and then for the bill. Our orders were taken by another server, and we were also given our food by yet another server. It had a little loud atmosphere in the restaurant (maybe 1/3 of normal asian restaurant talking loud levels), seats were ok for cleanliness, and had a nice "diner" feel to it. It is quite expensive for a meal since it is around $12-18/person just for eggs, toast, bacon....etc.

Located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, this exceptional diner offers a unique and captivating dining experience. The establishment cleverly incorporates authentic bus seating, creating an engaging and entertaining environment for children and adults alike. The culinary offerings at this diner are truly sublime, with the standout Zak Attack burger being a delectable masterpiece. Rich in flavor and expertly crafted, it is worth every penny. For those with a penchant for spice, the addition of their signature spicy mayo sauce adds a delightful kick to the already irresistible burger. The diner's exceptional service further elevates the dining experience. Christopher, one of the attentive staff members, exhibits impressive knowledge of the menu and provides friendly, helpful assistance. His presence is undoubtedly an asset to the owners and a testament to the diner's commitment to outstanding customer service. In summary, this downtown Ottawa diner delivers an unforgettable dining experience, combining a one-of-a-kind atmosphere with mouth-watering cuisine and top-notch service. It comes highly recommended for locals and visitors alike.
