If you live in Vancouver, you must have heard of No.9 Restaurant, which is a famous and iconic Hong Kong cafe opening 24/7 in Richmond. We arrived Vancouver at 3am and drove straight to No.9 to satisfy our late night HK food cravings. Their menu is a thick chunky booklet and I was impressed by the insane variety of food they serve. No wonder it has been a neighborhood favorite for over two decades. I don’t really eat at late night, so I only had half of the sandwich and a few sips of the milk tea. The corned beef egg sandwich (鹹牛肉蛋治) is the best I’ve had in North America, comparable to those in Hong Kong. The bread was lightly toasted, and the scrambled egg was so fluffy and loaded with corned beef. HK style milk tea (港式奶茶) was rich and creamy. It came with a big glass so it justified the price. I was also craving for something hot and homey at midnight. I got the ginger steamed milk (薑汁燉雙皮奶), hoping it could recall the taste of my favorite cha chan tang (Australian Dairy Company) in HK. The texture was apparently not super silky and smooth, but good enough to cure my homesick.

No.9 restaurant 5300 No. 3 Road, #812, Richmond, BC V6X 2X9 I opted for a late-night meal at this location, primarily due to its 24/7 operating hours. Food: Pepper Salt Fried Squid: A standout dish and one I highly recommend. The squid arrived hot, with a crisp exterior and well-balanced seasoning. The flavors were satisfying and memorable. 9/10 Century Egg and Shredded Salty Pork Congee: Among the extensive congee offerings, I chose this variety. The congee was creamy and well-seasoned, with a generous amount of ingredients packed into a small bowl. The portion size was ideal for a light bite without being overly filling. 8/10 Ambiance: The seating was reasonably comfortable, though unremarkable. While the establishment was clean, there was an unpleasant odor lingering in the vicinity, which detracted from the overall experience. The source of the smell was unclear, but it did impact the ambiance. 5/10 Service: The service was adequate, meeting expectations but offering nothing exceptional. It aligned with what one might anticipate from an establishment of this nature. 5/10 Pricing: The pricing structure is mixed. While the congee was reasonably priced, the main dishes were slightly on the higher side. However, portion sizes were fair given the cost. Drink: Iced Almond Milk: The drink menu offers a wide selection, but I opted for the iced almond milk. It was refreshing and enjoyable. 7/10 Verdict: I would consider returning, primarily due to the convenience of the 24/7 hours and the availability of parking. The extensive menu also offers plenty of options for future visits.

This is absolutely the most corrupt and messed up restaurant I have ever been too. First off their was an ant in my friends food (as shown in the photo). I called the manager and he said "Haha hey watch this" and grabbed my fork to pick the ant out of my friends noodles.. I wasn't impressed obviously, and he said I can either eat it or he'll get rid of it and take it off our bill. Anyways, for some reason he put a $10 service charge on my bill? I told him this was the worst restaurant I've ever been to, and that he has no idea what he's doing as a manager. Once he got embarrassed by this, he then yelled at me and called me "a stupid idiot" instead of deescalating the situation. At this point the whole restaurant was silent and everyone started to look. Two gangsters swarmed me with punches and threatened to kill me for apparently disrespecting the manager. I proceeded to call the cops as I was being threatened and as I walked out to the front of the restaurant the manager pushed me against the wall and started to choke me with his two hands. The cops eventually arrested the manager but couldn't find the two guys as they escaped through the back of the restaurant. Twenty minutes later the manager was released as there wasn't sufficient proof of him choking me. Never go to this restaurant it is absolutely corrupt and terrible.

First off, they only accept cash here probably because it won’t be taxed that way. Everything is overpriced for terrible quality of food. A small dish of boiled lettuce was over $10. While every other dish was lacking in flavour, to the point that we had to get 4 mini bowls of soy sauce and 2 chilli oil sauce. Our 9 year old usually likes things that has simple flavours and loves porridge, but she wouldn’t touch this after trying a spoonful. The service was passable and all the dishes arrived in less than 10mins even though the place was pretty packed and food was not steaming hot, just warm. Which is a tad concerning considering the fact that I frequent Chinese restaurants and the authentic places will take a bit to cook the food. The only dish I liked there was the curry brisket, but that’s probably because that’s perfect and easy for leaving there to stew. Best thing about this place is that it’s open 24/7. Perfect for a late night snack, but the price is outrageous for that quality. I would gladly pay it if it was actually good food.

Food was superb. Unfortunately two things stand out from my visit to No. 9 Restaurant: After we paid (cash only) our waitress gave back our change (standard), as my friend was collecting the coins, another lady (I'm assuming somewhat management) came by and rudely took the coins out of my friends hand and demanded a tip. We assumed she thought we didn't pay yet and explained we already paid and left a tip (Meal was roughly $25 and we left a toonie), she rudely demanded more. Conflict-avoidant, we left the extra change. The second issue was that about 20-30 minutes after our meal, both my friend and I experienced an incredibly elevated heart rate (my resting is about 60-70 maybe 80). We were both standing still with not much external stimuli and this was not expected behavior, do note that this was both of our first meals of the day. We both experienced heart rates of about 130bpm-145bpm. It's disheartening to experience these things at a restaurant previously so beloved by us.

It's been about 20 years since I had been here last. I used to frequent this place when I used to work the graveyard shift for one of the hotel chains close by. I absolutely love their food. Always hot and fresh. Today I came here for their wonton soup with noodles and added guy Lan with it. The wontons are huge stuffed with beautifully flavoured shrimp. The noodles are excellent with perfect al dente chew. The broth so tasty and full of flavour. Everything about this was 100% on point. What made it even better was the Chilli oil. Omg it was heavenly. Try it!! Spicy delicious flavors. Their friendly staff were attentive and always pleasant. Kept our cups of tea filled all the time. Btw we came here at 130pm on a Saturday. Perfect time to come by. Not too busy at all and our food came quickly. Thank you No. 9. I'll be back soon.
