My fiance and I went here due to the "good" reviews- needless to say we were gypped.
We both ordered a plate of food and bubble tea...after service was given to "Asians" that had come in 15 minutes after we had already been there and had been waiting to order. We then get our bubble tea about ten minutes later, each five minutes apart and wait on our food. My fiance's plate came out and he waited to eat until mine came. However, my plate was left in the kitchen for a good twenty minutes longer than his. By the time my food made it out, his had gone way past being considered cold so he asked him to eat it up real quick in the frying pan for a minute or two. The waitress took it and we waited for another fifteen minutes to get his plate back...only for it to be inedible due to it being reheated in the microwave plus forgotten until he asked if they were going to give it to him. By then my food was cooled off as well, I ate as much of it as I could but honestly I just lost my appetite half way through. I had ordered fried rice only to receive sticky rice with oil and under-cooked vegetables.
In the end we had to deal with the waitress saying that's how "real Asians" cook fried rice and the noodle plates we ordered. We've had the same dishes plenty of times in numerous spots around the world, we know what the food is supposed to be like. She contacted her manager and we had to work it out with him as the waitress kept referring to the "difference" between us in racist slang, "You French, Greek, etc." "Us Chinese, we Asians, etc." The only person who was "nice" was the manager.* The bubble tea was medicore at best, mine had a horrible after taste. If you're not Asian or hate horrendously loud music and shouting- just skip this place and try somewhere across the street. There's plenty of nicer places to pick...
Read moreIt used to be a popular hangout spot for me and my friends when I was in high school over 10 years ago. Now it seems like their service had gone to the toilet. I'm used to the typical Chinese restaurants where you don't get great customer service and I'm ok with that. But the service at this location is just atrocious. The waitresses always have this annoyed look. They don't acknowledge you. They don't address you. Most of the time, they look right through you. It makes dining in such an unpleasant experience, like you are in their way.
I have had several very negative experiences in the past few months. One time we went in the morning. The door was open, so we went in. Nobody attended to us, so I went to the counter to speak to this girl who was doing something on a machine. She barely looked at me and mumbled that they were not open. So we went back outside. I then looked at the time. It was 10:58am and they open at 11am. That was ridiculous. I went back in again and walked right up to the counter. The same girl carried on whatever she was doing, and pretended I wasn't even there. By that point, it was 10:59am. I pointed out to her that there's literally 1 minute till their opening time. Are they seriously sending us outside? She just had this zoned out look on her face and told us to sit wherever. She then came over to take the order and the gloves she was wearing stunk.
Another time, we ordered salt and pepper chicken. The plate of chicken came with multiple strands of hair in it. It was very visible,...
Read moreSome things are kinda hit or miss. Beef Noodle has sadly gone downhill from what it was 10 years ago. The broth used to be rich with a miso-like texture. You used to be able to ask for chili powder for free and it really packed a punch. Later on they changed the recipe so the soup is mostly soy sauce. Don't get "spicy beef noodle" - they used to put spicy pot sauce (seems to be my favourite, Ning Chi) in the soup but now it's identical to regular beef noodle with a few fresh chili peppers on top, not worth the extra 1$ or so! You're better off asking for Sriracha sauce (I don't recommend their chili oil which is pretty tasteless and not spicy), or even better ordering spicy wontons on the side (which usually has Ning Chi but occasionally some sweet garlic sauce) and adding the sauce to the soup.
The regular noodle soup that comes with combos is decent but often I find it lacking in flavour.
Their fried food tastes great but is heavy on grease or lard, especially the fried rice. The fried fish fillet is excellent. I recommend asking for some sriracha to mix with the tartar sauce they give you.
Most of the drinks are great although they have a tendency to oversweeten them. They have the hyped brown sugar pearl latte only served at 8PM, but it's rather mediocre considering there have been a few positive reviews from the Richmond store (and other locations serve it at 3PM as well). There was no "streaking" of the syrup on the side that...
