Tried Hoja during their soft opening, and while I appreciate the ambition to bring Taiwanese 熱炒 culture to Toronto, the execution just isn’t there yet.
The braised pork on rice 滷肉飯 was the biggest letdown. Overly soggy rice with a watery, bland 滷汁 that completely misses the heart of this beloved dish. The wonton in chili oil 紅油炒手 lacked depth and reminded me of something pre-packaged from T&T. Taiwanese 泡菜 was underwhelming too, not sour or sweet enough, and the cabbage was limp instead of crisp.
We also waited 30 minutes for our final dish (deep-fried intestines with green onions) despite the restaurant being only 30% full. 熱炒 is meant to be fast and flavourful, and unfortunately, that vibe didn’t come through.
Didn’t try the lamb hot pot, and probably won’t return for it. Their other location, Hoja Mi-sua, was a hit, but this new concept still needs some fine-tuning to reach the same standard. Hope things improve after the soft...
Read moreWe come to this restaurant after we saw a poster in another Hoja restaurant in FMP! The restaurant is located in Time Square. We come at the time of very late lunch! We ordered two lunch specials, one is the lunch Beto and the other is the Satay Lamp hot pot serving with rice noodle. The lunch beto can change the main dishes. The mushroom main dish has a lot of ginger and garlic. It is very tasty. The deep fried pork chop (on the house due to mix up) is also very crispy and tasty. The side dishes, such as salad and the rice cake are nicely displayed and tasty. The Satay Lamp hot pot has rich satay soup base. We wish to have more rice noodles. The desserts (also on the house) are ice bar with red beans or green beans. They are typical Taiwanese local dessert. We really like them. All dishes are authentic Taiwanese dishes and the service is attentive and excellent. We will come back for other Taiwanese...
Read moreI've been to the HOJA at First Markham Place and expected it to be the same fare, surprisingly it is NOT!
This newly opened HOJA serves stir fry and clay hotpot but it is still some taiwanese goodness.
The clay pots are pretty pricey so my couple friends decided to just order a bunch of stir fry sizzling pot dishes instead and share with some rice.
This actually turned out to be an awesome choice. The pepper chicken is awesome and super crunchy. The deep fried intestine with onion was also really good. As was the traditional taiwanese popcorn chicken
The location has very low ceilings and decorated by bare walls, this unfortunately results in an extremely echoey and loud atmosphere. If you get headaches easily I do not recommend coming here.
Overall it is very clean and nice. Price is reasonable, worked out to about $25 per person all in, including tips. Parking...
