The shop is modern and minimal. It’s tastefully and aesthetically pleasing and presents very much like a 3rd wave coffee shop. Food and baked goods are top notch. Everything from croissants to little egg sandwiches, biscuits, pancakes and a couple healthy options like yogurt parfait and overnight oats. The coffee however is very disappointing. I’ve come two days in a row and both days the coffee hasn’t been dialed in at all. The frothing of the milk is Starbucks style where they stick the wand in the milk, set it down on and let it do all the work so the foam is not micro foam but cappuccino foam. The sound it makes is atrocious. The coffee needs sugar in order for me to drink since it’s so bitter. They use Pilot coffee from Toronto and usually pilot offers training to ensure they’re brewing the coffee properly so I’m guessing that didn’t happen. Staff is friendly but nothing to write home about. I also didn’t realize you could have dogs in good establishments in Alberta. Hmph.

I often came here when this location was Starbucks—it was a warm, welcoming spot right in the heart of Broadway. When it closed during Covid and became Junior CafĆ©, I was hopeful the spirit of the place would continue. Unfortunately, my visits here haven’t felt the same. The coffee portions are shallow (mostly froth, very little coffee), and the experience feels disconnected. The staff come across distant, sometimes even a bit arrogant, which takes away from the cafĆ© atmosphere. It’s not about the price—it’s about the lack of warmth. At Starbucks, even though it’s a big chain, the baristas make you feel welcome and human. That’s what I miss here. Junior CafĆ© has a beautiful location and nice interiors, but for me, it lacks that genuine connection that makes a coffee shop worth returning to.

Grabbed some breakfast sandwiches and treats for a quick road trip today. The sandwiches were really good, with the potato bun like those available at Ace Burger. Sausage patty was tender and not overdone. The onion jam was delicious. Overall, quite balanced. One of the best in the city. The chocolate chip cookie was decent but not the best. Also got a mocha for the road. That was the low point. Usually chocolate syrup is mixed with the espresso so it disperses when the steamed milk is poured in, but the one I got was not that good. Tasted like steamed milk with a hint of raw/demarara sugar for some reason. No chocolate flavours until the end, with a brief kiss. I'd come back again, though I hope that all the kinks are worked out by that point. Update: the mocha is still a low point.

Hits and miss for Junior Cafe. I like their location, accessible and close to downtown and university. If you want to work or study here, wouldn’t advise you to stay unless you have a power bank. They have 1 outlet which is hidden. Not sure if they intentionally designed it that way… Overall design and aesthetic is 4/5 because I like minimalist and clean designs but hoping for access (e.g power outlets).

Anyway, I’ve been to the cafe a couple of times - they made me matcha one time that was sooo good and then the next time I visited, I ordered a london fog, it didn’t look like one but it did taste like one. I thought it would be steeped tea over ice but it was done quickly so definitely not getting london fog from them. Also, limited syrups, I would expect at least sugar free vanilla so for diabetics who don’t use splenda or stevia, and prefer sugar free, you would be better off at Starbucks or at Sparrow! Food and pastries were also hit and miss. I tried their egg sandwich and it is a must. They do offer GF options but really limited. There were vegetarian options but not explicitly stated on the menu. The staff were nice and lively bunch that’s why there’s 2 stars at least. If they had more syrups, and gf options definitely raised my overall rating to...

Got an americano from here yesteday. The staff told me be careful we are still trying to find lids that fit properly. I assumed that information meant the lid might leak a bit or something, not that the lid didn’t attach to the actual cup at all. I got into my car and tried to move the drink and it began spilling all over me piping hot coffee. It was filled to the brim and I didn’t realize the lids completely didn’t work, that part wasn’t conveyed. I ended up dropping the entire americano down my leg and all over my vehicle burning myself. I immediately went to go back into the cafe to request a new drink in a different cup yet they had locked the door to close in the one minute I was outside. Wasted $3.50 on a coffee I didn’t get to drink and that burnt me and caused a huge mess. If your lids literally don’t work maybe don’t serve customers hot liquids in...
