Somewhat disappointing. Haven't been here in a while. For takeout, we ordered 3 Pit Boss specials, half pound of pulled pork, order of farmer's sausage, and order of fried pickles.

The Farmer's sausage and pickles were delicious. Great portion of sausage, and although the pickles are an order of 4, our box contained 6 pieces (maybe due to a few of the pickles being small).

As another reviewer mentioned, the Pit Boss special seems to have changed. There doesn't seem to be defined layers where you'd have changes in texture. Instead, the cornbread had absorbed all of the beans, so (where previous), the cornbread would be dense and crunchy, with beans on top adding some sweet softness... Now you have a base layer of soggy cornbread and a few beans. On top of that is finely chopped brisket which seemed to be more fat than meat, and then a solid layer of BBQ sauce, sour cream and green onions. This was takeout so I gave the benefit of the doubt that beans would soak in to cornbread during drive, but it was literal slop. Perhaps the cornbread is cut/broken up too finely, or perhaps the baked beans layer is more sauce than beans? Was tough to distinguish the chopped brisket amongst all the bean sauce/bbq sauce/sour cream. Not great value for the price.

Finally, the 1/2lb (8oz) side of $11.50 pulled pork was over 25% fat and skin. At first I thought the bite I had was cooled down, rendered fat, but after looking further into the original container, I pulled out 2oz (of an 8oz portion) of skin. Generally this silver skin material is either (very thinly) chopped up and mixed in, or simply discarded (pre or post cook). I understand pulled pork has a higher fat content but the way this skin was served/sold in such large pieces was enough to turn us away from the rest of the meal.

As mentioned, a portion of our meal was delicious, but the inconsistencies in quality and lack of value in the Pit Boss and pulled pork means we probably won't travel back any time soon.

Side note: during pickup, the service from gentleman (owner?) was outstanding, and some of the sandwiches being delivered to folks dining in looked absolutely delicious!

Edit: Good on Smokin Okies for replying and taking ownership of the criticism, being objective and (possibly) suggesting change to fix future orders. No need to make things right for us. Your willingness to reflect and prompt change on future orders is good...

Ate at smokin okies for the first and last time today. Went in because it was the only place in the area that wasn't busy at lunch time. Probably should have been out first clue as to the experience we were in for. Spent $33 and change and received two plain hamburgers, one side of fries, one side of gravy, and two iced teas. The burgers were dry, overcooked 4oz patties with no seasoning. The side of fries was maybe 5oz and were overseasoned with lawry seasoning salt that had definitely been frozen and came from a bag. They tasted like they had been reheated from a previous order. The only good things I can say about the food is that the bun was fresh and my wife liked the iced tea. I don't mind paying more money for quality food, which is why even though we saw the prices we thought it must be good at that price. With the high prices and the poor quality of food, this place is just trying to keep their doors open. All in all, I feel gouged that I left a bbq house after spending almost $35 hungry. I'm sure the management could care less about this review. Just hope it saves another couple a disappointing and...

Updating my review again. Quality has dropped immensely. I went in and got one of my favourites...the Pit Boss. Before l, you could see the distinct layers and the cornbread looked like cornbread. Now, I have a feeling it's prepared in one pan because the cornbread is brown mushy goop and it's disgusting as hell. I got some brisket....dry as the Sahara Desert. But it was wrapped in plastic and Chef Mike did the cooking...it wasn't fresh at all The farmers sausage was passable. Portions have dropped as well. Gone was the cooler with bottled pop and I didn't see any options for beer anymore. Good thing COVID took out Jack Keaton's or else this place would have been abandoned years ago. But, there's better BBQ places open and opening. Don't think this place will be around much longer. I have a feeling there's a new owner...but current staff have no clue what BBQ is about.

Sorry to say...but either hit Pizza Hut in the same parking lot or 5 Guys next door....or 711...

I'm a big fan of smoked meat and an even bigger fan of a good mac & cheese. Here, you get both. Tonight my husband and I got the platter for two, it came with smoked brisket, ribs, and pulled pork; with it, you recieve 4 sides, of which we chose fries, mac & cheese, baked beans and coleslaw. When I tell you to grab the sweet & tangy BBQ sauce for your table, I mean it! It's amazing. The mac & cheese had that crumb crumble and was so ooey gooey delicious, but the baked beans stole the show when it came to the sides. I wouldn't waste your time on the coleslaw or the fries. Just swap that for cornbread. Nostalgic vibes, with centuries of photographs and memorabilia that are significant to the owners, and it makes waiting for your meal more interesting. It was our third time here, and we will always come back when we're in the city. Thanks for another great experience.
