Hot Wok Asian Restaurant — Restaurant in Saskatoon

The WORST Chinese food we have tasted in a very long time. We were visiting Saskatoon yesterday and thought we would treat ourselves to our favourite lunch of Chinese food since it's been 5 months since we've indulged. We each ordered the Dinner for One and it was AWFUL. The deep fried Pork was over-battered and the size of the Pork were the size of a Mint candy - very tiny pieces and only about 8 tiny pieces. All we could taste was batter, so not even sure if it was Pork or just batter. The Shrimp were over battered and tasted like it had been re-fried in old oil. There was so much batter on the shrimp that we had to pull out the shrimp and leave the over-crisp, horrible tasting batter on the plate. The Chow Mein consisted of over-cooked Udon noodles stirred fried in soy sauce or something..... and tasted like they had been sitting for a week. There were NO bean sprouts or even cabbage in the Chow Mein - just old stale Udon noodles. The Chicken Fried Rice had about 6 to 8 pieces of frozen type of mixed peas and carrots in it - tasted like they had been sitting for a week as well - the meat, we assume it was Chicken, was old tasting as well. The Rice was stale tasting and was really clumped into a mush. We took a few bites and couldn't finish it, it was so terrible. I ordered Chinese Tea and it was barely warm and didn't have a good taste to it, so we left it behind as well. So much for a nice lunch - it really put a damper on our day - we should have dropped into the DQ right beside the restaurant - we would have gotten a much better lunch. I wouldn't even give this restaurant a Star if I was able to. The food is not even worth One Star!! What a complete waste of...

While the food is good (4'ish stars), customer service is terrible (1 star). We ordered from here twice within a week. The first time they messed up on a dish and gave us something we didn't order, but whatever, it wasn't a huge deal . We then ordered about 8 different dishes (some had multiples so not having to make 12 different dishes) which cost about $150 and I called over 45 minutes before we were wanting to pick it up. They didn't say time-wise it would be a problem, so when we got there for the 6:00 pick up we had to wait an extra half hour. They didn't start it until we got there and then we were told it was taking so long because it was a big order. When we told them this was why we called them almost an hour before we wanted to grab it there was never an apology, just excuses and basically turning it on us that we had a big order. When we finally got it we asked if they had made sure to double-check the order and she said yes. When we got home and opened the order they had in fact missed a dish so we had to go back to get it. Again, there was no apology for this, just a "that's your bag". A family member lives close to this restaurant so they order from here alot, as well as whenever their family comes into town there is a big group brought in. I can guarantee that it will be awhile before any of us go back, which is sad because all it would have taken was some acknowledgement on the girl's part that they messed up and an apology would have...

We usually order their daily specials, but I was craving as well for Steamed Pork Buns, so I ordered that too! The daily special was very good as the Sweet & Sour Pork came as crispy, yet tender meat, so it was really good!! Other days, the pork is hard & rubbery. The Steamed Pork Buns was awful !! Seems like it wasnt steamed at all, but warmed in the microwave, thats why the other part was "tough"!! This is the only Vietnamese restaurant close to us. We tried the other 2 ones closer to our place, but the food at the other one, I will never go back there! The other one was mediocre...so-so... There is another Vietnamese restaurant, but we have to drive 3-5 minutes farther, & not much variety there. UPDATE. Sept 2025. We went here for early supper. I ordered Beef Noodle Soup. (It was ok. I wished there were more Beef pieces in it. Its nice they agreed to add bit more flat noodles in it). My husband ordered his favorite Ginger Beef. (This came delayed. The table next to us came after we arrived, but they got their order first. Anyway, the long wait was worth it becoz the Ginger Beef was very-very good, paired with their awesome plain rice!!) The thing about this restaurant is, food is not consistent. Sometimes its really very good, sometimes its so-so!
