I had never been to Mr. Mike’s before. Based on my recent experience, I won’t be returning. There are lots of great restaurants in Regina. Unfortunately, Mr. Mike’s isn’t among them. Why?
Poor quality control Disappointing service
To start, upon walking in and letting the hostess know we had a reservation, she asked if we “minded being seated beside other people.” Unsure what she meant, I asked her where she planned to seat us and she led us to a table directly next to another table. As the dividing wall between tables was low (with no extra screen/barrier), there wasn’t much conversation privacy. It was busy that evening, so we decided to go with the flow and not worry about it. The hostess said she didn’t want to seat us there. Other people may have complained about the lack of privacy in the past. I mention this because it was kind of an odd and negative way to start the evening.
I ordered a mojito and my date ordered a Caesar. The drinks were watered down and not made well. I don’t have much else to say about the drinks, except that if you have (at any point) received a poorly made cocktail, you’ll know what I mean.
I ordered chicken and my date ordered steak. The waitress confirmed my date wanted his steak done medium rare. As this place is a steakhouse, we assumed the food would be better than the drinks and went on with our evening. We were wrong.
After waiting about 25-30 minutes, we received our meals. My chicken was dry, tough and topped with a few merciful pieces of tiny scallops and shrimp. The vegetables accompanying it were not much better - overcooked/boiled limp remnants of carrot and broccoli that seemed slightly above the level and presentation of prison food. I tried to eat it anyway, hoping maybe it wasn’t as bad as I initially thought…but it was. My meal was memorable in how bland it was.
My date did not fare much better with his meal. He received the same sad, overcooked vegetables I did. But the worst was yet to come. The outside of my date’s steak was charred and burnt. He tried to cut into the steak. The hockey puck-like vestige was tough, refusing to yield to the steak knife’s blade. I’m pretty sure the kitchen may have played a couple games of actual hockey using that piece of steak instead of a puck. We tried to brush it off. Mistakes happen. We understood a lot of cooks/staff work very hard and there was no point getting angry if the issue could be remedied. As the steak was the main part of his meal, AND pricy, I understood my date’s decision to ask for a new one. If a “steakhouse” can’t cook steak though, it’s not a good sign.
We waited for our waitress to return and check on our table. 20 minutes went by and she didn’t come back. Eventually, my date managed to flag a different waitress down, politely explain the issue, and request a new steak. Problem solved - or so we thought.
Nope. Another 20-30 minutes went by and no one returned with the replacement steak. Our waitress was nowhere to be found. By the time she finally appeared, we asked about the steak and she said she would check with the kitchen. More time passed before she returned, only to explain the steak may have been picked up by someone else. We explained we had somewhere to be and could not wait another 20-30 minutes for another steak. The waitress offered to get my date a steak “to go” - which we couidn‘t and shouldn’t have to do if the service and food was acceptable.
Eventually, the waitress agreed to talk to management about getting my date’s meal removed from the bill. Although they comped my date’s meal, I paid for mine. I guarantee you the drink and dry, flavourless chicken I had that evening was not worth the $50 price (including tip) AT ALL.
This was a disappointing experience. Despite trying to make the best of the situation, the poor service and food put a damper on an otherwise great evening. I hope Mr. Mikes management will use this feedback to improve the quality of their...
Read moreOn November 27th, 2024 we drove an hour to get to Mr. Mike's Steakhouse to celebrate a 25th anniversary. I've enjoyed the ribeye several times at this establishment, so I recommended it to my fiancé. When the meal came out, my steak was prepared medium, exactly as I ask for. I could actually tear the steak into three seperate pieces without even using utensils! As my fiancé began to cut into her ribeye, we were both shocked at how fatty her steak was. I am not talking fat in the marbling of the steak, it was fat wrapped up in more fat. We at first didn't want to complain, until 2/3 of the steak was unrolled like cinnamon roll! The manager looked at the steak, then he looked straight into my eyes, and he said it's probably the cut. I politely told him that it's a ribeye, and I will not tolerate being lied to. The manager insisted my fiancé have another steak like there was no other options. The manger said three times he would "fast track" the steak, meaning it will be cooked extremely fast with a quick presentation. My gal told the manager she will have the strip loin instead of the questional ribeye. By the time her steak was finally done, we just wanted to go home. We received the bill, not a reduced bill, not a free steak, no dessert, and NO apology! My fiancé paid the bill and tipped 18% based on that bill. When I glanced at the bill, I couldn't believe the manager tried to charge us for two ribeye steaks, especially since we caught him using MEAT GLUE!!! I told the manager that we should have been charged for one strip loin, about $10.00 less and we want a new bill, Please! The waitress came back, tossed $12 dollars on the table, and told me, the manager said that this would cover the mistake. The waitress wasn't polite about all of this. I guess after Samantha gets her tip, she can come back to our table and treat us disrespectfully. Try getting Samantha's attention when there is nobody in the restaurant, and yet all her time was spent with a single guy a the table across from us! I also thought it was extremely rude not to give me a new bill when I specifically asked for new one. Before I left, I let the manager know that I would be giving a very honest review. The manager couldn't care less about how he treated us! Gee, I wonder why the restaurant was almost completely dead!
STOP SERVING MEAT GLUE! Don't serve fat, meat glued into a fake ribeye! Don't charge for food we didn't pay for. Teach your staff manners after the manager takes manner lessons first.
Maybe Mr. Mike's Steakhouse can afford to lose me as a customer, as we only spend $1500 yearly there. BUT when 10,000 people read my review, can Mr. Mike's Steakhouse afford to lose $15 million dollars!?
ENJOY YOUR MEAT...
Read moreMy husband and I were looking for a place to become regulars at as we often work long hours. We drive by the Mr. Mike's grassland location almost everyday so we decided to give it a try. We ordered 2 steak and shrimp dinners for take out. The atmosphere and service was ok. I ended up by finding someone when I arrived as I waited for several minutes and didn't see one server. I have never been more disappointed in a meal especially for a restaurant that has the word steakhouse in its name. Everything was absolutely doused in a coursely of ground black pepper much like Montreal steak spice. Both steaks were dry, tasteless and very very tough. We ordered med rare and medium steaks. The vegetables were absolutely rock hard with burnt sear marks on them. I opted for the Caesar salad as a side and was flabbergasted when I opened the container because it was a spring mix lettuce mix, no romaine, no croutons, no parmesan cheese, but it did have a side of Caesar dressing. My husband had fries and gravy for his side. The gravy tasted so synthetic. It was as if someone opened a box of Campbell's vegetable soup broth and heated it up and added a cornstarch slurry to it to try and make it pass as gravy. The only thing good in both of our meals was the shrimp. The rest was horrible . We spent 100 dollars on this meal as it was a special occasion for us. I contacted the manager via email and never even got so much as a response from him. Very disappointed not only are we out 100 dollars but it's clear that the manager doesn't care either. This place will not become our...
