We dined at Jatujak Thai Restaurant, and I must say—it was positively enchanting. From the moment we entered, I felt as though I’d been embraced by Southeast Asia herself and then gently set down into a tufted booth with a cold drink and a purpose.
The shrimp cold rolls were divine. Light, crisp, and impossibly fresh. I felt like I was eating something that had never known pain or taxes. Simply lovely.
And then—then—they brought us the mango salad. I… I don’t even know how to describe it. It was beautiful. Colorful, bright, and layered with flavor like a Sondheim ballad. The mango was so fresh, I almost asked if it had a passport.
But then came the chicken satay, and I must admit… sigh… a bit dry. Not tragic, just… a touch disappointing, like a low note in a Streisand song. But the peanut sauce, thank God, came in like a tenor to rescue the soprano. Brava.
Now… Tom Kha soup. My God. My sweet, sweet coconut miracle. I clutched my spoon like it was the last branch on a tree in a flood. The balance of lime, mushroom, and cream—it sang to me.
The papaya salad was vibrant, crunchy, and alive—but not quite the spicy slap I had braced for. More of a polite tingle, really. Still, very enjoyable. Very… inviting.
We had the beef in red curry, which was delicious. Tender, warm, romantic. Like something one might serve at a small wedding in Chiang Mai.
Pad Thai? Oh, darling, the noodles were like silk pajamas. Everything harmonized beautifully—the shrimp, the tofu, the egg. And once again, those marvelous peanuts! What are they doing to them back there? Toasting them over sacred fire?
Then… then came the mango sticky rice. I wanted to love it, I truly did. But the mango… was not the same as before. Less bright, more… reserved. And the rice, while so vibrant in color, simply didn’t seduce me. I felt rejected. Hurt. But I soldiered on.
The staff? Angels. Quick, kind, attentive—I felt seen. I felt safe. I felt heard, which, as you know, I rarely do unless I’m performing.
In conclusion: Go to Jatujak. Bring your taste buds, your emotions, and perhaps a fan to clutch. It’s a culinary cabaret. And I’ll be back—with a vengeance and a...
Read moreI was so disappointed with staff responses and the food that I ordered. Last night we went to jatujak(richmondhill) and I ordered chicken pad Thai. Note that this is not the first time I ordered pad Thai in this restaurant. There’s a time I ordered it almost every week and I don’t have any problem with it coz it’s not spicy and my 2 year old son loves it. As I was feeding my son he keeps on spitting the food that I was giving him and I was so frustrated coz I know he was hungry and the fact that he loves the pad Thai. I ended up giving up and saying to myself I will just get him another food outside coz we are also in hurry because we are given only 1 hour table time to eat. So I started eating and to my surprised the pad Thai that my son and I ate was spicy! I ended up not eating it and not enjoy at all! When I call the attention of the male staff and told him that my pad Thai was spicy he said we don’t make pad Thai spicy and I told him I know because this is not the first time I ate here and even ordered takeaways all the time here. He did not even say anything to compensate to us. And when I told lady staff who was the one serving us she told me we made pad Thai a little bit spicy which made me so furious. I don’t want to have little argument with this staffs in-front of my son and our friends. These things I cannot accept because number one in their menu the food that I ordered was not labeled spicy and I was so confident feeding my son and not even checking what’s wrong. #2 instead of being apologetic it make it worst was both of the staff doesn’t have a knowledge on what the food they are serving! Instead their reasoning is completely opposite with each other!#3 mostly of the restaurant when you say things about their food in polite manner they will compensate something for you especially they knew you have a child with you who was hungry!! But instead they act like they don’t care at all and I am very disappointed of...
Read moreWe were so excited to have Jatujak open up in our new neighborhood in Richmond Hill. We were frequent customers of the location in Scarborough (Middlefield and steeles), when we lived in markham, so we were looking forward to trying the new location out. It was also our last dinner with our daughter before she moved back to NYC.
Sadly we didn’t get the chance to try it. We arrived and waited for c. 15 min and staff barely acknowledged us. They looked busy and were cleaning up a large table, so didn’t think anything of it. There was only 3 of us and there was lots of seats at the tables the staff just cleaned, so thought they were preparing the table to seat us. While we were waiting, a bigger group arrived (with no reservation, like us). To our surprise, instead of seating us, the host came to us and said they didn’t have a table for us and would need to wait another 15min! We were already there for 15min previously waiting patiently. The sad thing is that their intention was to seat the larger group that arrived after us. Very disappointing experience and the sad thing is that once we find a place we like, we’re loyal customers and refer places to our networks.
The positive thing that came out of this experience is that it forced us to search for another Thai restaurant in Richmond Hill and found Isaan Der Thai Kitchen & Bar. Our experience was the complete opposite there. Acknowledged right when we entered, seated right away and the food was so delicious.
With every bad experience, there is a good one that can...
