Yard & Flagon — Restaurant in Saskatoon

Well I wasn’t going to post this because I do support local businesses in the city . But over the weekend gave me time to think about it. On Friday I went on a date, it was the first with this young lady so I gave her the choice of where . She chose the Yand & Flagon on Broadway , nice pub and I have been there before . We arrived at 4, the server was quick, dropped off two menus. I ordered a Guinness and my date ordered a coffee.  I let the server know we weren’t here to eat just for drinks and chat. Over sometime a male server came and I ordered another Guinness and my date did another coffee . Just before 7 the male server came by, asked if I wanted another Guinness . I still have half a glass left so I told him not right yet. He then put my bill on the table and said do you want to pay your bill it’s been almost 3 hours , he had the debit machine in his hand ready. Now even if the pub was full and if there was a line up , which there was neither . There was no cause to rush us out of the bar . I paid the $26 bill and left a $10 cash tip. But no way would I ever return to a pub where the servers are trained to over serve , or to force a patriot out.  Some of you may not agree, but this is a complete reflection on how the Yard and Flagon operates.  Now you all can tell me how it’s an amazing pub with fantastic food , it won’t change my opinion . Came here with some friends because I really was curious about the menu. The atmosphere is like an Irish pub vibe, older pub but decorated in that consistent manner. Booths, bar stools & seats and tables. Table service available you just pick your seat and the server will come. There’s also a patio but it wasn’t open when we went. The menu is AWESOME. It’s got some hipster vibes- unique salads and ideas and all sorts of fun menu items as well as traditional bar food. It’s also got some vegetarian options which is great to see. The service was also phenomenal. Lots of laughs, jovial conversation to be had. A long list of drink options to suit your fancy. I had the most amazing salad. I ordered a second chicken breast and it was perfect. The right amount of seasoning and super moist and flavourful. Perfect chicken breast. We also shared a calamari which was very good as well. My only gripe was how loud it was. If it wasn’t people shouting at one another to hear each other, it was the music turned up to have a consistent high level of background noise. We wanted to be able to chat and had some difficulty with it.

Food is good, but I had a weird interaction, sitting at the bar, where I had to take an short but urgent phone call, and the bartender interrupted me to ask me if I wanted another drink. When I said no, he pulled out the machine for me to pay, even though I hadn’t finished my drink yet, or my quick phone call! As soon as I hung up, he asked for me to pay right away, when I hadn’t finished enjoying my drink. They were not short on seats, either, but I felt like he was kinda pushing me out of the building. He also made me feel really uncomfortable asking about why I was on a phone call. I can understand if he didn’t like people taking calls at the bar. But after explaining, in detail, that my friend was in a quite a bit of a pickle and really needed a quick bit of help, he made a weirdly condescending comment towards me.
