TOKU (Richmond) 8/10 Overall 7.5/10 Food Quality 8.4/10 Service 8.7/10 Dining Atmosphere 8.7/10 Value ATTENTION PARENTS!!! Ok so I’m excited to tell you about this one! The food quality is ok, some things are greater than others, and some of them are sub-par. But the most exciting part about this place is that it has a kids play area! So you can send them off and eat in peace lol. Also they have a kids menu that is not too shabby =). Their lunch specials are pretty decent as well! Would I come back? DEFINITELY! SCALLOP MAGMA ROLL SET $15.95 Spicy tuna mixed with tempura bits topped with chopped scallop and black sesame sauce. This was pretty good. I would get this again! Comes with a miso soup AND your choice of a side dish. We chose a 2pc flamed salmon sushi. It was pretty good! 8.4/10 GINDARA SABLEFISH SET $19.95 Grilled miso-marinated black cod with rice, soup, and salad. Ok so at this price, for the amount of fish we got was a damn good deal! At western places, expect the same amount of fish to be in the $40 range!!! But I will say they could improve on their miso marinade. It’s like they literally just slapped on miso paste. They need to mix it with a teriyaki sauce or something as well. Oh and the salad sauce was sub-par. So to conclude, the sablefish was great, really good value, and very delicious. But the sauce for it and the salad dressing needs improvement. 8.2/10 CHICKEN TERIYAKI BENTO SET $15.95 Chicken Teriyaki on rice, tempura, salad, 3pc California roll, 2pc Salmon Oishi, mocha dessert, veggies. Ok so the chicken teriyaki was good, standard. The tempura and the California rolls were also standard. The Salmon Oishi sushi was sub-par. Salad dressing was also sub-par. Next time if I was craving chicken teriyaki I would go for just a chicken teriyaki bowl instead of this set. 7/10 KIDS SHINKANSEN SET $12 Veggies and fruit, California roll, chicken karaage, juice box, jello stick. California rolls were standard, karaage was decent. 7/10 KIDS YAKISOBA SET $11 Probably one of the worst yakisoba’s I’ve had. It lacked taste/sauce. But the kids liked it lol. We asked them to serve this in a Shinkansen train dish too! 4/10

Toku Japanese Restaurant is located in Lansdowne Centre, directly across from Earls (on the north side of the mall). It’s a surprisingly large restaurant with high ceilings and call buttons located on the tables (similar to what you’d find at many Korean restaurants). Being the polite and reserved Canadian people that we are, we didn’t even try to use the call buttons during our meal but we didn’t have to as service was pretty good and it was easy to get the attention of the servers. We arrived for lunch during a weekend in late May and found that the place was fairly busy but managed to get a table. Their menu is fairly extensive so it was a bit difficult to decide what we were going to order. We wound up with the Sashimi Set ($18) which included 8 pieces of assorted sashimi, 5 pieces of tempura, miso soup, 3 piece California roll and an appetizer dish. The appetizer dish was the first to arrive at the table and contained a bit of edamame beans as well as seaweed salad. That was promptly followed by the freshly fried tempura which consisted of 2 pieces of prawn tempura, eggplant, zucchini, and potato with a bit of daikon oroshi (grated daikon radish) on the side. The sashimi, consisting of 3 pieces of salmon, 3 pieces of seared tuna, hokkaigai (surf clam), and hamachi (yellowtail) were just okay. I found the salmon to be a bit stringy (which typically means it was not cut properly). We also ordered the Unagi Don ($18.50) with pickled radish and miso soup along with the Oyster Motoyaki ($10) which came served in the shell. The melt-in-your-mouth unagi was one of the highlights of our meal here and we wound up using the rice in this dish with our creamy motoyaki. Overall, we found the freshly fried and hot tempura as well as the unagi and motoyaki to be fairly solid dishes here.

I’m happy to forgive one or two things, but when there are consistent problems with food and service it becomes hard to overlook. First, I ordered an “Apple sake cocktail” which from the menu appeared to be a full glass of what I assumed would be sake, and Apple juice and water or mixer of some kind. Instead I received no more than a thimble of liquid which was a tiny bit of sake mixed with Apple sauce and a bunch of ice. It was the weirdest drink I’ve ever been served. I can’t imagine making it and thinking anyone would want to drink it. Mixing ice with something the consistency of Apple sauce? And in that portion? It looked nothing like the photo in the menu. Anyway, the drink was cheap so it wasn’t worth sending back. Then my partner received his zaru soba set which he liked. My food didn’t arrive until he had already finished eating. I had ordered sukiyaki (which tasted good) and a dragon roll (which was also good). The sukiyaki came without the roll and the roll didn’t come until I was already done with the sukiyaki. So basically my partner just sat there while I ate my food. Then, disappointed, I just wanted to pay and leave. I pressed the “call button” many times and no one came. I don’t know if those buttons even work because honestly, no one responded at all. Finally, we had to just get up and go to the front to pay. I’m happy to pay for quality food and service, but this place is a complete rip off for what they are offering.

I am usually the type to not drop reviews but my experience with this restaurant has been tainted by this one experience I have with them and therefore, will not be heading back again. In previous visits I have made has been at the standards that service and food standards. However, this experience has changed my opinion. I hope that the details that I am going to state will indicate the reasons why I am leaving this here and explaining the terrible experience I have.

Attitude and Customer Service.

I am giving this a pretty low rating because of how the staff handled the situation. To give context, I had ordered my food and my friend ordered too yet my friend changed my mind on something and chose to order something else. Turns out my order got cancelled too as a result and subsequently I only got one thing I wanted out of all I wanted to get. I told them and they did apologize and re-added my order on there, however the food wasn't to standards (I'll explain later).

Food

Food standards are mediocre at best. When that re-ordered was added on, the food was mostly ok but then the California roll that I had as part of the order was just like eating sushi left outside for way too long and was starting to have this mild musty taste to it. Worse sushi food taste ever yet and I am extremely not impressed. Food should not be served at this poor quality.

Billing

About halfway in, the restaurant was about to close when they told us to bill us first because of them closing. I found that odd but then we ran into the missing order situation from my previous statement. I found that strange and almost inconsideration of the customer as we were trying to finish eating despite them saying we can stay however long we liked. It would be much better if they waited for us to finish before billing us.

Today I have found a restaurant what is not qualify for the food business. I have ordered Nabeyaki Udon ($16) Abut I Chirash Don($34) what is looks good on the Menu. When Nabeyaki udon is arrived Myself and friend Was wondering about what they called Nabeyaki udon is just noodle in the clear salty water. And they keep insist that is Nabeyaki udon and they have serving this for 5 to 6 years. I was really shocked about their attitude and why no one has complain about their food so far. Either they are so lucky so far or people whi eat their restaurant doesn’t know the taste of Nabeyaki udon. I really want to see the Chef and want to ask him they really think this is Nabeyaki Udon. Managers attitude is also amazing. She is keep talking about we will pay the money or not. That lady is really craving of money. If she want charge the money then she has to prepare proper food and service. Very Rude. Also Aburi Chirash Don is looks terrible . It is not even close to the presentation in the Menu. We lost appetite and drop the chopsticks right a way. I am very angry with their attitude and their food quality. Nothing is working properly in this Tocu restaurant in the Landsdown Mall in Richmond. I recommend this restaurant whoever want to experience the bad quality food(they don’t have any idea what is Japanese food) and rude attitude and just talking about payment only restaurant. Totally wrong place… As soon as we refuse to pay the wrong food and she take away dishes and almost shouting on us to go. We don’t have enough time to take a picture of there dishes. Sorry for not sharing their great quality food. We surprised the manager’s attitude. She keep saying that if you don’t want to pay the food, we will call the police. I have no idea why ? When we complain the food quality , she just treat us like the customer who want to eat the meal for free. Anyway, very bad experience from there. We will never go...
