Could give negative points if possible. I witnessed Racial Discrimination by the restaurant staff. It was unfortunate for me to visit Ship & Plough in Gimli. I say that because I became a witness of hate crime against the South Asian Community from the restaurant staff. In this incident, target to racial discrimination was a sikh family, a couple with their two little girls.
I visited the restaurant at 11.30 pm on May 22,2022. At this time every food place in Gimli is closed. The only two options available are Ship and Plough restaurant and the gas station just outside the town. Having such limited options, the family came hoping to eat dinner at the restaurant.(The kitchen was not closed, they offer food well until 2 am) They were debarred from sitting in the restaurant since kids were not allowed after 10 pm as the place also has a bar, which is fair. However, the lady working at the restaurant refused to provide food for the family as ‘Takeout was not allowed’. (Upon checking Google, it mentions that restaurant is open only for dine in and take out) She told them to get the kids out and try the gas station or anywhere else in town. I am sure they tried the entire town as only the gentleman came back at around 12 am. He sat on the seat to dine in but was again refused and pointed finger at so disrespectfully as he was told to leave. The gentleman could not say a word and left that very instant. He did not argue, did not yell or be impolite towards the server. All this time I thought that she might not have boxes or disposable cutlery to offer take out.
My friend rushed out to offer him something for his kids from the restaurant. But of course as any human, he was extremely demoralized by the shear heartless behaviour of the server.
I was so disappointed to see this episode and had to leave immediately. Our food was here and since I had to pay for the food I asked for boxes. AND SHE HAD THEM! I felt sick to my stomach. All this time I thought she just didn’t have take out boxes to offer.
Food is human right and should never be refused to anyone irrespective of their religious beliefs, gender, colour or ethnicity. Also, having policies in place that may result in systematic discrimination can also be a case in human rights commission. Refusing food at restaurants to anyone based on their race is a crime. (The Manitoba Human Rights Commission: Hospitality Industry Services - Denial of Service).
The food was good however service of this kind will never bring me back to this restaurant ever again. I had my first date here with the love of my life, now it has been completely...
Read moreAbsolutely horrible experience. It was during the Victoria long weekend, a group of 8 of us chose this restaurant because it has a nice vibe from the looks of it and also got pretty good reviews on Google. But everything went downhill from there. When we first walked it and asked for a table, we immediately got informed we cannot separate the bill for a group this big, inconvenient but reasonable since there were only 2 waitresses working that day. We sat down and ordered shortly after. Into 35-40 mins of waiting, our starved stomach obligated us to double check with the waitress what’s going on in the kitchen. We then got the response of that they’re sorry because they have a tiny kitchen and only 1 kitchen staff is cooking. Reminding you this was not brought up during the previous 35 mins we’ve waited, and it certainly was NOT mentioned when we sat for table unlike the ‘no split bill’ they made clear of. Another half an hour went by our food finally got served. Decent food tho pricey but no complaints on the taste wise fortunately. But when it came to the time of paying the bill, the waitress automatically inputted the price including 18% gratitude which is around 30 something bucks for the tips. We were absolutely not intended to tip that much with the service we’ve gotten. It was very likely done deliberately by the waitress because first time my card failed to go through. So she had to re-input the amount with that gratitude for me to do it the second time. Were pretty furious when noticing this during calculation for the split later on. WOULD...
Read moreThe service left much to be desired, but the food and atmosphere are always on point.
Recently my partner and I stopped in for drinks and a meal, we were asked what we wanted to drink very rudely before we had even sat down (no menus offered) my partner ordered a whiskey sour, and I ordered a water because I was so thrown off that I hadn't even sat at the table yet and assumed the waitress would return, she did not. She didn't return to offer a refill on our drinks, didn't check in on if we wanted anything else, and no menus were ever offered. The waitress walked past us multiple times, seemingly ignoring my attempts to wave her down for food me us. After sitting at our table for over 45 minutes, with no service, we had to chase the waitress down to pay for our 1 drink, and decided to leave and go to another establishment open late in town for food and drinks.
This is super disappointing as my partner and I love stopping in for a late-night drink and poutine, and have enjoyed doing so for years now, but with the recent decline in service I am not sure this will continue to be our "go to"...
