A&W Canada — Restaurant in Portage la Prairie

Was here on December 23, 2021 around dinner time. Order 3 burgers and upgraded to poutines, there were multiple problems right from the start, I asked about getting a gift card, the server had to phone the manager, I waited and waited for them to tell me that they don’t have the gift card offer. Then they finally took my order, wanted the $7.99 Pappa burger and Onion ring combo, was informed they don’t have onion rings, so I asked if they could substitute for poutine, they said yes. Paid the bill and was overcharged. I just left it and paid, waited for food, they made poutines, left them sitting on a tray on the counter waiting for the 3rd poutine and burgers. Had to ask if I could get the poutines first, got them and they were cold, the fries were cold, the gravy was like warm, the cheese did not melt. Took it back up and ask if they could warm it up, was told that is the way we serve it, major attitude from all the staff. Nothing we could do about it, gave me 1 gravy in a bowl and said pour it over top of the cold poutine and maybe it will melt the cheese. Wow, the responses from the staff were rude, obnoxious and don’t care attitude. I got so fed up that I just told them to refund me and left. That was the worse service ever, the attitude they conveyed was very inconsiderate, looking at you over their half cover face mask. Don’t ever go there….

I have heard from the owner Josh, he was very sincere and will take measures to rectify the situation. Retraining his staff to ensure this will not happen again with other customers. ...

The staff was very RUDE. My dad ordered a milk shake and got half a smoothie. My sister ordered a milk shake hers was also half full. My brother in law ordered a milk shake and got a smoothie but his was half full. My dad questioned as to why it was half full, the staff told him that was a regular amont at half full and questioned why he got a smoothie and not a milkshake, they told him a smoothie and a milk shake are the same. My sister order her kids meals, she wanted the apples with the meals was first told apples do not come with the meal, when she asked why it was on the menu she was told they only have 1 bag of apples. My dad had asked for a side of mayo with his order, he noticed once he was sitting that they never gave it to him. He went to get up to ask for it and the chair tipped back causing him to fall backwards and he hit his on the garage can. The staff and other customers stopped to look when they heard the noise. NOT ONE staff came over to ask if he was okay. He ended up walking out of the restaurant hurt. My mom went up to the counter get a bag and mayo and comment to the staff that he had fallen and was hurt, and it was pretty rude that nobody came to see if he was okay. The staffs reply was "Oh". My parents also had to change up their orders a couple times because everything they ordered was out of stock.

Avoid this restaurant. The service here is nonexistent. Attention to detail when taking orders is atrocious. Even completing an order is beyond the abilities of the staff.

If an order for four people is made, you would think all four meals would be completed together – but no, we had to wait 15 minutes between menu items. Every single drink order was wrong, and in the end, we did not get served a coffee, which we paid for. The food came out cold, and the hasbrowns were not fresh. Staff ignored us when we inquired as to why our food was late. At least three drive-thru orders and 4 dine in orders were completed while we were waiting.

When I tried complaining to A&W Canada, I was told that I had had to talk to the store manager. However, management is clearly incompetent, as evidenced by the staff, and complaints are of no consequence. This is the same management that refuses to honor gift cards.

When making a decision as to where you should eat in Portage la Prairie, avoid A&W. Don't even darken their door. You would be better off starving than giving them...
