Ok so I am very picky when it comes to food. Which is kinda funny to say considering if you ask my family they'd probably say "how? If he barely even tastes his food because he's just shoving it all down." Haha but seriously I love sushi mori. I will say its not my absolute favorite only because in my opinion there is one other place that is just so hard to beat in terms of sushi. But sushi mori isn't that far behind. I know they have different locations so I'm reviewing the location in whiterock.
I like how there is a good selection of different things to eat there so you can have different rolls or dishes to try. Now I don't change my selection too much whenever I go to any sushi restaurant. I usually try two things to get a feel for one which is the cali roll and salmon sashimi. If a place ever gets this wrong it usually gets worse from there( not always but most of the time if you mess these 2 things up most of the time they rest of the food isn't up to par.) I love the cali roll and salmon sashimi. Some places just mess up the rice or sometimes the crab is well I know its imitation crab alot of times but even like that some places its just dry even with the mayo. But not here. And I like how its always consistent. No matter what day or time I go the food always has the same quality. No when I first went there I first ordered that and they passed. So then I moved on over and tried different things. One dish I don't know how many people try is the Katsu don, I love love love this dish. It comes with pork or chicken and egg, onions and rice. But it's the sauce that I love its not a chicken teriyaki sauce I don't know what it is really and I'm sorry I can't really describe it. I recommend it if you don't mind the meat and egg. Although if you don't like alot of sauce I'd ask if they can go easy on the sauce or just not get it as they do layer it well onto its more on the heavier side. So keep that in mind( heavier meaning they do put quite a bit) but I recommend it for anyone else that doesn't mind. A roll that i don't ever see anywhere else is called a crazy boy roll. Its like a cali roll but instead of rice its wrapped with a fried veg(I think its a veggie) and it has spicy mayo. But it definitely puts an amazing twist to your regular cali roll. It's amazing. Other members of my family have ordered the chicken udon. I can also recommend that and for most this alone will fill you unless your like me and when you find a place you like you wanna eat everything. Chicken udon comes with a generous amount of chicken and noodles some egg. I would say it kind of tastes like a miss soup just a little lighter on the salt. Especially during the winter it is very welcome and like I said for most, this dish alone will fill you up. The assorted sashimi is also great. With a variety of sushi pieces. It comes in I think two different sizes(can't remember exactly but what i mean by sizes is just how much pieces it has one i remember is 14 pieces.) But the pieces are a good size not too thin but not very thick either. And not super small or large just a good balance.
You can eat-in or takeout. The place has more then enough space to implement the recommended distancing measures. The staff is always friendly and the place is usually kept clean. Meals do not take long to arrive. They have a website which is nice and has their menu(not everyone does.) I do believe it is on the pricier side but it is worth it. Everything that I have gotten has been good and consistent. Will add photos when I go back...
Read moreWould give 0 stars if I could. The food is bad, the service is slow, the staff are rude. Please spend your time and money somewhere else. We added an extra $3 for the beef in udon, but it was dry and hard with no "beef taste" at all. The udon is too sloppy and the California roll was just a bunch of rich and imitation crab smothered in sauce. To top that off we had to wait 30+ minutes for this simple order. After we paid our tips, we moved and collected our baggage at the end, and was waiting for our car that would arrive in 2 minutes. They were very abrupt and pushy with us, demanding that we leave the vicinity as we are "disrupting their customers". We were standing at a corner and clearly there was no one around.
In response to the restaurants reply Our group arrived with our baggage - if it had been a concern with the restaurant, they could have refused our service. Instead they offered to moved it to a corner of the restaurant which we were ok with the arrangement.
At no point in time we're our baggage blocking the way. After we finished the meal, we stayed at the corner where the luggage was previously stored during our meal time (which was 1hr+ due to the slow service). And they claimed that we were blocking an empty table very abruptly.
Due to this we moved forward to the waiting area of the restaurant - there were no tables around with plenty of room for the passageway. Still apparently customers are a nuisance to them after you've paid and tipped so they said we are blocking them again.
I have to emphasize that all of this happened over the course of 2 minutes. We would have been ok with moving ; but they were rude and uncivil about it. This encounter coupled with the poor food experience just don't justify us recommending this place to anyone. Please please just spend your hard earned time and money somewhere else - we promise you this place is...
Read moreI usually like this place because of the decor and the consistency of the food, but I had a pretty poor experience. The quality of the food was not as good as usual and the service was also very slow. Our waiter who was supposed to serve us had an attitude like he didn’t care at all, but the waitresses were all very lovely and nice. They made the experience worthwhile.
Spicy seafood nabe (1/5) I was shocked when I tried their seafood spicy nabe. I would avoid at all cost if you’re expecting traditional Japanese hotpot. The description on the menu was very misleading and instead of a soup with vegetables and seafood, I was given a kimchi-like jjampong (a Korean spicy soup flavoured with gochugaru). I expected the traditional nabe that is usually soy based and flavoured with shichimi, Japanese spicy powder. There were almost no vegetables, just very few pieces of cabbage (almost looked like just pieces of kimchi) and radish. This was not authentic at all and the seafood tasted old and fishy. I suggest that the name of this dish be changed to better reflect what is served. I talked to the server about this, but it seemed like there was nothing they were willing to do since the manager was away.
Chicken Yakisoba (3/5): Didn’t taste very fresh, pretty mediocre.
Volcano roll (5/5): tasted great, very creative and unique. Their sushi is solid as always.
Service (1/5): asked for Aburi salmon sushi, but was given aburi salmon sashimi. Barely waited on us and waited so long that we had to stand to get the waiters attention for the bill. Also constantly had to get the other waitresses to help us and serve us, since the male waiter was never around to assist us.
Overall I think the sushi here is great, but I would avoid getting their other dishes as their not very authentic...
