Bennys BBQ is the best BBQ in toronto hands down. It's not local to me, but I make the drive for the sake of good food! That being said, it's in a great location. Parking can be located for free at certain times of day, or paid street parking at other times. (That's yonge street for you). The aroma upon entry is enough to make you want to order everything on the menu.
The meat is all quality soucred, prepared, and cooked. The flavor is ALL THERE when enjoying. Nothing missing. The brisket is my personal favorite as it's just cooked to perfection which is often not found in other places. The ribs are aswell cooked to perfection, which is very hard to come by in other establishments. Turkey, sausage links, pulled pork, or the side ribs are usually a second meat item I will pair with my brisket, just for variety. If you happen to stumble in on a day where they are serving one of their specials of the week, definitely give them a try as they are only around once a week or less even sometimes! For instance, the smoked wings and the pastrami are personal favorites. I still have yet to try the beef ribs!!
When it comes to the sides, I find myself ordering multiple as they are all so delicious I can never make up my mind. The coleslaw is addictive. The potato salad & The Mac n cheese are classic with a twist. The beans and brisket is probably the most interesting side with the most flavor (and bonus meat included inside!). Bennys signature BBQ sauce is also worthy of mention, as it's provided on the table top while eating and I usually add a bunch to my sides and meats because I can't get enough.
Their dessert options are killer aswell... the banana pudding is a personal favorite, or their pies and cookies. Honestly can't choose! Their fridge is stocked with all sorts of variety of sodas, from classic favorites to 'exotic' flavors less likely to find anywhere else.
The men at Benny's are friendly, great and knowledgeable in their craft. Ben himself is a wiz in the kitchen and it's great to see all the creative flavors he has created. The atmosphere in their restaurant is cool. Vintage signs on the wall, good music, and a nice open space perfect for...
Read moreWhat has me salivating every time I think of Benny’s is their St. Louis style side ribs ($12 for ½lb pictured). They are some of the best ribs I’ve ever eaten, the barque wonderfully caramelized containing a hint of sweetness and a bit of spice that lingers. It’s so flavourful that no sauce was required, just bites of the tender pork and its juices was enough for me. They’re so good that a pound to myself is what I’ll need next visit.
Everyone raves about their brisket ($19 for ½lb pictured) and I can see why it’s such a hit. The amount of juice that comes out of each slice is incredible. Maybe it’s the cut we received, but there was a sliver of fat running through the centre that kept it moist to the final bites. I did find the brisket’s rub a tad strong – overly salty and heavy handed on the pepper – but this does help ensure the entire brisket is flavourful. Next time I’ll wipe off some of the rub prior to digging in for the first bite.
The smoked chicken wings ($15 for 1lb) are a Friday special and after two flavourful meats, these still impressed. A fair size, the wings were tender with a light smokiness. These babies were perfect for dunking into Benny’s barbeque sauce, which has a tangy mild sweetness.
Our order arrived with pickled cucumber and onions that were great for cutting through the greasiness of the meat as well as two thin slices of white bread that soaked up the leftover rib and brisket juices. Who would have thought good to the last drop is a slogan that works for barbecue as well?
Despite my fill of meat, the banoffee pudding ($8.50) sounded intriguing – a banana pudding with a toffee glaze. While I found the top portion of the dessert slightly gritty, the bottom was creamy and contained chunks of soft wafer. The bananas could be sliced thinner, or the thicker slices halved, so that there’s a more even distribution of bananas against the custard. Yet, the toffee sauce was fire, thick and...
Read moreWe ordered the Texas trinity for two which included 1/2 lb of brisket, 1/2 lb side ribs, 1 sausage, and the Mac and cheese plus beans, and a banana pudding with two drinks for $80ish total including tip. This was for two people and the portion was honestly so much we had a full meal leftover for a third person. Great bang for your buck.
The food was pretty much flawless. The brisket and ribs were phenomenal and cooked to perfection which paired really well with the BBQ sauce served at the table. Really nothing to say here besides 10/10.
The beans were delicious and served with this crispy onion on top that was a great mouth feel. Would order these again in a heartbeat. Solid 8.5/10
The Mac and cheese was a little disappointing but honestly I think it was due to the comparison against the other dishes. Didn’t have too much of a cheesy flavour and had a bit of a graininess to it, but honestly it was a decent palette cleanser. 6/10.
The sausage was immaculate! We got the jalapeño and cheese sausages which were delicious. Would definitely order these again. 9/10.
The banana pudding was DIVINE! So creamy and caramely with just the right amount of banana and pudding all around. It was our go to between bites to take a break from all the meat and salt and it was just fantastic. Would honestly come back here just for this. 10/10.
Now onto the service: these guys are fantastic. Super nice and kind as well as courteous. They checked up on us quite a few times to make sure the food was delicious (which it waaas!) and were super smiles and positive vibes all around. What really impressed me was when I went to pack my food and a member of staff saw me wrapping it up and dropped off a box without me even asking! Super observant and caring about their customers this restaurant is!
All in all I’d give this place a 10/10 and would highly recommend everyone come here for the best BBQ and...
