For delivery:
Their Thai shrimp rolls ($8) are a hefty size, stuffed with shredded vegetables and peppery glass noodles with whole shrimps on the ends. Despite waiting around at the restaurant and a long detour while Ubering, they remained surprisingly crispy and was the promise of good food to come.
For the most part, Thairoomgrande’s fried dishes deliver well. They smartly served the house made Thai sauce on the side so the Grands chicken wings ($11) also remained fairly crunchy. The plump wings were cooked to juicy perfection and well-seasoned so they could be eaten plain or dunked into the thinned sweet and spicy sauce.
Before biting into a dish with three chilies on the menu, make sure there’s a cold drink by your side… the restaurant does not shy away from spice! The chicken devil ($15) incorporated the typical dried red chilis stir-fried with the fowl, but the sweet and savoury sauce also gets a dose chili oil that soaks into the breaded chicken for a devilish bite. In this case, the sauce mixed with the coating isn’t the greatest choice as the breading becomes mushy when being delivered.
Their curry pad Thai ($15 with chicken) isn’t the typical plain noodles tossed with curry powder for colour. Thairoomgrande must use curry paste and powder as the rice noodles are well-coated making for flavourful bites. I wish we had ordered this dish in the same sitting as the vegetable green curry ($15) as the two should pair well together: the noodles were a little dry and needed more salt while the green curry was heavy on coconut milk and light on spice; yet, a drizzle of the green curry on the pad Thai could be a stellar combination.
For a restrained heat, the basil shrimp ($17) is a terrific choice. There’s chili oil used in the savoury sauce, but since the shrimp aren’t coated it isn’t overpowering – if anything the spiciest item in the dish is the broccoli. I’d would like more basil with the shrimp - you really need to look for the herb, there’s not enough of it that it completely permeates the dish.
Oh, but the item that impressed us the most (we ordered it again on another occasion) was the Grand seafood fried rice ($15). I haven’t been able to pinpoint what flavours the rice - my closest guess would be a cross between tom yum and something like shrimp paste. Whatever the ingredients, the rice is spicy with elements of bright herbs and an umami finish. Absolutely delicious. Like most of their dishes, you can choose from a selection of proteins, but we’ve stuck with seafood as the shrimp, calamari rings, and imitation crab sticks goes so well...
Read moreCame for a birthday dinner with 18 people yesterday night. Made reservation early on so the restaurant was aware of this big party of people coming. Food was amazing but the service was HORRIBLE.
Firstly, I told them to bring out a cake at the end and to split the cake and the birthday girl’s bill with the rest of the table. They did not split the bill, in fact they put the cake, appetizers for the table on the birthday girls bill. By the time we got the bill most people have already paid theirs and it was too much hassle to rectify. Not to mention we had to wait close to 45mins to get the bill, with all the back and forth because they got the items mixed up.
Second, I told them to bring out the cake as a surprise. The waitress came right up to the birthday girl and asked “are you ready to cut your cake?” with a straight face. I did not appreciate that at all. What was the point of me telling them to bring out the cake discreetly in the first place?
Thirdly, the waitresses are not familiar with their own menu. They keep telling to “point at the item” on the menu even for orders like martini. And they left out some people’s order which we had to repeat a few times.
Lastly, as I was walking out, the waitress flagged me down and said they left out a beer from the bill and demanded me to pay for it since it was someone from my party (who had left at that point).
What a horrible experience and service. They are lucky the food tastes good. If you go for a party of one or two you’ll be fine but please don’t go with a bigger group unless you want to deal with a very unpleasant service, with 18% gratuity...
Read moreTop menu items: all the curries are fantastic as are all the stir fries, the chicken items as well as the fried rice never fail and the basil noodles are delish. The salads are refreshing too.
2025 Update - I ordered dinner on a weekday once and the veggies were dried up and stale. Had to throw away my entire dish. Also the staff at the reception could be friendlier - some are helpful while others not so much. I called to ensure they followed my dietary restrictions and the staff member told me the kitchen is too busy. Huh? Umm how is that helpful?
Will keep my review unchanged as the delivery staff are always outstandingly polite and friendly so I want to appreciate their service and courtesy (and the food is still amazing on the weekends!)
——— Ordered dinner from here. The food is decent though highly inconsistent. The veggies in the fried rice vary from time to time and the flavours of various dishes do too. Occasionally too salty, spicy and/or oily.
Tons of room for improvement. I tried their basil chicken and it was perfect one time but then dumped with crushed black pepper and swimming in oil the next time. Have had similar experiences with other menu items. Their famous pad thai is seriously lacking too - very dry, no flavour or sauce. Also their portions/serving sizes vary widely from time to time. The service and staff are alright so I’ll give...
