Competition is brutal when it comes to the restaurant industry, even more fierce when its a popular menu like fried chicken. There are a lot of mediocre fried chicken places out there! So to nestle in with the rest is not always the best. What did I like at Popeyes? First the spicy chicken coating is good, not great (as in “spicy”) but in keeping everyone happy it was good, with some heat but could have been more (for my taste). Crunchy without being too greasy and the meat was juicy. In fact everything seemed to be cooked fresh to order; everyone waits a bit before their order is ready, which means it hasn’t been sitting and sweating on a rack, getting soggy or dry inside. They have understood the science of Fried Chicken, where timing is a key element to GOOD fried chicken. The onion rings were good too. Lacked some seasoning for me, but again in keeping the masses happy the large order was generous and crispy. I like to eat onion rings without sauce but in this case I was tempted to dip from time to time to get some extra flavour. Another plus was the Seasonal price for a family pack. $30 for 10 pcs and two large sides along with 5 biscuits; which by the way were deserving compliments: “spot on” - “crackin toast Grommit”! The price isn’t bad when compared to Popeye’s regular prices for combo meals, which is where I find myself reserving the stars for areas of improvement. The pricing system is centred around selling combo meals. Little is done or advertised to sell buckets of chicken, especially without a drink. I am not a soft drink fan, and can count on one hand how many times I actually get a soda/pop in a year. So I often see a menu like this as one whereby I am paying for something I do not want rather than the promo of getting a drink for free. We asked if there were any prices for Just chicken? The response was a friendly, Yes! But you’ll have to ask again since I don’t recall what the prices were for the options explained. I mentioned the onion rings as a good side dish, but I can’t say the same for the Mac and Cheese. I am always a bit nervous with M&C at restaurants so I asked for a sample after ordering our family meal. They complied and were actually quite generous by giving a free Small side of M&C - Kudos to keeping with Southern Louisiana Hospitality! 😄 But as a result I’m glad we did not order it as one of our paid side dishes. It was bland and tasted like boiled noodles with some velveeta cheese slices melted and stirred in, nothing more. Its possible that others like this dish, but I should have taken it to be a sign when I looked around; many who seemed to be regulars (or at least non-newbies) in the seating area were enjoying their meals, but nobody had the Mac and Cheese on their tray. Overall the food was good for the deal we happened to fall upon this time, and it was MUCH tastier and generous than the other BIG franchise starting with K and ending with FC and maybe on par or a good contender to the franCHise that rhymes with ‘urch’s; (which I have had good and bad experiences with). There are other smaller fried chicken Mom’s and Pop’s places in Vancouver that I go out of my way for, but Popeye’s doesn’t quite make that list for me. I am happy I tried it, and I won’t be disappointed if a group of friends say, let’s go! But I’m not sure if I’d come in for a regular priced...
Read moreI went there for a special that is on their promotions and was not able to get it. I was told that is hasn't come yet but has been advertised as it is back. I ordered a 5 piece chicken box and got 4 pieces and the chicken was very greasey, that was 17.99 just for the box of chicken where I onky got 4 pieces not 5 and then I got a side which was so small and soured as it was old and that was 3.99 and then I got 2 drinks which was 3.79 the food was so bad I will not go there again as I was ripped off big time as I paid over $30.00 for food that was old and my salad was a small not a large plus I never got a buscuit. I never felt so discussed in all my life... I could not eat the salad as it was old discolored and bad and even the pickles my guest had were not even fresh they were browning. I paid $30.00 for garbage where I only wanted the promo and could not get it as they claimed it was not on but the sign is on their front door advertising The Big Box for $6.00, plus it is advertised on television as well? Anyone who goes to this place as it has taken a dive since I was last their and make sure your food is fresh and you are getting the right amount of chicken and everything you orderd. These people will play stupid and they do not care about customer service. I was discussed and appalled at what I experienced. Will never be going back to this location ever again. I am a well known film producer and I never in my life ever experienced such awful food quality. Especially at a price where it should have cost half of what I paid. I could have gotten 3 large pizzas for the price I paid for the food I could not even eat. They were even oblivious to even speaking to me about the current promotion and lied about it to my face as thr promotion just started two days ago. Save your money and go elsewhere as this place has taken a big fall since the last time I was there. Everything in sides, veggies and everything are just put in the cooler over night even days and nothing is fresh as the colour and taste said it all as my coleslaw was souring and bad. It was disgusting and never ever will I be going back to this location. Count your pieces and make sure you are getting what you ordered if you choose to go to this place, and it is fresh as this food I received left a huge bad taste in my mouth all day and I never ate anything. Food is old and bad and tasted like it was sitting for days! Avoid this place and save your money as it is not worth the...
Read moreWe were super hungry and we decided to order a meal with this establishment. I placed an online order: Spicy Deluxe Chicken sandwich Combo, Dasani water, rice & beans, add on sauces
I was extremely perplexed to find out while eating that the sandwich lacks cheese and tomato. I reported this to the cashier/ order taker. Strangely I was informed that they: are out of tomatoes and that “they never add cheese in any of their sandwiches.”
I was taken aback, as to why an establishment would blatantly and boldly market something which they don’t offer, especially when a franchise is expected to follow the ‘recipe’ down to the E.
As a customer, I’d have genuinely appreciated if I was informed and asked for an alternative — which didn’t quite happen. In fact, after expressing disappointment — there was no effort to offer an alternative choice of food or a refund.
In retrospect, I find it quite interesting when a franchise establishment chooses to bypass adding a cheese/ and-or a tomato? (Read optimize the cost) — now presuming they sell a 1000 units/ day, that’s a significant unethical cost saving in terms of cost of cheese, at the cost of a customers trust)
On a different note, my original online order had sauces, however I was told that we don’t offer sauces as a part of the order. After reporting that my order includes it, they quickly Obliged. Stellar Negligence.
Taste: 0/5
Here’s why:
Having tried Popeye’s burgers in their original outlet in New Orleans, Louisiana - I was pretty disappointed with their quality of the filet, fries, and the bun.
Notice the bun quality in the marketing - menu pictures and the actual pic. Quite appaling! The bun looks dead.
The filet was salty & a piece of oily disgust.
Well, I wouldn’t recommend wasting your $ here, as there are far better burgers + fries + meal offerings in &...
