California sandwich has been around since 1967 and does not have an equal or competitive threat. The menus is simple. Veal, Chicken, Meatball and now Steak sandwiches. Different locations offer various assortments or sandwich combos. For example, the Dufferin and Castlefield location has a full hot table offering various pastas, vegetables, and other meal options. The Yorkmills location offers sandwiches and penne pasta.

I’ve had everything on the menu and can vouch for quality. It’s a consistently great sandwich across the board. The few times I have been disappointed has been during their slow time. If you’re going to try one of these place go during their peek hours. Lines move very quickly and the sandwiches are always fresh.

As a starter, any veal or chicken sandwich can be served mild, medium or hot. Chose wisely. The hot version is hot. Toppings come at a premium, onions, mushrooms and peppers costing about $2.00 / per topping. The basic sandwich doesn’t really need much. It’s great on its own with some Italian saucing rounding out the flavor. As you can see by the picture, one sandwich will feed a big eater or will comfortably serve two.

There’s a reason why this is Toron’s best and the number one place for locals to grab and old school...

How to quickly lose a customer.

I ordered my two sandwiches over the phone with a young lady and requested a spicy veal sandwich and a mini steak sandwich in medium. When I arrived at this location, there were these two teenagers who are fantastic liars at the front counter. They have no business being there because they are not properly trained on how to speak to grown adults. They are trying to convince me that they don't have a mini steak sandwich. How is it on the menu then? Then this lady in the kitchen window starts shouting that they are out of mini buns and I was forced to take a full sandwich. Furthermore, the lady avoided eye contact with me majority of the time, instead conversing with the teenagers behind the counter, and as I was paying, she casually stated " Well, they can get some pop from the fridge if they want" This was by far the most classless and egregious behaviour I've ever witnessed, and I've always received excellent customer service from this location, so...

My friend and I, thought we'd try the veal sandwich, for dinner tonight. Big mistake! I thought I was getting sauteed onions and mushrooms. I got onions and mushrooms that seemed to be out of a can! Plain and tasteless! They were not fresh mushrooms, I can tell you that much! The large bun was fresh, but the tomato sauce, had no taste whatsoever and was very bland! Although the serving was extremely generous, we were very disappointed, to say the least! We shared some french fries, which appeared quite greasy at first. They were alright tasting, but thought the serving, was way too small for the price of $3.75, plus tax! We hardly ate much of our sandwiches. What a waste of $28.00! We got so turned off off from our meal and lost our appetite, very quickly! We will NOT...

This place is close to where I work and I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about this place so decided to try it. The only halal option they have is the steak burgers. I wasn’t as impressed. It’s just thinly sliced steak with regular tomato pasta sauce with onions on it. Plus the sandwich was extremely moist and sloppy. Almost like a sloppy joe. I could have done without all the moisture running down my fingers on a work day. And they even got my order wrong. I ordered a mini sandwich and they gave me the deluxe (which costs more). Wasn’t particularly thrilled about it. I personally think it should have a a bit more flavour. So it was ‘meh’ for me.
