This restaurant looked promising. It had a large, mostly shaded patio for a hot and sunny summer day. We were seated quickly by a friendly server and brought water right away. The large colourful "Home of the Tobermory Fish Taco" sign intrigued me immediately, I felt I had to try this signature dish! I figured that if a restaurant would invest money for a sign that big, plus have the service staff wearing t-shirts stating the same, that this thing was gonna be amazing! Unfortunately the opposite was true when it arrived. I'm sorry, but this is not a taco, it's a soggy fish wrap! It also came completely wrapped in paper and was even taped closed! Once I unvieled it, I opened the tortilla to check on the contents. Lots of finley shredded cabbage (probably the best and freshest thing about it), "salsa" that tasted exactly like Heinz chili sauce, yogurt sauce that I couldn't detect (maybe it was in there???) and the fish was a fairly generous portion, but because it was sealed up so tightly the batter was completely soggy! FYI, they use local caught white fish that still has the skin on it. I liked the "local factor" and I know as a professional cook, that when fish skin is crispy it can add to presentation and flavour of a dish. But once again, due to the fact that everything ended up steamed in that paper wrapper, the skin ended up slimy and extremely fishy tasting! I pulled the skin out and set it aside. In this review, I'm telling it like is because I think this restaurant can do sooooo much better! If you're gonna promote a dish this much, I believe that it should live up to the hype! Please improve this "taco"!!!! Season it, give it more sauce, make it some fresh tomato salsa and please don't wrap it up and ruin the "crispy factor"! I know you can do...
Read moreStarted off as a fun atmosphere and turned into probably one of the worst places I've ever gone to eat. My boyfriend and me sat ourselves on the patio according to the sign, and waited 15 minutes before I finally stopped one of the waiters to grab us a menu. The place is always packed and under staffed. 3 groups of at least 5 or more sat after us and got their orders taken well before we even got a server. Finally when we got a server and placed our orders, we had to wait easily 45 minutes before our food came and the people who sat after us had finished their meals and we're waiting on bills. I've worked in the food industry and I know you're supposed to do a quality check within a few mouth fulls of food. I didn't see my server again until he noticed my boyfriend had finished his fish & chips. He asked how our food was and I told him the fish tacos were cold and he replied "bizarre". No sympathy whatsoever. When he came back with our bills I continued to explain that not only was my taco cold but the 3 other groups had been served and paid well before we had. He tried to tell me that my fish taco is supposed to be cold and that they wouldn't do anything for that and said I should have said something sooner, and asked to call over his manager. (Funny how he says it's bizarre my food was cold and then says its supposed to be like that-super contradicting). Honestly at this point I just wanted to go. I was annoyed from spending a chunk of my afternoon there and the service was awful. Will never go there again. Not worth it at all. I've had better fish and chips off of...
Read moreOn the 28th, I dined at the restaurant and ordered a chicken wrap and fish and chips. The food, while not exceptional, was passable. My issue didn't lie with the cuisine but with the appalling behavior of the waiter. After paying $36 and being unable to tip due to a lack of cash as I paid via tap, the waiter, a tall man with a top knot haircut, unleashed a torrent of aggression. He interrogated me about my country of origin, using it as an excuse to berate me for not tipping, even citing his experiences with Asian customers.
His relentless insults were deeply unsettling, reflecting a complete lack of professionalism and courtesy. After moving to Canada, I worked as a waiter for four months, and I never demeaned a customer for their tipping choices. This waiter's behavior went beyond discourteous; it was outright demeaning. To compound matters, the service was abysmal – we had to fetch ketchup from another table ourselves.
This encounter left me profoundly dismayed. I have never experienced such disgraceful conduct in a restaurant before. It's a stark reminder of the importance of respectful customer service. I have decided never to return to that restaurant, and I sincerely hope the owner addresses the issue promptly. No customer should endure such humiliation and disrespect, especially in a setting meant for enjoyment and relaxation. The waiter is a mannerless, rude person and...
